Because of the light weight and high strength, composite laminates have many advantages in aircraft structures; however, they are frequently subjected to severe dynamic loadings during flight. To understand the dynamic properties of composite laminated thin plates at the stress scale, this paper studies the stress modal analysis (SMA) of composite laminated thin plates by finite element method (FEM). Firstly, the basic theory on SMA of composite laminates was given from the classical displacement modal analysis. Secondly, a square laminated thin plate was numerically studied to obtain some distribution laws of the stress mode shapes (SMSs) from the layup and stress component perspectives. Then, based on the characteristics of SMSs in different plies, a modified layup configuration was conducted for possible lower magnitude and more uniform distributions of SMSs. Results indicate that ±45° layups can improve the performance of SMSs of the square plate, without excessively decreasing the modal frequencies. Such fact manifests that ±45° layups are critically vital for the dynamic stress reduction of the square composite laminated plates. Modal participation factor and strain energy were evaluated to assist the determination of critical modes. Lastly, the aspect ratio of the composite plate on layup design was considered. Numerical investigation in this study can serve as a preliminary step of SMSs perspective for the analysis and optimization of dynamic composite laminates.

Damage causes changes in structural parameters, which in turn, modify dynamic properties, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Based on this assumption, this paper presents a new approach to detect different damage modes of composite laminates. Finite element modal analysis is performed on the composite laminate to obtain the modal mode shapes used to compute the modal strain energy. Consequently, an improved damage index is defined by using the ratio of modal strain energies of composite laminates before and after damage. The proposed method is validated using a numerical simulation of a composite laminate with damages in some elements, which are simulated by reducing elements’ material stiffness properties under a combined material properties degradation rule. The result shows that six kinds of damage modes of composite laminates can be detected by this method preferably and give a qualitative description for the damage level.

AbstractIn this paper, the dynamic properties of a point-supported cross-laminated timber slab are studied in order to determine the elastic material parameters on this basis. A detailed experimental modal analysis of the slab with dimensions 16.0 m x 11.0 m is performed, and seven modes including the natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shape components at 651 sensor positions are identified. The found mode shapes are complex due to environmental influences that occurred during the two-day measurement campaign. This error is corrected by eliminating these influences. A finite element model of the slab is presented, whose parameters in terms of material properties and boundary conditions are determined by a model updating procedure. Based on the modal properties of the seven experimentally identified modes, an accurate and robust parameter set is obtained, which can be used in further numerical studies of the considered CLT to check serviceability limit criteria.

Abstract In the petroleum, natural gas and petrochemical industries, great attention is being paid to safety, reliability and maintainability of equipment. There are a number of technologies to monitor, control, and maintain gas, oil, water, and sewer pipelines. The paper focuses on operational modal analysis (OMA) application for condition monitoring of operating pipelines. Special focus is on the topicality of OMA for definition of the dynamic features of the pipeline (frequencies and mode shapes) in operation. The research was conducted using two operating laboratory models imitated a part of the operating pipeline. The results of finite-element modeling, identification of pipe natural modes and its modification under the influence of virtual failure are discussed. The work considers the results of experimental research of dynamic behavior of the operating pipe models using one of OMA techniques and comparing dynamic properties with the modeled data. The study results demonstrate sensitivity of modal shape parameters to modification of operating pipeline technical state. Two strategies of pipeline repair – with continuously condition-based monitoring with proposed technology and without such monitoring, was discussed. Markov chain reliability models for each strategy were analyzed and reliability improvement factor for proposed technology of monitoring in compare with traditional one was evaluated. It is resumed about ability of operating pipeline condition monitoring by measuring dynamic deformations of the operating pipe and OMA techniques application for dynamic properties extraction.

Elastomeric bearing is a significant device in structures such as in bridges and buildings. It is used to isolate the ground structure (substructure) and the above ground structure (superstructure) from seismic loads such as earthquake load. Understanding the dynamic behavior of the elastomeric bearing in terms of natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping are increasingly important especially in improving the design and the failure limit of the elastomeric bearing. Modal analysis is one of the methods used to determine the dynamic properties of any materials. Hence, the main objective of this research is to determine the dynamic properties of elastomeric bearing components in terms of natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping via numerical and experimental modal analysis. This method had been successfully performed in investigating the dynamic behavior of rubber and steel shim plate.

Today’s society is sensitive to the architectural heritage conservation. This implies to perform works to maintain these buildings and to assure their structural security. In the last years, the structural analysis of historical masonry constructions has experienced a great progress, thanks to the use of techniques based on the study of the dynamic properties of building structures. In this context, changes on the structural health state of a building are one of the elements that can be assessed considering changes on their dynamic properties. This is useful to evaluate the effectiveness of structural interventions on this kind of buildings by analysing these properties before and after it. This paper focuses on the Jura Chapel, in Jerez de la Frontera (Spain). This chapel is part of San Juan de los Caballeros Church and is dated from the 15th century. In 2015 and after the identification of some structural damages in the chapel vault, an intervention was initiated to improve its structural behaviour and to recover its original appearance. The present work reports the evaluation of the effects that this intervention has on the structural health state of the building, using nondestructive techniques based on ambient vibration tests (AVT) and Operational Modal Analysis (OMA). The AVT were performed for both prerestored and restored states and under environmental loads. A discussion about the validity of doing AVT from extrados when a vault presents disconnection between ribs and web is included in the paper. As a result, the first five natural frequency values have increased while the corresponding mode shapes have not changed significantly. This proves a structural health improvement caused by the repairing process without changing the original behaviour of the structure. This work shows OMA capabilities for evaluating the effectiveness of intervention works on the health state of a historical masonry structure.

An experimental and numerical modal analysis was performed on an 8 m2 T-shaped heliostat structure at different elevation angles. The experimental results were used to validate a finite element (FE) model by comparing natural frequencies and mode shapes. The agreement between experiments and simulations is good in all operating points investigated. In addition, damping coefficients were determined experimentally for each mode, in order to provide all necessary information for the development of a dynamic model. Furthermore, potentially critical operating conditions caused by vortex shedding were identified using a simple approach.

This paper describes the results of a model updating study conducted on a historical aqueduct, called Veziragasi, in Turkey. The output-only modal identification results obtained from ambient vibration measurements of the structure were used to update a finite element model of the structure. For the purposes of developing a solid model of the structure, the dimensions of the structure, defects, and material degradations in the structure were determined in detail by making a measurement survey. For evaluation of the material properties of the structure, nondestructive and destructive testing methods were applied. The modal analysis of the structure was calculated by FEM. Then, a nondestructive dynamic test as well as operational modal analysis was carried out and dynamic properties were extracted. The natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes were determined from both theoretical and experimental modal analyses and compared with each other. A good harmony was attained between mode shapes, but there were some differences between natural frequencies. The sources of the differences were introduced and the FEM model was updated by changing material parameters and boundary conditions. Finally, the real analytical model of the aqueduct was put forward and the results were discussed.

Based on the analysis of the working principle and structure characteristics of helical milling unit, the prototype’s three-dimensional model was built, the prototype’s finite element modal analysis was conducted, and the first 6 natural frequencies and their mode shapes were obtained. The finite element model is experimentally validated by comparing finite element and experimental modal’s parameters. This paper investigates the dynamic properties of prototype, and provides theoretical references for the subsequent dynamic analysis and structural optimization.

This paper is concerned with the finite element technique for predicting the dynamic properties of anisotropic fiber-reinforced composite laminated plates. Considering the effect of transverse shear deformation, a higher order shear deformation theory which satisifes the zero shear stress conditions at the upper and bottom surfaces is assumed. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of a rectangular plate with all free edges are obtained by finite element method and the modal damping values by finite damped element technique. An equivalent stiffness method is introduced to reduce computation time. Four different theoretical predictions of natural frequencies and damped values of a laminated plate are compared with experimental results. Discussions on the effect of transverse shear deformation to the dynamic properties of composite plates are given.

This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study done on an electro-diesel locomotive in order to evaluate the dynamic behavior of the vehicle in terms of safety, running performance and wheel-track interaction. The vibration analysis has been made by means of different experimental methodologies. The first one consists on the acquisition of accelerations at points located at the wheelset, the truck frame and the coach, using piezorresistive accelerometers. The registered signals allow to validate the locomotive in terms of safety against derailment and running behavior, according the UIC 518 leaflet. The second method is based on the modal analysis theory and includes the dynamic properties estimation under vibrational excitation. This procedure takes into account the determination of modal parameters such as natural frequencies, modal damping ratios and mode shapes, by means of a control hydraulic actuator. The third methodology consists on the operational modal analysis done with the experimental measurements acquired on track tests, in order to validate the results obtained by modal analysis and evaluate the dynamic behavior under different speed ranges and cant deficiencies. Several tests have been done by means of the described methods in an electro-diesel locomotive composed by a primary suspension with dampers and a secondary suspension with rigid stiffness. In addition, two types of dampers have been evaluated with the purpose of optimizing the damping properties of the vehicle’s primary suspension. Through these experimental methods, a useful tool for the prediction and analysis of the dynamic behavior is provided. Additionally, the results obtained by means of these methodologies permit examining the influence of different running conditions and vehicle properties on the modal parameters.
