Four-dimensional textiles are textiles that can change shape or function over time by the influence of a stimulus, mainly force and heat. In this review, the focus is on 4D textiles made by additive manufacturing which is built on the concept of 4D printing. A literature survey in Web of Science and Scopus was carried out, which resulted in 29 contributions on additive manufacturing on pre-stressed textiles. In this paper, an overview of materials, production technologies and testing methods is given. The concepts of form giving and shape change transferred to 4D textiles are classified. The influencing factors on the properties of the material structure are presented. The main focus of the literature lies in defining process and material properties for improving the adhesion. Only limited research has been conducted on simulating the material behavior. Ideas for applications exist but no research has been conducted on real applications. Therefore, the challenges are identified, and future research directions are derived.

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) is widely recognized as a critical pillar of advanced manufacturing and is moving from the design shop to the factory floor. As AM processes become more popular, it is paramount that engineers and policymakers understand and then reduce their environmental impacts. This article structures the current work on the environmental impacts of metal powder bed processes: selective laser melting (SLM), direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), electron beam melting (EBM), and binder jetting (BJ). We review the potential benefits and pitfalls of AM in each phase of a part's lifecycle and in different application domains (e.g., remanufacturing and hybrid manufacturing). We highlight critical uncertainties and future research directions throughout. The environmental impacts of AM are sensitive to the specific production and use-phase context; however, several broad lessons can be extracted from the literature. Unlike in conventional manufacturing, powder bed production impacts are dominated by the generation of the direct energy (electricity) required to operate the AM machines. Combined with a more energy-intensive feedstock (metal powder), this means that powder bed production impacts are higher than in conventional manufacturing unless production volumes are very small (saving tool production impacts), and/or there are significant material savings through part light weighting or improved buy-to-fly ratios.

ABSTRACT Purpose: Blockchain protocol comprises several attributes, among which transparency stands out. In this vein, the purpose of this article is to advance research on the implications of transparency (as derived from the use of blockchain) for business sustainability (BS). Originality/value: There is continuing interest in applying blockchain for creating and improving transparency, with this latter representing a strategic asset in BS. However, despite advancing this subject, the literature still lacks studies that explain the organizational circumstances in which blockchain can enable progress on transparency in the scope of BS. Design/method/approach: The methodology involved an integrative literature review on blockchain, transparency, and BS, and it was conducted with the support of Web of Science and Scopus to attend the research objective. Findings: The results favored the proposal of two analytical frameworks: one refers to the concepts of blockchain and transparency presented by the academic literature, and the other to the benefits of blockchain and transparency for the economic, social, and environmental BS dimensions. Furthermore, discussions involved deducing propositions about the use of blockchain to improve transparency in the BS context. The propositions open future research directions to studies that aim to test them qualitatively or quantitatively.

Purpose This paper aims to study the main trends of scientific research in Islamic finance’s social aspects to clarify place, role and functions, especially in the context of increasing social problems. To achieve this goal, this paper focuses on the social component of Islamic finance, analyzes publications on social Islamic finance in the Web of Science database, covering the period from 1979 to 2020, specify the geographical localization of research networks, determines the most cited authors and their scientific position. Design/methodology/approach The authors have applied several literature review techniques, a bibliometric citation and co-citation analysis, a co-authorship analysis and a review of the most cited papers. The analyzes’ results allow us to offer five future questions in Islamic social finance, zakat and waqf, which have not been investigated before and could influence Islamic social finance and Islamic finance research. Findings The authors also derive and summarize five leading future research questions. Research limitations/implications This is a limitation of using only the Web of Science Core Collection database as the premier resource and the most trusted citation index for the world’s scientific and scholarly research. Further study might expand the types of analyzed units, include more keywords and include other databases, such as Scopus. Originality/value This paper can be considered as an inspirational one to future researchers and policymakers in Islamic social finance.

Abstract Flexible and digital manufacturing technologies like additive manufacturing (AM) have evolved as the future of modern manufacturing with the capability of obtaining multi-dimensional components and material functionality improvement. In the past decade, the additive manufacturing of steel has advanced into an effective approach for controlling local microstructure and fabricating hybrid build with tailored performance. As an emerging technology, there are still some challenges in the additive manufacturing of steel that need to be circumvented in order to attain the full potentials of this novel technology. This review paper examines the current state of additively manufactured steel as well as the associated microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion of as-built steel. An insight into further and future research directions is provided.

PurposeThis study aims to map the development of research on family business in tourism and hospitality and provides insights into the key contributors, key areas and current dynamics, and suggests future research directions in the field.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses the Web of Science (WoS) database to identify the 124 articles published in the theme. The study uses bibliometric indicators such as the co-citation network, word co-occurrence network to analyze the publication and citation structure using Science of Science (Sci2), OpenRefine, and Gephi.FindingsThe top authors, top journals and major themes are recognized using bibliometric techniques. The study identifies six keyword clusters: entrepreneurship, innovation, and empirical collaborating with tourism, hospitality, and family business. The country-wise collaboration indicates the lack of research in the eastern hemisphere of the world. The co-authorship shows studies shared among individuals of a few organizations. The trends from bibliographic coupling depict the evolution of research.Research limitations/implicationsThe scope of data collection for the network analysis is limited to the WoS. Incorporating papers from other databases might provide different network structures and insights.Originality/valueThe study is the first of its kind in the theme of family businesses in tourism and hospitality and will contribute to the literature by identifying future research directions.

With the advent of the fifth-generation mobile communication technology era, mobile technology will further change tourism. However, studies on mobile technology in tourism from the perspective of bibliometrics and visualization are limited. This research aimed to systematically, comprehensively, and objectively analyze the current research status and potential future research directions in this field through a visual bibliometric analysis of mobile technology research in tourism. This study used CiteSpace software to analyze 803 related journal papers from the Web of Science Core Collection and provided insights into the research of mobile technology in tourism from the aspects of research trends, research areas, top journals, author/institution/country or region collaboration networks, research keywords, and research foundations. The study can help related personnel in academia and industry to fully understand the research of mobile technology in tourism and provides valuable references for related research fields on bibliometric and visualized analysis.

AbstractPart orientation is a critical task in the process of additive manufacturing product realisation. Recently, various computer-aided methods for this task have been presented in the literature. The coexistence of different methods generates a series of questions: What are the common characteristics of these methods? What are the specific characteristics of each method? What are the main issues in computer-aided part orientation for additive manufacturing currently? What are the potential research directions in this field in the future? To approach these questions, a review of the existing computer-aided part orientation methods for additive manufacturing is presented in this paper. This review starts with a clarification of a part orientation problem and a classification of the existing methods into two categories according to their process of solving the problem. An overview of the representative methods in each category is then carried out from the aspects of approaches for orientation search, generation, or selection, estimation of build orientation factors, determination of weights of factors, establishment of overall objective function, and demonstration of effectiveness. After that, a discussion about the main issues in computer-aided part orientation for additive manufacturing is documented based on the overview. Finally, a suggestion of some future research directions in this field is reported.

Interest in research connected to information disorders has grown considerably in recent years. The phrase “information disorders” refers to three different notions: dis-, mis-, and malinformation. It is difficult to pin down this new and dynamic phenomenon of informational disruption and to assess its impact on society. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis on the complexity of information disorders using the Web of Science Core Collection database from 1975 to June 2021. We analyzed 8964 papers with the goal to have an overall picture of the topic, clarify the knowledge framework of research in this field, examine the development dynamics, identify future research directions and increase the understanding of the research on information disorders. The following are our main findings: the number of publications, authors, and journals has increased; research on information disorders has earned considerable attention in multiple academic fields; there are more and more works written in collaboration by scholars from different parts and cultures of the world. This paper makes important contributions to the literature, not only by providing researchers and practitioners with a coherent and perceptible intellectual basis to find answers, but also by bringing valuable insights for further investigation and future research directions.

In this review, additive manufacturing technologies using liquid resins as materials are reviewed from the perspective of printing technologies and materials. Most importantly, recent progress of new printing technologies and printers as well as novel printing materials and their applications are summarized, based on which potential future research directions are discussed at the end of this review.
