Focusing on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, this article looks at the interaction between religious culture and film between the 1940s and 1980s. Its first main feature is an examination of the causes of the closure of the Playhouse cinema in Stornoway in 1977–79 and the role of the Calvinist churches and the local authorities in this and other film censorship. It identifies a growing vigour on the part of some churchmen, notably of the Free Presbyterian Church, and the role of one of them in publicly imposing ‘a curse’ upon the manager of the Playhouse for daring to schedule the film ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ with its ‘blasphemous’ depiction of Jesus Christ. It notes the increasing attempts of local politicians in the 1950s, 60s and 70s to impose stricter religious formulae through statutory powers, especially after the creation of the separate Western Isles Council in the mid 1970s. The article explores church and lay attitudes to cinema through oral testimony, the tensions between urban and rural with Lewis, and the wider social, cultural, linguistic and demographic contexts in which both opposition to, and tolerance of, cinema need to be understood in an island less estranged from modern media than might be supposed.

The article indicates the role of local authorities in influencing the development of tourism, including the creation of regional tourism products. The aim of paper is to define and characterize the capabilities of local authorities concerning the development of tourism, including legal, organizational, investment and promotional instruments. Also, the importance of regional tourism products was substantiated, including their structure, conditions and approaches to creation as well, as their role in regional development. The article is an introduction to in-depth research on the importance of regional tourism products in providing social and cultural security.

The article describes the problem of the contribution of the inhabitants of Tovmachchyna to strengthening the combat capability of the Ukrainian Galician army during the Ukrainian-Polish war of 1918–1919. The publication shows the role of the county authorities, which, realizing the importance of helping the Ukrainian army in the struggle against the external enemy, since the first days of its functioning strongly urged residents of the province to join the gathering of food, clothes, money and ammunition for the defense of the UGA. Also the author analyzes the normative legal acts of local authorities, dealing with material and social security of personnel of the Ukrainian Galician army and members of their families. Active participation on the full support of the UGA was enacted and the residents of Tovmachchyna becаmеa reliable support for its defenders. A crucial role in this process was played by the Patriotic enthusiasm in the community that led to the emergence of a large number of supporters and gave impetus to the creation of the various funds and committees assistance, through which the Ukrainian population of the county, in terms of a lack of resource capabilities and external aggression, in fact, served the function of the state material support of the Ukrainian armed forces. Revolutionary events 1918–1919 on the territory of Belarus, the creation of the Belarusian statehood of newest history require comprehensive, including the sphragistical, research. In particular, a special study requires the role of this period in the formation of Soviet symbols. The process of creating the symbols of the world’s first socialist states was reflected in the seals created and used during this period. An analysis of the content of the imprints of the seals in the 805 National Archive of the Republic of Belarus fund revealed the use of seals by local authorities with symbols of state formations that had disappeared at moment of use and were the ideological enemies of the Communists.

Abstract Tomasello offers a compelling account of the emergence of humans’ sense of obligation. We suggest that more needs to be said about the role of affect in the creation of obligations. We also argue that positive emotions such as gratitude evolved to encourage individuals to fulfill cooperative obligations without the negative quality that Tomasello proposes is inherent in obligations.

The essence of artefacts is typically taken to be their function: they are defined in terms of the goals or aims of the artisans that make them. In this paper, an alternative theory is proposed that emphasizes, via a reconstruction of Aristotle's various comments about the nature of artefacts, the role of the moving, or efficient, cause of artefacts. This account shifts the emphasis to the role played by the investment of expertise into the creation (and subsequent being) of artefacts. It turns out that expertise is prior in being and prior in explanation to the function of artefacts, and thus plays the most fundamental role in the explanation of the ontology of artefacts.

The article is devoted to the study of evaluative tools used in modern French media in order to form the media image of a representative of the political elite. The techniques used in the creation of a memorial media portrait of Jacques Chirac (1932—2019), President of France from 1995 to 2007 are considered. The research material was the most prestigious French print media of various political orientations, published in late September — early October 2019 in connection with the death of the ex-President of the French Republic. The relevance of the research topic is dictated by the close attention of modern linguistics to axiological phenomena, differently presented in different types of discursive practices. The novelty of the study is due to the appeal to the analysis of the complex of evaluation tools used in the French print media when characterizing the former leader of the state during the nation’s farewell period. The estimated potential of the title of the article and its influence on the formation of the estimated vector of the entire text of the publication are shown. A systematic analysis of the assessment expression means, reflected in the memorial media portrait of the politician, is given. The factors that influenced the peculiarities of their use in this type of media portrait are revealed.
