Abstract Clearcut harvesting decreases structural complexity, eliminates old and genetically superior legacy trees, extirpates mature-forest floor vegetation, and creates hot and dry postharvest microclimates. The short-lived, exposure-tolerant, boreal tree species that regenerate in large forest openings are believed to be less able, than the late-successional Acadian species they replace, to adapt to the climate warming expected during the next forest rotation. A strip silviculture design is presented that includes limited canopy opening, “no-traffic” areas, maintenance of “full-cycle” survivors, and programmed return harvest intervals that approximate natural gap disturbance as a means of arresting the further increase of boreal species and restoring Acadian species on the landscape. Within the confines of this silvicultural discipline, two management options are described to accommodate extremes of future energy availability.

A model is presented of relationships between the density of Leadbeater's possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri) and other tree-hollow dependent possums and gliders and the density of potential nest trees (PNT) in Eucalyptus regnans/E. delegatensis forests, where PNT are defined as all living or dead trees with d.b.h. more than or equal to 0.5 m and ht. more than or equal to 6 m. The total density of all possums and gliders increased linearly with PNT density, in an approx. 1:1 ratio, then plateaued at an av. max. density of 11.3 animals per 3 ha once PNT density exceeded 12 per 3 ha. Regression models predict that G. leadbeateri will be absent from the majority of sites with less than 4.2 PNT per 3 ha and will increase linearly in density to an av. max. of 7.8 animals (or 3.1 colonies) per 3 ha on sites with more than 10 PNT per 3 ha. The absence of G. leadbeateri from sites with fewer than 4.2 PNT per 3 ha was attributed to: competition for hollows from other species; use of more than one PNT by individual colonies; and unsuitability of hollows in up to 2 out of every 3 PNT. Regression models predict that current logging prescriptions in ash forests, which call for retention of a minimum of 15 trees for every 10 ha clear felled, will result in elimination of G. leadbeateri from the majority of clearfelled coupes, and will reduce the total number of hollow-dependent possums and gliders to less than one-eighth of their av. max. density in unlogged forest. A range of forest management options are presented and discussed to ensure the continued availability of PNT for hollow-dependent arboreal mammals in timber production forests.

Forest management at the landscape level is a requirement for reducing wildfire hazard. In contexts where non-industrial private forest ownership prevails, the collaboration among multiple owners has been proposed as the way forward to reach consistent fuel management at that level. The current literature has been focused on identifying the factors that lead to collaboration among owners. In this study we explored other ways to reach landscape-level management in addition to the collaborative way, such as those that may be promoted through land renting or selling. Different contexts and owner types may require different solutions. Thus, we explicitly asked which alternative would be chosen by a given forest owner, from the following set: keeping individual management, entering a multi-owner collaborative arrangement where they delegate management, renting to a pulp company; or selling the land. In a context of small-scale ownership and high recurrence of wildfires in Portugal, a face-to-face survey was carried out to a sample of landowners. Our results suggest that there is not an a priori generalized unwillingness of owners to delegate management, rent or sell the land and thus they seem prone to align themselves with policy strategies to promote management at the landscape level. Multinomial logit regression modelling allowed us to explain and predict owners’ choices among the aforementioned set of alternative management options. We found that choosing multi-ownership collaboration, as opposed to keeping current individual management, is associated with passive management under harsher conditions, by non-residents without bonding capital. The identified factors of owners’ choices show the limited scope of tenancy and land-market mechanisms to promote landscape-level management. The best policy option was found to depend on the owner profiles prevailing in the target area. This suggests that studying the existing context and owner types is required to design effective policies.

Pine pitch canker (PPC), caused by the pathogenic fungus Fusarium circinatum (Nirenberg and O’ Donnell), is a serious threat to pine forests globally. The recent introduction of the pathogen to Southern Europe and its spread in Mediterranean region is alarming considering the immense ecological and economic importance of pines in the region. Pines in forests and nurseries can be infected, resulting in severe growth losses and mortality. The pathogen is known to spread in plants for planting and in seeds, and results from recent studies have indicated that F. circinatum may also spread through phoretic associations with certain insects. With this review, we aim to expand the current understanding of the risk of insect-mediated spread of PPC in different parts of Europe. Through the joint action of a multinational researcher team, we collate the existing information about the insect species spectrum in different biogeographic conditions and scrutinize the potential of these insects to transmit F. circinatum spores in forests and nurseries. We also discuss the impact of environmental factors and forest management in this context. We present evidence for the existence of a high diversity of insects with potential to weaken pines and disseminate PPC in Europe, including several common beetle species. In many parts of Europe, temperatures are projected to rise, which may promote the activity of several insect species, supporting multivoltinism and thus, further amplifying the risk of insect-mediated dissemination of PPC. Integrated pest management (IPM) solutions that comply with forest management practices need to be developed to reduce this risk. We recommend careful monitoring of insect populations as the basis for successful IPM. Improved understanding of environmental control of the interaction between insects, the pathogen, and host trees is needed in order to support development of bio-rational strategies to safeguard European pine trees and forests against F. circinatum in future.

Abstract Forest managers in the Lake States need to evaluate multiple-resource relationships. In response to this need, a framework called INTERIM was developed. It links models of individual resource components and is capable of predicting responses to certain forest management activities in the Lake States. A modular framework was used so that components could be included, deleted, or modified as needed. INTERIM links tree growth with understory cover, white-tailed deer habitat, and nongame-bird diversity index. The effects of forest management on water yield and annual snowmelt peak runoff can also be estimated. This is one of the first attempts in the Lake States to link components that can estimate production relationships for different land management options. The result is a useful tool for identifying research needed to develop a comprehensive and practical multiple-resource model. North J. Appl. For. 1:80-84, Dec. 1984.
