We propose a new strategy for the parallelization of mesh processing algorithms. Our main contribution is the definition of distributed combinatorial maps (called n-dmaps), which allow us to represent the topology of big meshes by splitting them into independent parts. Our mathematical definition ensures the global consistency of the meshes at their interfaces. Thus, an n-dmap can be used to represent a mesh, to traverse it, or to modify it by using different mesh processing algorithms. Moreover, an nD mesh with a huge number of elements can be considered, which is not possible with a sequential approach and a regular data structure. We illustrate the interest of our solution by presenting a parallel adaptive subdivision method of a 3D hexahedral mesh, implemented in a distributed version. We report space and time performance results that show the interest of our approach for parallel processing of huge meshes.

Abstract Backstepping represents a promising control law for fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Its non-linearity and its adaptation capabilities guarantee adequate control performance over the whole flight envelope, even when the aircraft model is affected by parametric uncertainties. In the literature, several works apply backstepping controllers to various aspects of fixed-wing UAV flight. Unfortunately, many of them have not been implemented in a real-time controller, and only few attempt simultaneous longitudinal and lateral–directional aircraft control. In this paper, an existing backstepping approach able to control longitudinal and lateral–directional motions is adapted for the definition of a control strategy suitable for small UAV autopilots. Rapidly changing inner-loop variables are controlled with non-adaptive backstepping, while slower outer loop navigation variables are Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controlled. The controller is evaluated through numerical simulations for two very diverse fixed-wing aircraft performing complex manoeuvres. The controller behaviour with model parametric uncertainties or in presence of noise is also tested. The performance results of a real-time implementation on a microcontroller are evaluated through hardware-in-the-loop simulation.

Fuzzy transform is a technique applied to approximate a function of one or more variables applied by researchers in various image and data analysis. In this work we present a summary of a fuzzy transform method proposed in recent years in different data mining disciplines, such as the detection of relationships between features and the extraction of association rules, time series analysis, data classification. After having given the definition of the concept of Fuzzy Transform in one or more dimensions in which the constraint of sufficient data density with respect to fuzzy partitions is also explored, the data analysis approaches recently proposed in the literature based on the use of the Fuzzy Transform are analyzed. In particular, the strategies adopted in these approaches for managing the constraint of sufficient data density and the performance results obtained, compared with those measured by adopting other methods in the literature, are explored. The last section is dedicated to final considerations and future scenarios for using the Fuzzy Transform for the analysis of massive and high-dimensional data.

We developed and applied metasynthesis methods to expand previously reported thematic descriptions of parents’ internal definition of “being a good parent to my seriously ill child” as part of a larger study to examine parenting of children with serious illness. Our systematic approach included: literature search, purposeful selection of grounded theories regarding parenting a seriously ill child, study summaries, mapping evidence of good parent themes onto structural elements of grounded theory, cross-study comparisons, and theoretical memoing to summarize analytic insights. Twenty-five grounded theory studies from 32 reviewed reports reflected multiple conditions (n=5), countries (n=10) and family members (n=386 families). We report a worked example of the processes used to extend the original good parent themes and detail our processes through one good parent theme. The methods we describe are a promising approach to extend thematic analysis findings and advance thematic expansions toward development of more formal theoretical syntheses.

This paper deals with the performance comparison over simulated micro-cogeneration units based on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC or PEM), when the fuel is processed by means of two contrasting techniques. On the one hand with the use of conventional natural gas steam reforming (SR), and on the other, the adoption of an innovative palladium based membrane-reformer. After the definition of the plant layout, which reflects the results of previous studies and includes all the components of a 4 kW PEM for combined heat and power production, the comparison among the plant performances is carried out with two approaches: (i) using a in-house developed code (GS), able to calculate mass and energy balances, as well as a number of specific component parameters, already applied to a large variety of plant simulations, and (ii) using a commercial code (Aspen Plus®). The comparison allows to validate the simulated performance results as well as to evidence the advantages of the two approaches and to assess the effects of different simulation assumptions.

This chapter discusses the reception of what David Rapoport has called the “anarchist wave of assassinations” as the first wave of global terrorism in East Asia at the turn of the twentieth century. It shows how the terms “terrorism” and “anarchism” were translated into East Asian languages; how the practice of assassinations relates to indigenous traditions of political violence; and in which sense one can speak of “modernity” in the Chinese assassination attempts undertaken. What interested the radicals receiving European models most was the perceived “new” strategy of systematic assassination campaigns as lived out by the Russian Narodnaya Volya, and its potential for “new” groups of people to join political violence, namely women. This strategy was attractive for a time to many kinds of ideological commitments, but especially to the Chinese Nationalists. Thus, this chapter calls into question the definition of the “first wave” in Rapoport’s “four wave concept” as “anarchist.”

Since 2000, the Scottish Government has adopted a gendered definition of domestic abuse which explicitly positions it as both a cause and a consequence of gender inequality. Following the launch of a new strategy to prevent and eradicate violence against women and girls, the Scottish Government announced proposals to create, for the first time, a bespoke offence of domestic abuse, designed to encompass the spectrum of abusive acts that constitute domestic abuse, including emotional and psychological abuse. The new offence is intended to better reflect the experience of victims subject to coercive control, improve the criminal justice response and facilitate access to justice. It represents one of the most radical attempts yet to align the criminal justice response with contemporary policy and feminist conceptual understanding of domestic abuse as a form of coercive control. Drawing on feminist scholarship which has interrogated the value of law reform, we critically assess the scope of the legislation, the likely challenges associated with its use in the Scottish context, and the potential for unintended consequences.

Image processing algorithms are based on the idea that all pixels of it ranked over the orderly rows, which make the algorithms easier to be implemented. Extending image processing algorithms to triangular mesh is always an important idea for triangular mesh processing. But since the topology of a triangular mesh is not as simple as an image, triangular mesh processing is relatively difficult. This paper presented a new sphere image representation of a triangular mesh, which is an image as well as a graphic, and based on it, image processing algorithms can be easily extended to a triangular mesh. Experimental results show that by simply extending the image processing algorithms the presented sphere image representation can effectively reduce difficult of segmentation and mesh editing. Moreover the sphere image representation can be used for more triangular mesh processing applications.

AbstractBackgroundHigh-fidelity preservation strategies for primary tissues are in great demand in the single cell RNAseq community. A reliable method will greatly expand the scope of feasible collaborations and maximize the utilization of technical expertise. When choosing a method, standardizability is as important a factor to consider as fidelity due to the susceptibility of single-cell RNAseq analysis to technical noises. Existing approaches such as cryopreservation and chemical fixation are less than ideal for failing to satisfy either or both of these standards.ResultsHere we propose a new strategy that leverages preservation schemes developed for organ transplantation. We evaluated the strategy by storing intact mouse kidneys in organ transplant preservative solution at hypothermic temperature for up to 4 days (6 hrs, 1, 2, 3, and 4 days), and comparing the quality of preserved and fresh samples using FACS and single cell RNAseq. We demonstrate that the strategy effectively maintained cell viability, transcriptome integrity, cell population heterogeneity, and transcriptome landscape stability for samples after up to 3 days of preservation. The strategy also facilitated the definition of the diverse spectrum of kidney resident immune cells, to our knowledge the first time at single cell resolution.ConclusionsHypothermic storage of intact primary tissues in organ transplant preservative maintains the quality and stability of the transcriptome of cells for single cell RNAseq analysis. The strategy is readily generalizable to primary specimens from other tissue types for single cell RNAseq analysis.

The paper considers a number of changes made to the Strategy of the Russian Federation National Security, which was approved by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation on July 2, 2021, in comparison with the previous strategy approved in 2015. The study is important since a new strategy has been recently enacted, and a uniform understanding of the key concepts reflected in this document seems essential. Some issues related to the fixed definitions of such concepts as “national security of the Russian Federation”, “national interests of the Russian Federation”, “strategic national priorities of the Russian Federation”, “national security protection”, “threat to national security”, “national security protection system” are analyzed. The study compares the definition of the concept “national security” fixed in the Strategy of the Russian Federation National Security, which was approved in 2021, with the options for other definitions given in the similar documents that were previously in force in Russia during the post-Soviet period of Russian history. The study additionally focuses on the transformation of national interests of the Russian Federation, which are enlisted in the recent strategy. In particular, the paper discusses the wording “saving the people of Russia, developing human potential, improving the quality of life and the well-being of citizens”. The author emphasizes that undervaluation of the strategic importance of the social sphere as a security factor in the course of economic and political reforms may cause threat of loss of citizens’ confidence in government officials, which, under certain conditions, can lead society and the country to a constitutional crisis and the collapse of federal status.

Abstract BACKGROUND Consensus on the definition of extant video signs of concussion have recently been proposed by representatives of international sporting codes for global consistency across professional leagues. OBJECTIVE To review the reliability of the proposed international consensus video signs of concussion in National Rugby League (NRL) head impact events (HIEs). METHODS The video signs of concussion were coded for every HIE during the 2019 NRL season. Coding was conducted blinded to the concussion status. Frequency, sensitivity, specificity, and a receiver operating characteristic curve were calculated. RESULTS There were 943 HIEs identified over the 2019 NRL season, of which 106 resulted in a diagnosed concussion. The most frequently observed video sign in concussed athletes was blank/vacant look (54%), which was also the most sensitive video sign (0.54, CI: 0.44-0.63), while the most specific was tonic posturing (0.99, CI: 0.99-1.00). In 43.4% of diagnosed concussions none of the 6 video signs were present. The 6 video signs demonstrated a “fair” ability to discriminate between concussion and nonconcussion HIEs (area under the curve = 0.76). CONCLUSION International consensus agreement between collision sports for extant video signs of concussion and the definition of those extant video signs are clinically important. The selection of signs requires rigorous assessment to examine their predictive value across all sports and within individual sports, and to determine further video signs to compliment and improve the identification of possible concussion events within various sports. The current study demonstrated that, for NRL-related HIEs, the diagnostic accuracy of video signs varies.
