Reproductive efficiency is the main factor limiting yak production on the Tibet Plateau. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementation with calcium chloride (CaCl) and monocalcium phosphate (MCP) for 30 days before breeding on body weight (BW) change, serum bone metabolism biomarkers, conception rate, and calving rate of grazing yaks. Ninety 3 year old yak heifers (153.05 ± 6.56 kg BW) were assigned to three treatments (n = 30 per treatment): grazing without supplementation (CONT), grazing plus calcium chloride supplementation (CaCl), and grazing plus monocalcium phosphate supplementation (MCP). Compared with the CONT group, supplementation with CaCl increased the serum concentrations of osteocalcin and decreased the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels (p < 0.05); supplementation with MCP increased the average daily gain (ADG), serum concentrations of phosphorus (P) and osteocalcin, conception rate, and calving rate (p < 0.05), whereas it decreased the serum concentrations of hydroxyproline, ALP, and calcitonin (p < 0.05). Both CaCl and MCP supplementation had no effect on serum calcium (Ca) concentration. The ADG, conception rate, and calving rate were higher in the MCP group than in the CaCl group (p < 0.05), while the serum concentrations of hydroxyproline and calcitonin were lower (p < 0.05). It could be concluded that premating supplementation with MCP increased the body weight gain and subsequent conception and calving rate of grazing yaks. Supplementation with MCP had a positive effect on body condition and bone metabolism, thus providing a better estrous condition for grazing yak heifers, which could contribute to enhancing reproduction efficiency.

AbstractNeutering is a common veterinary recommendation and is often associated with obesity development. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of two different amounts of protein intake by neutered dogs regarding maintenance energy requirement (MER), body composition, and biochemical and hormonal parameters. A total of fourteen healthy adult dogs were fed either a diet containing 59·7 g protein/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) (P60) or a diet with 94·0 g protein/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) (P94) for 26 weeks after neutering to maintain their body weight prior to neutering. A mixed model was fitted to verify diet, time and diet × time interaction effects on biochemical parameters, serum concentrations of insulin, glucagon, leptin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). MER and the body composition data were evaluated within diets (paired t test) and within times (unpaired t test). A time effect was found for fructosamine, TAG, total lipids and IGF-1 serum concentrations. The diet × time interaction was significant for glucagon (P < 0·05). No differences between diets in the MER within each time were found. However, there was a reduction in the MER of dogs fed the P60 diet 26 weeks after neutering (P = 0·042). The fat body mass of dogs fed the P60 diet increased (P < 0·05) after neutering, even without a body-weight change. Some of the biochemical parameters changed over time, but all remained within the normal range. For the period evaluated in the present study, a diet with 94·0 g of protein/1000 kcal (4184 kJ) metabolisable energy seems to be a beneficial nutritional strategy to maintain the MER and the body composition of dogs after neutering.

AbstractBackgroundThe yak is an important source of livelihood for the people living in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Most genetics detection studies have focused on the comparison between different tissues of different breeds, both living in the Plateau and in the plains. The genetic background and complex regulatory relationship have frequently puzzled researchers. In this study, we divided a population of 10 yaks into two subgroups, namely Plateau (living in the Plateau) and Plain (living in the plains). Phenomic, genomic, and transcriptomic analyses were used to reveal the molecular genetic type in the body weight, slaughter, and beef quality of yaks.ResultsWe found a significant difference (P <0.01) between the third (60 days), fourth (90 days), fifth (120 days), and sixth (150 days) weights of Plateau and plain subpopulations. The difference in body weight was due to differences in kidney weight, meat weight, fur weight, and head weight. However, the beef quality was not significantly different. We identified 540 Differentially Expressed Genes (DEGs). Using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we have constructed a co-express network, and the modules were strongly related to traits. In the genome-wide association studies (GWAS), we detected significant 156, 52, 33, 15, and 3 signals in the meat weight, head weight, fur weight, liver weight, and the last body weight traits. Based on the epigenome-wide association studies (eWAS) results, we created a link relationship between the DEGs expression level and genotype.ConclusionIn summary, our study demonstrated the effectiveness and representative of multidimensional data from a finite number of yak populations. The study highlights the underlying way, as well as a related network, to yield new information on genome genetics and pathogen-host interactions of both the living Plateau and plain yak populations.

<p>The objectives of the study was to identify the existence, productivity, reproductive performances and its relation on the reproductive efficiency, body measurements and weight of female buffalo at Moa island, Maluku Barat Daya<br />regency, Maluku province. There were 96 farmers used as respondents, 222 female buffaloes and secondary data from Agricultural Department in that area that were observed. Survey method and descriptive analysis were applied to<br />collect all of information required. Body measurement was accompleted by direct measurement on the body, consisted of body length, withers height, chest depth, heart girth, rump height, rump width, and ages of buffaloes evaluated. The<br />results showed that reproduction efficiency (RE) was 70.91±10.84%. Body measurements and weight of female buffaloes at 2-3 year old were body length 88.92±9.94 cm; heart girth 136.69±21.05 cm; withers height 94.77±7.23 cm;<br />rump height 44.77±5.54 cm; and body weight 192.46±29.12 kg. At 3-4 years old of female buffaloes, the body length, heart girth, withers height, rump height, chest depth, rump width and body weight were 106,21±4,19 cm; 163.61±16.40<br />cm; 110.03±6.14 cm; 109.08±5.88 cm; 65.58±6.69 cm; 46.82±4.62 cm; and 253.45±30.79 kg, respectively. At 4-5 year old, the body length, heart girth, withers height, rump height, chest depth, rump width, and body weight of females buffaloes were 116.14±10.98 cm; 174.04±12.12 cm; 115.07±3.23 cm; 113.07±3.74 cm; 67.36±7.44 cm; 48.07±3.74 cm; and 270,42±27,24 kg, respectively, while for female buffaloes of more than 5 year old, were 121.44±12.22 cm; 180.01±16.63 cm; 120.19±3.76; 119.49±13.74 cm; 79.40±5.52 cm; 58.72±4.88 cm; and 292.09±29.76 kg. It was concluded that productivity of female buffaloes at Moa island have not optimalet, but it has good performances which can be further developed.</p><p>(Key words: Productivity, Female Buffaloes, Moa Island)<br /><br /></p>

These studies were undertaken primarily to evaluate the importance of fluid intake soon after birth and to determine whether consequences of its omission are modified by the relative excess of water in the body of the newborn infant. Weight losses, outputs of Na, K, Cl, N and water, and serum concentrations were investigated in nine infants receiving no intake for 72 hours after birth and in nine controls receiving approximately 50 cc. water/kg. daily. In seven other infants, 2.5 to 10% glucose was added to the water intake of the first three days. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The amounts of electrolytes and nitrogen excreted in the urine were unaffected by water intake. Thus, infants of 36 weeks or more in gestational age excreted averages of about 0.3 mEq. of Na, 0.45 mEq. of K, 0.35 mEq. of Cl and 80 mg. N/kg. daily during three days after birth, whether or not water was provided. The average weight loss of 13% in three days without water intake as against 8% when water was given indicates the greater loss of body water necessitated if fluid is withheld. 2. Five infants of less than 35 weeks' gestational age excreted amounts of electrolytes 2 to 3 times larger (and somewhat larger amounts of nitrogen) per kg. of body weight than did the more mature infants. Again, the excretions were uninfluenced by water intake. The weight losses of these more premature infants were increased by omission of water intake to about the same degree as in the less premature or full-term ones similarly restricted. 3. In infants of all gestational ages studied, omission of water produced a rather uniform increase in urine concentration; the highest osmolarity of 680 mOsm./l. on the third day was in the urine of a premature infant. Concentrations of Na and Cl in the serum, and of B.U.N. rose in all infants not receiving water, again without regard to maturity. 4. The measurements obtained from infants were compared on the basis of surface area with values which have been established for adults. On this comparison, daily losses of body weight, and thus of body water, were approximately similar for infants and adults during fasting with and without water intake, but outputs of electrolytes by the infants were relatively reduced. 5. The provision of water and glucose to infants, either on the fourth day following birth, or instead of water alone during the first three days, resulted in conservation of body water, but no sodium- or nitrogen-sparing was demonstrated. While possible explanations of these various results are considered above, it seems reasonable to draw a few broad and clinically applicable conclusions here. The composition of the infant at birth affords no protection against the chemical consequences of water deprivation. Age-conditioned limitations in concentration of urine result in inefficient conservation of body water and, therefore, in the occurrence of hemoconcentration before it would take place in the adult. Although thus unable to maintain homeostasis, the clinically satisfactory status of the infants studied and their prompt return to normal serum concentrations after one subsequent day of water and glucose administration suggests their tolerance of three days without water intake. When fluid is given during the immediate postnatal period, the results of this study suggest that body water will be conserved if the fluid be glucose solution rather than plain water.

The aim of this study was to evaluate about reproductive efficiency of beef cattle by artificial insemination (AI) in Kecamatan Tikung Kabupaten Lamongan period 2015 and 2016. To determine reproductive efficiency by artificial insemination, data concerning the value of reproductive efficiency such as number of inseminated cattle, number of pregnancy, and the number of birth were collected. The raw data were processed to get the Service per Conception (S/C), Conception Rate (CR), Calving Rate (CvR). After processed, the obtained data was tabulated. The result showed that Service per Conception on 2015 was 1.28, on 2016 was 1.33. Conception Rate on 2015 was 79.45%, on 2016 was 7.94%. Calving Rate on 2015 was 81.08%, on 2016 was 78.54%. Conclution of reproduction efficiency is good. Based on data calculated of mean and standart deviation.

Women experience physical, mental, and social changes during menopause. It is important to maintain a healthy diet for effective menopause management. The effect of germinated Superjami, a deep violet colored rice cultivar, on the body weight, glucose level, antioxidant defense system, and bone metabolism in a menopausal rat model was investigated. The animals were randomly divided into three groups and fed with a normal diet (ND), a control diet supplemented with 20% (w/w) non-germinated Superjami flour (NGSF), or germinated Superjami flour (GSF) for eight weeks. The NGSF and GSF groups exhibited significantly lower body weight and fat, glucose and insulin contents, adipokine concentrations, and bone resorption biomarker levels, and higher antioxidant enzyme activities and 17-β-estradiol content than the ND group (p < 0.05). The GSF group showed greater glucose homeostasis, antioxidative, and bone metabolism-improving effects compared with the NGSF group. These findings demonstrate that germination could further improve the health-promoting properties of Superjami and that this germinated pigmented rice cultivar could be useful in the treatment and management of menopause-induced hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and bone turnover imbalance.

Previously, we have found that the addition of L-ascorbic acid to chitosan enhanced the reduction in body weight gain in guinea pigs fed a high-fat diet. We hypothesized that the addition of L-ascorbic acid to chitosan would accelerate the reduction of body weight in humans, similar to the animal model. Overweight subjects administered chitosan with or without L-ascorbic acid for 8 weeks, were assigned to three groups: Control group (N = 26, placebo, vehicle only), Chito group (N = 27, 3 g/day chitosan), and Chito-vita group (N = 27, 3 g/day chitosan plus 2 g/day L-ascorbic acid). The body weights and body mass index (BMI) of the Chito and Chito-vita groups decreased significantly (p < 0.05) compared to the Control group. The BMI of the Chito-vita group decreased significantly compared to the Chito group (Chito: -1.0 kg/m2 vs. Chito-vita: -1.6 kg/m2, p < 0.05). The results showed that the chitosan enhanced reduction of body weight and BMI was accentuated by the addition of L-ascorbic acid. The fat mass, percentage body fat, body circumference, and skinfold thickness in the Chito and Chito-vita groups decreased more than the Control group; however, these parameters were not significantly different between the three groups. Chitosan combined with L-ascorbic acid may be useful for controlling body weight.

Introduction: Prevalence of obesity is 30 % in the Czech Republic and is expected to increase further in the future. This disease complicates surgical procedures but also the postoperative period. The aim of our paper is to present the surgical technique called hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy (HALS), used in surgical management of kidney cancer in morbid obese patients with BMI >40 kg/m2. Methods: The basic cohort of seven patients with BMI >40 undergoing HALS nephrectomy was retrospectively evaluated. Demographic data were analyzed (age, gender, body weight, height, BMI and comorbidities). The perioperative course (surgery time, blood loss, ICU time, hospital stay and early complications), tumor characteristics (histology, TNM classification, tumor size, removed kidney size) and postoperative follow-up were evaluated. Results: The patient age was 38−67 years; the cohort included 2 females and 5 males, the body weight was 117−155 kg and the BMI was 40.3−501 kg/m2. Surgery time was 73−98 minutes, blood loss was 20−450 ml, and hospital stay was 5−7 days; incisional hernia occurred in one patient. Kidney cancer was confirmed in all cases, 48–110 mm in diameter, and the largest removed specimen size was 210×140×130 mm. One patient died just 9 months after the surgery because of metastatic disease; the tumor-free period in the other patients currently varies between 1 and 5 years. Conclusion: HALS nephrectomy seems to be a suitable and safe surgical technique in complicated patients like these morbid obese patients. HALS nephrectomy provides acceptable surgical and oncological results.

The article presents the data on the study of the influence of mycotoxins combination (T-2 toxin at the concentration of 0.095 mg/kg and aflatoxin B1 in the concentration of 0.019 mg/kg) on the body of quails and the results of pharmacocorrection of toxicosis with a complex consisting of beet pulp and lecithin. Structural changes in the intestines of quais at fodder mycotoxicosis are described. The use of antitoxic feed additives in poultry led to a weakening of the action of xenobiotics, which was confirmed by an increase in the safety of poultry and increase in body weight of quails, a decrease in the clinical manifestations of intoxication, as well as in positive changes in the structure of the intestine of the poultry during histological examination.

This study was conducted to find out hepatoprotective activity of hesperidin (HES) 100mg/kg body weight (b.w.) against ciprofloxacin (CPX) 100 mg/kg induced hepatotoxicity in local breed rabbits .CPX is a broad spectrum antibiotic used for treatment of many bacterial infections. Twenty four male rabbits were divided into four groups ,group1: control, (1 ml/kg Saline orally) group 2: CPX (100 mg/kg orally) for (14) consecutive days , group 3: HES (100 mg//kg) orally for (14) consecutive days group 4: CPX (100 mg/kg orally) plus HES (100 mg//kg orally ) for (14) consecutive days. All the rabbits were killed on the (15) day of the experiment, and then the blood, and livers samples were taken. CPX induced hepatotoxicity was proved by a significant (p less than 0.01) reduction in the body weight ,and a significant (p less than 0.01) increased serum aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) , Malonaldehyde enzyme (MAD) and histopathological changes. Protective hepatic toxicity effect and oxidative damage caused by CPX significantly (p less than 0.01) increasing in body weight and significantly (p less than 0.01) decreasing AST , ALT, MAD and improving tissue morphology in HES (100 mg//kg) . These results assure that HES (100 mg//kg) antioxidant effects can protect CPX-induced hepatotoxicity in rabbits.
