The elemental ratios in phytoplankton are important for predicting biogeochemical cycles in the ocean. However, understanding how these elements vary among different phytoplankton taxa with physiological changes remains limited. In this paper, we determine the combined physiological–elemental ratio changes of two phytoplankton species, Scrippsiella trochoidea (Dinophyceae) and Heterosigma akashiwo (Raphidophyceae). Our results show that the cell growth period of S. trochoidea (26 days) was significantly shorter than that of H. akashiwo (32 days), with an average cell abundance of 1.21 × 104 cells·mL−1 in S. trochoidea and 1.53 × 105 cells·mL−1 in H. akashiwo. The average biovolume of S. trochoidea (9.71 × 103 μm3) was higher than that of H. akashiwo (0.64 × 103 μm3). The physiological states of the microalgae were assessed based on elemental ratios. The average ratios of particulate organic nitrogen (PON) to chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and particulate organic carbon (POC) to Chl-a in S. trochoidea (57.32 and 168.16) were higher than those of H. akashiwo (9.46 and 68.86); however, the ratio of POC/PON of the two microalgae was nearly equal (6.33 and 6.17), indicating that POC/Chl-a may be lower when the cell is actively growing. The physiological variation, based on the POC/Chl-a ratio, in different phytoplankton taxa can be used to develop physiological models for phytoplankton, with implications for the marine biogeochemical cycle.

The non-host specific Pseudomonas syringae phytotoxin Coronatine (COR) causes chlorosis and promotes toxicity by inducing physiological changes in plants. We performed transcriptome analysis to better understand plants' transcriptional and metabolic response to COR. Toward this end, mock-treated and COR-treated soybean plants were analyzed by RNA-Seq. A total of 4,545 genes were differentially expressed between the two treatments, of which 2,170 were up-regulated whereas 2,375 were down-regulated in COR treated samples. Gene annotation and pathway analysis conducted using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) and Gene Ontology (GO) databases revealed that the differential genes were involved in photosynthesis, jasmonic acid (JA) synthesis, signal transduction, and phenylpropane metabolism. This study will provide new insights into COR mediated responses and extend our understanding of COR function in plants.

Abstract. Stress-related stimuli may be presented outside of awareness and may ultimately influence health by causing repetitive increases in physiological parameters, such as blood pressure (BP). In this study, we aimed to corroborate previous studies that demonstrated BP effects of subliminally presented stress-related stimuli. This would add evidence to the hypothesis that unconscious manifestations of stress can affect somatic health. Additionally, we suggest that these findings may be extended by measuring affective changes relating to these physiological changes, using measures for self-reported and implicit positive and negative affectivity. Using a repeated measures between-subject design, we presented either the prime word “angry” ( n = 26) or “relax” ( n = 28) subliminally (17 ms) for 100 trials to a student sample and measured systolic and diastolic BP, heart rate (HR), and affect. The “angry” prime, compared to the “relax” prime, did not affect any of the outcome variables. During the priming task, a higher level of implicit negative affect (INA) was associated with a lower systolic BP and diastolic BP. No association was found with HR. Self-reported affect and implicit positive affect were not related to the cardiovascular (CV) activity. In sum, anger and relax primes elicited similar CV activity patterns, but implicit measures of affect may provide a new method to examine the relationship between (unconscious) stress and health.
