Reduction of leakage is a major problem in water hydraulic systems. With a servo valve, it is possible to reduce the internal leakage by reducing the clearance between a spool and a sleeve. However, because the clearance is reduced, wear tends to occur easily between the spool and sleeves when the servo valve is driven. As a result, the durability of the servo valve is reduced. Attention is paid to the durability against wear of ceramic materials, and the wear can be suppressed by using ceramics as the materials of the spool and sleeve. Thus, one can check whether the wear between the spool and sleeve can be suppressed, thereby improving the durability of the servo valve.

Due to their large application quantities with extremely low efficiency, pollutant emissions, high fuel consumption, and oil price, researches on the environment protection and the energy saving of construction machinery, especially hydraulic excavators, become very necessary and urgent. In this chapter, the authors proposed a complete study for the excavators' hydraulic energy recovery systems. This study is divided into two parts. In the first one, an overview for the energy saving principles is discussed and classed based on the type of the energy recovered. In the second part and once the energy recovery system is selected, the authors proposed a new approach to design the energy recovery system under a typical working cycle. This approach, the global optimization method for parameter identification (GOMPI), uses an optimization technique coupled with the simulated model on simulation software. Finally, results concluded that applying GOMPI model was an efficient solution as it proves its accuracy and efficiency to design any energy recovery patent applied to hydraulic systems.

A small capacity servo valve was developed for a small size water hydraulic manipulator, focusing the saving energy. The new servo valve optimizes the machines small flow rate use, makes the stroke longer for wideband use, reduces leakage and makes control easier. The test and evaluation of the servo valve was conducted by examining flow rate characteristics, leakage characteristics and responsibility. The flow rate and leak rate of the servo valve shows to be the same as the oil hydraulic servo valve, while the step and frequency response show good controllability for the water hydraulic manipulator.

The worst problem we are facing in the hydraulic system is the serious loss of energy, due to bad matching between the power components and the actuators and the large pressure loss when oil flowing though the various hydraulic elements, especially in speed governing system. However, Servo pump which is introduced in this paper can cover the problems mentioned above finely. The most difficult thing is its mathematical modeling, in the paper, it is established according to the actual situation. Here, the modeling between servo valve and cylinder, between cylinder and pump are established respectively, then these are connected by geometry relationship, finally ,the whole modeling is completed.

This paper will develop a novel electro-hydraulic actuator with energy saving characteristics. This system is able to work in differential configurations through the shifting algorithm of the valves, meaning that this developed system can be adjusted flexibly to obtain the desirable working requirements including the high effectiveness of energy recovery from the load, high velocity or torque. Instead of establishing the mathematical model for the purpose of the dynamic analysis, a model of the developed actuator is built in AMESim software. The simulation results reveal that the system is able to save approximately 20% energy consumption compared with a traditional without energy recovery EHA. Furthermore, to evaluate the accuracy of the model, experiments will be performed that prove strongly that the experimental results are well matched to the results attained from the simulation model. This work also offers a useful insight into designing and analyzing hydraulic systems without experiments.
