A comprehensive diachronic analysis (1951–2010) of precipitation and temperature regimes has been carried out at the national and regional scale in Italy to investigate the impact of climate aridity on the agricultural system. Trends in climate aridity have been also analysed using UNEP aridity index which is the ratio between rainfall and potential evapotranspiration on a yearly basis. During the examined time period, and particularly in the most recent years, a gradual reduction in rainfall and growing temperatures have been observed which have further widened the gap between precipitation amounts and water demand in agriculture.

The present work aims at investigating the ability of diatoms to re-establish their community after a severe environmental stress such desiccation. Diatoms were subjected to extreme environmental stress to observe their survival capability. Samples of sediment were collected from three sites, Maqal, Abu Flos and Al-Faw along the course of Shatt Al-Arab river. Different temperature regimes were implemented for testing the ability of diatoms to recover desiccation. Experiments were performed at various temperatures, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ℃. A total of 67 diatom species were identified and included freshwater forms (25%), brackish water forms (25%) and marine species (26%), as well as 24% of taxa with undefined ecological preferences. The recovery rate of diatom species at all sites appeared to be rather similar. 40%, 38% and 37% of all taxa encountered were able to recover desiccation at sites 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Recovering ability of those species varies with variable temperature. Favourable temperature for most species to regrow ranged between 15 and 25 oC. Nitzschia palea exhibited the maximum growth rate at all temperatures (10-35 oC). 32% of all epiphytic species encountered were able to recover at 20 oC. Five species: Craspedostauros britannicus, Nitzschia invisitata, Pinnularia quadratarea, Simonsenia sp. and Tryblionella plana were not previously reported in Iraq and considered as new to the region. A new species, Synedropsis abuflosensis, was found. The outcome of the present work clearly indicates that some species of diatoms can recover after exposure to sever environmental stress.

The Oligocene Smrekovec Volcanic Complex is a remnant of a submarine composite stratovolcano with a complex succession of lavas, autoclastic, pyroclastic, syn-eruptive resedimented volcaniclastic and siliciclastic deposits was a favourable environment for the development of peperites. Despite very complex alteration related to the stratovolcano-hosted hydrothermal system with a deep igneous source, locally elevated geothermal gradients and superimposed hydrothermal/geothermal regimes controlled by the emplacement of a shallow intrusive body, authigenic minerals in peperites - particularly pumpellyite and actinolite - show higher temperature stability ranges than those in the underlying and overlying volcanic deposits irrespectively of their lithofacies, porosity and permeability. The formation of authigenic minerals in peperites, such as laumontite, pumpellyite, epidote, prehnite or actinolite, was apparently controlled by ephemeral and localised high-temperature regimes originating from the parent lava flow. Heated pore waters in the host sediment that could have undergone local mixing with deuteric fluids circulated in peperites until thermal gradients persisted, and were the cause of alteration of juvenile clasts and the mingling sediment. The development of pumpellyite required a suitable precursor - fine-grained volcanic ash.

AbstractUsing interviews with former militants and previously unpublished documents, this article traces the genesis and internal dynamics of the Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (People's Revolutionary Army, ERP) in El Salvador during the early years of its existence (1970–6). This period was marked by the inability of the ERP to maintain internal coherence or any consensus on revolutionary strategy, which led to a series of splits and internal fights over control of the organisation. The evidence marshalled in this case study sheds new light on the origins of the armed Salvadorean Left and thus contributes to a wider understanding of the processes of formation and internal dynamics of armed left-wing groups that emerged from the 1960s onwards in Latin America.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.
