161 Australorp X Rhode Island Red (RIR) X New Hampshire (NH) and 166 White Leghorn (WL) imported fowls were kept in insulated housing; 161 Australorp X RIR X NH, 166 WL, 154 RIR X WL and 148 RIR X NH X RIR fowls were kept in open houses. In the 6 groups resp., live weight at 126 days of age averaged 1602, 1227, 1578, 1234, 1397 and 1539 g, food consumption 4.02, 4.49, 4.03, 4.47, 4.25 and 4.17 kg/kg gain, overall laying percentage 56.6, 56.4, 52.5, 53.4, 55.0 and 37.5, egg production/hen 202, 201, 188, 191, 196 and 134, and egg weight 56.3, 56.3, 55.0, 55.8, 55.0 and 57.5 g. Egg mass averaged 1335, 1323, 1191, 1151, 1126 and 796 kg and food consumed/kg eggs produced 3.68, 3.53, 3.71, 3.25, 3.37 and 4.74 kg. Live weight at 16 mth of age averaged 2894, 2040, 2665, 1874, 2132 and 2517 g, and mortality 12.8, 11.1, 33.6, 43.5, 52.8 and 50.4%. (Abstract retrieved from CAB Abstracts by CABI’s permission)

A short-term bioassay test using Single Comb White Leghorn (SCWL) laying hens was developed to study various fractions of fababeans, to determine the location of the egg-weight-depressing factor (EWDF), and to determine the effect of heat treatment on EWDF activity. A second objective of the research was to develop an extraction method to facilitate studies on identification and mode of action of the factor(s). The 14-day period proved useful in confirming that EWDF activity was concentrated in the cotyledon portion of fababean seeds and associated with the protein rather than the starch component. Ethanol-water extraction was effective in concentrating the factor.

The effects of substituting various levels of sorghum for wheat in diets for laying hens were studied. Egg production, egg weight, feed consumption, body weight and hatchability of eggs from Single Comb White Leghorn hens were not affected by the proportion of sorghum in the diet. Two hundred and twenty-five 19-wk-old Single Comb White Leghorn pullets of a commercial strain were fed diets containing either 0, 10 or 20% ground flax seed. Birds fed 20% dietary flax were smaller and ate more feed (P < 0.01). Hen performance in terms of egg production and egg-shell deformation was unaffected by dietary flax throughout the trial. Egg weight followed this trend until period 12, when control-fed hens laid significantly larger eggs (P < 0.01). The metabolizable energy of diets containing 10 and 20% ground flax was significantly less than that of the control corn-soybean diet (P < 0.01). Malondialdehyde levels in the liver of birds fed 20% dietary flax were moderately elevated, although this was not indicative of serious lipid peroxidation. Percentage liver fat was significantly lower in birds fed all levels of dietary flax (P < 0.05). There was a significant increase of N-3 fatty acids, and particularly linolenic acid, in the livers of birds fed all levels of dietary flax. The data from taste-panel studies involving fresh and stored eggs were somewhat inconclusive, although in general there was a slight perception of off-flavour in eggs from flax-fed birds. The effects of the production system, breed cross, and their interaction on performance, egg quality, and hatching traits were evaluated. Rhode Island Red and Black Australorp were crossed with Naked Neck chickens (first generation RNN, and BNN, respectively). These crosses were mated among themselves and crossed to produce four crossbreds: RR (RNN x RNN), BB (BNN x BNN), RB (RNN x BNN), and BR (BNN x RNN). Thirty-six pullets and 9 cockerels from each crossbred were maintained in three production systems: the aviary system (AV), conventional cages (CC), and enriched cages (EC). Thus there were 48 pullets and 12 cockerels in each production system. Bodyweight, egg production percentage, and egg weight were highest in EC, followed by CC and AV. Higher egg weight, egg surface area, and egg volume were also observed in EC compared with CC and AV. Fertility and hatchability were higher and early embryonic mortality was lower in AV than in EC and CC. Bodyweight, egg production percentage, egg weight, egg volume, and surface area were higher for RB and BR than for BB and RR. Fertility and hatchability were similar for RB and BR. RR was similar to BR, but lower than RB. BB had the lowest fertility and hatchability. Thus, chickens in EC performed better than in the other systems, except that hatching traits were better in AV. The study investigated the effect of moisture loss on the Hatchability of chicken, Duck and Quail eggs. A total of 480 eggs; 120 from Rhode Island Red (RIR) chicken, 60 from Zending duck and 300 from Japanese quail were collected and set in the same incubator with 3 replications to compare hatchability results among the species. Moisture loss percentage was highest (P<0.01) in quail eggs (16.19%), intermediate in chicken eggs (7.76%) and lowest in duck eggs (7.24%). Among 3 genotypes, at all (0, 7 and 14 days) ages, eggs weight was highest (p<0.01) in Zending duck (60.50g), intermediate in RIR chicken (59.188) and lowest in quail (9.55g). Egg weight loss at 7 and 14 days of incubation were highest in quail, intermediate in chicken and lowest in duck. There was no appreciable differences of hatchability on set eggs and fertile eggs among species (p>0.05). Apparently, the hatchability on fertile eggs was similar and higher in chicken (58.3%) and quail (58.9%) and slightly lower in duck (53.7%). However, hatchability on set eggs was highest in quail (58.3%) intermediate in chicken (43.3%) and lowest in duck (40.7%). Chick weight at hatchings was highest (p<0.01) in duck (37.55g), intermediate in chicken (34.56g) and lowest in quail (5.61 g). Chick weight as per cent of egg weight was found highest (p<0.01) in duck (62.07%), intermediate in chicken (58.40%) and lowest in quail (54.24%). There were some relations among the different hatchability results depending on species. There were marked variations in moisture effect among the species. It was clear that hatchability not only affected by species but moisture loss also played an important role on hatchability. It was concluded that under similar environment, hatchability on fertile eggs were similar and higher in quail and chicken and lower in duck. But hatchability on set eggs was highest in quail, intermediate in chicken and lowest in duck. It imply that some losses of moisture with various level may be necessary to enhance egg hatchability is required to support hatching results in different species of poultry.J. Environ. The study was carried out to identify some production traits of the pure Barred Rock 1 (BR1) line and rapid × slow feathering line crosses derived from the BR1 pure line, in addition to F1 crosses of all these dam lines with Rhode Island Red 1 sire line. The BR1 line previously used a brown layer dam line for barred/non-barred day-old chick auto-sexing and synthetic slow and rapid wing feathering lines. Parent lines showed significant differences in sexual maturity and egg production (P < 0.01) and early embryonic mortality (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in weight at sexual maturity, average egg weight, hatchability of fertile eggs, hatchability of total eggs set, and middle and late embryonic mortalities. A significant difference was found among F1 crosses with respect to weight at sexual maturity (P < 0.05), but no significant difference (P > 0.05) could be determined for age at sexual maturity and egg production. Overall, rapid feathering hens had better production traits than slow feathering hens. The dual crossbred parent lines exhibited almost the same level of egg production traits compared with the pure line.
