Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) has been proved to be an indispensable factor in the economic development of any country; and for Nigeria, it has a more critical role to play. This paper examines the relevance of science, technology and mathematics education (STME) for national development and self-reliance of Nigerian citizens. A historical overview of the interconnectivity of science, technology and mathematics education (STME) and self reliance is highlighted. The current situation and challenges facing STME in Nigeria are also highlighted to bring out the theoretical relevance of (STME) for self reliance which actually has not been practically realized. The author's recommendations include the call for training and re-training of STME teachers to update their knowledge, and the provision of long vocation/weekend programmes for out of school individuals, among others.

AbstractMathematics is fundamental for many professions, especially science, technology, and engineering. Yet, mathematics is often perceived as difficult and many students leave disciplines in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as a result, closing doors to scientific, engineering, and technological careers. In this editorial, we argue that how mathematics is traditionally viewed as “given” or “fixed” for students’ expected acquisition alienates many students and needs to be problematized. We propose an alternative approach to changes in mathematics education and show how the alternative also applies to STEM education.

The research paper aims to highlight the STEM approach as one of the modern integrated approaches in the field of mathematics education. STEM which means the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math has its significant role in the development of curricula in the Arab world generally and particularly in mathematics curricula. Out-of-school environments offer a unique opportunity for experiental learning which transcends the role of educational resources and teachers. This article introduces the special topic of out-of-school learning in science and mathematics education. First, we present the theoretical underpinnings from the movement towards crossing the boundaries of school in educational practices and broadening educational spaces. We continue with the key facets of out-of-school learning through a constructivist approach, aided by the concept of mediation environments as the third educator from a socio-material perspective. Furthermore, we focus our discussion on a selection of articles from this special number as an international overview on out-of-school learning. In the conclusion section, we discuss the gaps that the following works fill, as well as new questions that arise in the area. The closing remarks highlight the promotion of active learning in students, considering the role of the environment as the third educator.

It is known that an informal learning environment (i.e., out-of-school) increases the quality of teaching and learning activities. Informal environments also provide many advantages such as enriching the content of learning. Moreover, it is emphasised that the science-technology-society-environment (STSE) learning does not effectively involve in the Turkish education system. From this point of view, informal learning environments should be considered in order to enable students’ understanding of the STSE relation. Within the scope of this study, it was aimed to determine the effectiveness of study visit on students’ understanding of STSE. The research was conducted with 14 male students in the 5th-grade level in the 2016– 2017 academic year. This research, which used a recycling-solid waste collection centre, a botanic garden, a planetarium, a science centre and a zoo, a few informal learning environments, was conducted according to the case study design method. In the study, views on science-technology-society questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, observation forms and diaries were used as data collection tools. The data indicated that the informal learning environments were inadequate to promote conceptual change; however, it was effective to comprehend newly learnt concepts. In addition, it was also concluded that informal learning environment provided students to capture the understanding of STSE relations. It is important to develop a student’s awareness to enable them to understand and apply the basics of sciences, mathematics, and engineering. In this study, we aim to implement STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education by enabling students to gain awareness on their own. We propose study aids and procedures for a project activity using study aids for STEM education. To enable students to gain awareness, teachers should provide a study environment that empowers students to develop their own solutions and plans and to actively develop and test their models. The project-based learning (PBL) system provides an appropriate study environment. Based on this viewpoint, we developed study aids using LEGO MINDSTORMS Set and Simple & Powered Machines Set as materials and procedures for a project activity using the study aids for PBL education. We also give examples of project activities implemented in our education system for students in various fields and we report the responses of students who participated in these project activities.
