The genus Oediceroides Stebbing, 1888 represents a group of 23 species of amphipods that live from shallow coastal areas to abyssal plains. Most of these species have been collected in deep waters from localities in the South Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and only one species has been found in the Mediterranean Sea. Many oediceroids inhabit waters more than 200 meters deep with only four species confined to shallow waters. This is the first occasion in which a species belonging to the genus Oediceroides is recorded for the Gulf of Mexico. Here, we describe O. improvisus sp. nov., a species of marine deep-water amphipod collected in 925 meters of water. This species has carapace, mouthpart and pereopodal characters that unite it with other members of the genus. It differs from all other species due to unique rostral and pereopod seven characters, all discussed in detail further in this description. To date, only 20 deep-sea (>200 meters) benthic amphipods have been recorded in the Gulf of Mexico, in comparison with more than 200 species of shallow water representatives from the same region. Our study provides evidence that the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico still hold undescribed biodiversity.

A new species of deep-water brachyuran crab, Euphrosynoplax dincao, from southeastern Brazil is described and illustrated. The genus Euphrosynoplax currently consists of two species, E. clausa Guinot, 1969, and E. campechiensis Vázquez-Bader & Gracia, 1991, both only known from the Gulf of Mexico. The new species can be easily separated from its northern counterparts by a suite of carapace and appendage characters. Euphrosynoplax campechiensis is recorded for the first time from the Caribbenan Sea (Guadeloupe and between Saint Kitts and Nevis).

The genus Hymeraphia currently comprises three species and all records of the genus are from the northeast Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. The present paper describes a new species, H. vaceleti sp. nov. from a deep-water canyon, off southwest Ireland. H. vaceleti sp. nov. is morphologically distinct from other Hymeraphia species and 28S rRNA sequences show substantial differences between our new species and other Hymeraphia spp. We present data on the prevalence of sponge species established on the basis of single specimens (singletons) or uniques (species only known from a single locality). We argue for the recognition of singletons for species that are rare or from habitats that are very difficult to survey or sample, such as the deep sea.

A new species of the serpulid genus Metavermilia Bush, 1905 and a new record of the genus Omphalopomopsis Saint-Joseph, 1894 are described from deep-sea lava rocks collected from 2,013 m at Cross Seamount, southwest of the Hawaiiarchipelago. Metavermilia zibrowii sp. nov., differs from its congeners mostly by the presence of a simple and concaveoperculum, extent of the thoracic membrane and tube morphology. Omphalopomopsis langerhansii (Marenzeller, 1885)is the type species of the genus and it is only known through its type specimen. This species is characterized by a simpleoperculum with a shallow convex calcareous endplate, cylindrical peduncle, presence of Apomatus chaetae and high num-ber of teeth in the thoracic uncini. This is the first record of this species outside the type locality and both genera are newly recorded for the Hawaiian Islands.

Chalinidae is a family of haplosclerid sponges with a delicate reticulated chaonosomal skeleton of uni-, pauci- or multispicular primary lines which are connected by unispicular secondary lines, and with an ectosomal skeleton, if present, formed by a regular hexagonal, unispicular, tangential reticulation (Weerdt 2002). Currently, the family harbors only five valid genera (Chalinula, Cladocroce, Dendrectilla, Dendroxea and Haliclona; Soest et al. 2008), although recent molecular studies suggest that a new rearrangement of the present classification is needed (Redmond et al. 2007). Cladocroce was described by Topsent (1892) from specimens collected in the Atlantic Ocean. The principal characteristic of this genus is the presence of multispicular fiber tracts with a rather dense subisotropic reticulation in between (Weerdt 2002). After that, 10 species have been described, most of them from deep waters and cold climates (Putchakarn et al. 2004). Only three species have been found living in shallow waters: C. aculeata Pulitzer-Finali, 1982 from the Great Barrier Reef, C. burapha Putchakarn et al., 2004 from the Gulf of Thailand, and C. tubulosa Pulitzer-Finali, 1993 from the port of Mombasa, in Kenya. Sponge taxonomy studies in the Mexican Pacific coast have been focused mainly on hadromerids, and particularly on boring sponges (Carballo et al. 2008), and the current knowledge of haplosclerids is very scarce (Cruz-Barraza & Carballo 2006). In this paper, a new species of Cladocroce is described and compared with the other species recorded worldwide. With this contribution the genus Cladocroce increases to 12 species.

A new species of the rare caridean genus Bresilia Calman, 1896, B. cinctus, is described and illustrated on the basis of a single ovigerous female specimen collected from Sagami Bay, central Japan, at 218–318 m depth. The new species is morphologically most similar to B. rufioculus Komai & Yamada, 2011, known only from shallow water cave of Ie Island (depths 14–17 m), Okinawa Islands, Ryukyu Islands, but many characters, including the proportionally shorter rostrum, the well developed suborbital lobe of the carapace, and the presence of a spiniform seta on the ventral surface of the pereopod 1 palm, immediately distinguish the new species from B. rufioculus. Bresilia cinctus n. sp. is the first species of the genus known from the Japanese main islands. The discovery of the new species led us to reassess the merit of the informal division of Bresilia proposed by Komai & Yamada (2010). An identification key to the ten named species of Bresilia is presented.

A new species of the marine gastrotrich taxonThaumastodermais described. A single specimen of this species,Thaumastoderma antarcticasp. nov., was extracted from silty sediment sampled at one station of the Andeep-1 cruise, about 150 km to the north of the South Shetland Islands (Drake Passage, South Atlantic Ocean). This paper provides the first record of this genus from the deep sea and the second description of a macrodasyid gastrotrich living in an abyssal habitat. The new species is characterized by several apomorphic features, among them a caudal pair of strongly elongated dorsal cirrata tubes. A phylogenetic analysis of the genusThaumastodermareveals thatTh. antarcticais closely related toTh. coronariumandTh. appendiculatum. Furthermore, the analysis offers an evolutionary scenario and a hypothesis for the internal phylogeny of this taxon while supporting its monophyly. It is the first time a cladistic analysis has been conducted for a delimited group of gastrotrichs, i.e. for all known members of a genus.

A new spionid polychaete was discovered in deep-sea sediments in the eastern Mediterranean Sea during an expedition by the Ocean Exploration Trust. Specimens were collected by the E/V Nautilus in August 2012 off Turkey, at a depth of 2216 m on the Anaximander Seamount at the Amsterdam mud volcano site. Cores were taken from sediments covered with microbial mats. The new species belongs to the Pygospiopsis-Atherospio Group, which has unusual neuropodial hooks, modified neurosetae in some anterior setigers, and branchiae in middle body segments that are broad, flattened, and fused to the dorsal lamellae. The new species is assigned to a new genus and species, Aciculaspio anaximanderi n. gen., n. sp., and is unusual in having a reduced setiger 1 lacking notosetae; well-developed pre- and postsetal lamellae that encompass the neurosetae and notosetae; notopodial lamellae free from the branchiae in anterior setigers that become fused and flattened in middle and posterior segments; unidentate hooded hooks in both noto- and neuropodia; neuropodial spines in setigers 4–10; and a pygidium with three anal cirri. Aciculaspio anaximanderi n. gen., n. sp. is the first species in the Atherospio-Pygospiopsis Group collected from a deep-water cold seep habitat.
