Aircrafts require a large amount of fuel in order to generate enough power to perform a flight. That consumption causes the emission of polluting particles such as carbon dioxide, which is implicated in global warming. This paper proposes an algorithm which can provide the 3D reference trajectory that minimizes the flight costs and the fuel consumption. The proposed algorithm was conceived using the Floyd–Warshall methodology as a reference. Weather was taken into account by using forecasts provided by Weather Canada. The search space was modeled as a directional weighted graph. Fuel burn was computed using the Base of Aircraft DAta (BADA) model developed by Eurocontrol. The trajectories delivered by the developed algorithm were compared to long-haul flight plans computed by a European airliner and to as-flown trajectories obtained from Flightradar24®. The results reveal that up to 2000 kg of fuel can be reduced per flight, and flight time can be also reduced by up to 11 min.

The increasing of flights around the world has led to various problems for the aeronautical industry such as saturated air space and higher levels of fossil fuel consumption. The way in which en-route flights are handled should be improved in order to increase airways’ capacity. A solution is to make aircraft to arrive at specific waypoints at a time constraint called Required Time of Arrival (RTA). Fossil fuel brings as a consequence the release of polluting particles to the atmosphere such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. It is thus desirable to compute the most economical trajectory in terms of fuel burn while fulfilling the RTA constraint. This article proposes a horizontal reference trajectory optimization algorithm based on the Particle Swarm Optimization technique in order to reduce fuel burn while fulfilling the RTA constraint. Results showed that for a flight without RTA constraint, up to 4% of fuel can be saved comparing against the trajectory of reference. The algorithm was normally able to meet the RTA constrain. However, aggressive RTA constraints might reduce the optimization levels of fuel compared with flights without RTA constraint.

The purpose of this work is to develop a trajectory optimization method that generates a fuel optimal trajectory from a predefined 4D waypoint networks, where the arrival time is specified for each waypoint in the network. A single source shortest path algorithm is presented to generate the optimal flight trajectory that minimizes fuel burn. Generating such trajectories enables the airlines to cope with increasing fuel costs and to reduce aviation induced climate change, as emission is directly related to the amount of fuel burn. Two case studies were considered and the simulation results showed that flying a fuel optimal trajectory based on the proposed algorithm leads to a reduction of average fuel consumption on international flights by 2-4% compared with the conventional trip fuel. Keywords: Fuel saving, Cost index, 4D trajectory optimization, Waypoint network, Dijkstra’s algorithm

Predicting the estimated time of arrival (ETA) plays an essential role in decision support (conflict detection, arrival sequencing, or trajectory optimization) for air traffic controllers. In this paper, a new multiple stages strategy for ETA prediction is proposed based on radar trajectories, including arrival pattern identification, arrival pattern classification, and flight time estimation. First, an intention-oriented trajectory clustering method is developed based on a new trajectory representation technique. Such a proposed trajectory clustering method can group trajectories into different arrival patterns in an efficient way. Second, an arrival pattern classification model is constructed based on random forest and XGBoost algorithms. Then, a flight time regression model is trained for each arrival pattern by using the XGBoost algorithm. Information on current states, historical states, and traffic situations is considered to build the feature set during these processes. Finally, the arrival operation toward Guangzhou International Airport is chosen as a case study. The results illustrate that the proposed method and feature engineering approach could improve the performance of ETA prediction. The proposed multiple stages strategy is superior to the single-model-based ETA prediction.

Glioma, as the most common and lethal intracranial tumor, is a serious disease that causes many deaths every year. Good comprehension of the mechanism underlying this disease is very helpful to design effective treatments. However, up to now, the knowledge of this disease is still limited. It is an important step to understand the mechanism underlying this disease by uncovering its related genes. In this study, a graphic method was proposed to identify novel glioma related genes based on known glioma related genes. A weighted graph was constructed according to the protein-protein interaction information retrieved from STRING and the well-known shortest path algorithm was employed to discover novel genes. The following analysis suggests that some of them are related to the biological process of glioma, proving that our method was effective in identifying novel glioma related genes. We hope that the proposed method would be applied to study other diseases and provide useful information to medical workers, thereby designing effective treatments of different diseases.

EUROCONTROL aims at improving the design and use of the European routes. Inefficiencies in the design of airspace and use of the air route network are considered to be a major causal factor of flight inefficiencies in Europe. The European ATM system is the sum total of a large number of separate Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSP) whereas the US system is operated by a single ANSP. Airspace fragmentation following National Borders makes flight routes inefficient due to non requested air routes, flight time, excessive fuel burn, CO and NOx emissions. That is the reason why airspace and the fixed route network should be reorganised to satisfy airspace operator needs and maintain required safety levels. The focus of the paper is to show the differences between planned flights and actual trajectories in terms of flight distance, duration and fuel burn. In connection with this, an overview of these indicators in Europe and the USA was made. Be to, buvo padaryta šių rodiklių apžvalga Europos ir JAV mastu.
