Goldfish (Carassius aurautus), which is a middle size cyprinid, widely distribute throughout Eurasia. Phylogeographic studies using mtDNA markers have revealed several divergent lineages within goldfish. In this study, mtDNA variations were determined to elucidate the phylogeographical pattern and genetic structure of goldfish in Northeast Asia. A total of 1054 individuals from Amur river basin were analyzed, which including five newly collected populations and four previously reported populations. Three distinct mtDNA lineages were identified in those samples, two of which corresponded to two known lineages C2 and C6, respectively. The third lineage referred to as C7, following six known lineages of goldfish in mainland Eurasia. AMOVA results suggested that most of the genetic variations were among lineages, rather than among populations or twice samplings. We noted that the control region (CR) and cytochrome b (cytb) sequences of lineage C7 have been reported in previous studies, respectively. However, the evolutionary position and distribution pattern of this lineage was not discussed in the context of the species. Our results showed that “odd” CR and “hidden” cytb sequences from Central Asia represent the same mtDNA lineage of goldfish. The known samples of C7 lineage were collected from Central Asia (Eastern Kazakhstan and Western Mongolia) to East Asia (Northeast China and Far East Russia), which suggested that it had a wider distribution, rather than limit in Central Asia.

Calamagrostis are described from the Russian Far East. Chromosome numbers are reported for two new taxa. Calamagrostis burejensis Prob. et Barkalov, 2n = 28 (sect. Calamagrostis), C. zejensis Prob., 2n = 28 (sect. Deyeuxia), and C. × amgunensis Prob. (C. amurensis Prob. × C. neglecta (Ehrh.) G. Gaertn., B. Mey. et Scherb. s. l.) are described from the Amur River basin (Amur Region or Khabarovsk Territory); Arundinella rossica Prob. (sect. Hirtae) and Calamagrostis kozhevnikovii Prob. et Prokopenko (sect. Calamagrostis) from Primorye Territory.

Nemoura sirotskii sp. n. (Plecoptera, Nemouridae) is described as a new stonefly species from the tributary streams of Zeya Reservoir (Amur River Basin) in the south of the Russian Far East. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided for the larvae and adult specimens. The diagnostic characters distinguishing it from sympatric species N. arctica are discussed.

The radiocarbon age of the earliest pottery from Russian Far East—Gromatukha and Osipovka cultures—is between around 13,300 BP and around 10,400 BP. This shows that the Amur River basin was one of the centers of origin of pottery in East Asia, at the end of the Pleistocene. Today, there are three areas within East Asia with pottery-associated 14C dates between around 14,000 BP and 13,000 BP—southern China, the Japanese Isles, and Russian Far East.

Cluster analyses, potential source contribution function (PSCF) and concentration-weight trajectory (CWT) were used to identify the main transport pathways and potential source regions with hourly PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in different seasons from January 2017 to December 2019 at Akedala Station, located in northwest China (Central Asia). The annual mean concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 were 11.63 ± 9.31 and 19.99 ± 14.39 µg/m3, respectively. The air pollution was most polluted in winter, and the dominant part of PM10 (between 54 to 76%) constituted PM2.5 aerosols in Akedala. Particulate pollution in Akedala can be traced back to eastern Kazakhstan, northern Xinjiang, and western Mongolia. The cluster analyses showed that the Akedala atmosphere was mainly affected by air masses transported from the northwest. The PM2.5 and PM10 mainly came with air masses from the central and eastern regions of Kazakhstan, which are characterized by highly industrialized and semi-arid desert areas. In addition, the analyses of the pressure profile of back-trajectories showed that air mass distribution were mainly distributed above 840 hPa. This indicates that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations were strongly affected by high altitude air masses. According to the results of the PSCF and CWT methods, the main potential source areas of PM2.5 were very similar to those of PM10. In winter and autumn, the main potential source areas with high weighted PSCF values were located in the eastern regions of Kazakhstan, northern Xinjiang, and western Mongolia. These areas contributed the highest PM2.5 concentrations from 25 to 40 µg/m3 and PM10 concentrations from 30 to 60 µg/m3 in these seasons. In spring and summer, the potential source areas with the high weighted PSCF values were distributed in eastern Kazakhstan, northern Xinjiang, the border between northeast Kazakhstan, and southern Russia. These areas contributed the highest PM2.5 concentrations from 10 to 20 µg/m3 and PM10 concentrations from 20 to 60 µg/m3 in these seasons.

Two new species of Beckidia Sæther, B. biraensis and B. connexa, from the Amur River Basin are described and figured as males. The male of B. tethys (Townes) is redescribed and figured and the species is recorded for the first time from Russia. The generic diagnosis is emended and a key to the males of Beckidia from the Holarctic Region is given.

AbstractUpward Sun River 1, an individual from a unique burial of the Denali tradition in Alaska (11500 calBP), is considered a type representative of Ancient Beringians who split from other First Americans 22000–18000 calBP in Beringia. Using a new admixture graph model-comparison approach resistant to overfitting, we show that Ancient Beringians do not form the deepest American lineage, but instead harbor ancestry from a lineage more closely related to northern North Americans than to southern North Americans. Ancient Beringians also harbor substantial admixture from a lineage that did not contribute to other Native Americans: Amur River Basin populations represented by a newly reported site in northeastern China. Relying on these results, we propose a new model for the genomic formation of First American ancestors in Asia.One Sentence SummaryAncient Beringians do not form the deepest American lineage, but harbor admixture from Amur River Basin populations.

A long-term study implemented in the Amur River basin enabled us to generate an updated checklist of 606 valid species in Chironomidae (Diptera) which are composed of 129 genera and six subfamilies, with 98 (17%) described new species belonging to 46 genera. Among the 98 recently described species, 46 ones (45%), were considered as possible endemics and sub-endemics. The numbers of species and genera by subfamilies is as follows: Podonominae (3 species; 3 genera), Tanypodinae (17; 9), Diamesinae (25; 11), Prodiamesinae (7; 3), Orthocladiinae (307; 57) and Chironominae (247; 46). The higher numbers of species (421 and 410, respectively) were recorded in the Lower and Middle parts of the Amur River basin, as compared with the Upper part of the basin. Most of the recorded chironomids (387 species, 67%) are Palaearctic in distribution, while others (191, 33%) are widely Holarctic. Species with Palaearctic distribution mostly have the following range types: East Palaearctic continental (23%); East Palaearctic continental-insular (20%); Palaearctic transpalaearctic (14%); Palaearctic amphi-Eurasian (10%).
