The paper presents simulation of the dynamics of a permanent magnet linear actuator with soft magnetic mover and relatively long stroke 60 mm. The simulation is carried out using decoupled approach where the magnetic field problem is solved separately from the electric circuit and mechanical motion problems. The obtained results are compared with experiment. .

This contribution presents the novel Hydraulic Infinite Linear Actuator (HILA). It focuses on the control of motion and is based on simulation and analysis. The novel actuator consists of two symmetric double acting cylinders with a common piston rod and hydraulically detachable pistons. Alternatingly one cylinder engages and drives the load while the other retracts, the HILA thus works in a kind of rope climbing motion. The purpose of this contribution is to study the motion control of the HILA and to mimic the behaviour of a conventional cylinder. The HILA has three degrees of freedom which are temporarily coupled compared with one in a conventional cylinder. Further, the HILA with the chosen hydraulic system has two continuous and two digital control inputs. The challenge to be tackled is to combine the short stroke back and forth motions of the cylinders into a continuous smooth motion ofthe whole actuator. Results from simulations and analyses show that the investigated concepts can keep the jerk within acceptable limits for many applications.

AbstractCavity optomechanics has recently emerged as a new paradigm enabling the manipulation of mechanical motion via optical fields tightly confined in deformable cavities. When driving an optomechanical (OM) crystal cavity with a laser blue-detuned with respect to the optical resonance, the mechanical motion is amplified, ultimately resulting in phonon lasing at MHz and even GHz frequencies. In this work, we show that a silicon OM crystal cavity performs as an OM microwave oscillator when pumped above the threshold for self-sustained OM oscillations. To this end, we use an OM cavity designed to have a breathing-like mechanical mode at 3.897 GHz in a full phononic bandgap. Our measurements show that the first harmonic of the detected signal displays a phase noise of ≈−100 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz. Stronger blue-detuned driving leads eventually to the formation of an OM frequency comb, whose lines are spaced by the mechanical frequency. We also measure the phase noise for higher-order harmonics and show that, unlike in Brillouin oscillators, the noise is increased as corresponding to classical harmonic mixing. Finally, we present real-time measurements of the comb waveform and show that it can be fitted to a theoretical model recently presented. Our results suggest that silicon OM cavities could be relevant processing elements in microwave photonics and optical RF processing, in particular in disciplines requiring low weight, compactness and fiber interconnection.

Airworthiness standards of Korea recommend verifying structural safety by experimental tests and analytical methods, owing to the development of analysis technology. In this study, we propose a methodology to verify the structural safety of aircraft components based on airworthiness requirements using an analytical method. The structural safety and fatigue integrity of a linear actuator for flap control of aircraft was evaluated through numerical analysis. The static and fatigue analyses for the given loads obtained from the multibody dynamics analysis were performed using the finite element method. Subsequently, the margin of safety and vulnerable area were acquired and the feasibility of the structural safety evaluation using the analytical method was confirmed. The proposed numerical analysis method in this study can be adopted as an analytical verification methodology for the airworthiness standards of civilian aircraft in Korea.

This paper describes a new concept in pulse controlled motor and precision linear actuator techniques. Piezo translators [PZT] employed to provide reciprocating primary motion are connected to a load via a controllable electrorheological fluid [ERF] clutch to form a programmable speed and step-width drive. Ideal considerations are used to quantify the limiting potential of the drive and details are given of its development and progress.
