Background. The objective of this study was to establish how accurately elite athletes carried out the task of a coach to perform an exercise at a given intensity. Methods. Cardiovascular indices were registered and analysed during a two-step research process. Two groups including six well-trained long-distance runners and 21 healthy non-athletes performed graded stress exercise up to the inability to continue the task. Runners took part in the second study in which heart rate and running pace were recorded during an aerobic training session. Results. Research findings showed that athletes demonstrated higher physical performance, but the maximum heart rate values achieved in the last fatigue phase did not differ significantly between the groups. No ischemic events were observed in elite athlete group during the entire physical test. Relatively stable heart rate indices in the maximal physical load step were observed in both groups, but heart rate indices were significantly lower during all physical load steps in the group of elite runners. Conclusions. Elite athletes carried out the coach’s task only in the first phase of running and further modified the task by maintaining the stability of the cardiovascular system

Chest bands have been the most used device to monitor heart rate during running. However, some runners feel uncomfortable with the use of bands due to the friction and pressure exerted on the chest. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine if the photoplethysmography (PPG) system Polar Precision Prime used in the Polar Vantage M watch could replace chest bands (Polar V800-H10) to monitor heart rate with the same precision. A group of 37 people, middle-distance and long-distance professional runners, participated in this study. The submaximal speed was determined using 50% of the participants’ maximum speed in the height of their season. The Polar Vantage M reported high correlation ( r > 0.84) and high ICC (ICC > 0.86) when comparing its heart rate monitor with the Polar V800 synchronised with H10 chest strap during recording intervals of more than 2 min. The systematic bias and random error were very small (<1 bpm), especially for the 600 s recording interval (0.26 ± 5.10 bpm). Nevertheless, the error increased for 10 s (−5.13 ± 9.20 bpm), 20 s (−8.65 ± 12.60 bpm) and 30 s (−10.71 ± 14.99 bpm) time intervals. In conclusion, the PPG Polar Precision Prime included in the Polar Vantage M demonstrates that it could be a valid alternative to chest bands for monitoring heart rate while running, taking into account some usage considerations, good strap adjustment and an initial calibration time during the first 2–3 min.

In order to forecast the stability of deep roadway and optimize the parameters of bolts, the complex stress environment and the multivariate surrounding rocks characteristics of deep roadway were analyzed. Then the classification prediction method and the numerical simulation method were simultaneously used to analysis the stability of surrounding rocks. Furthermore, the supporting parameters of bolts were also designed optimally. It was shown that the characteristics of stress distribution, deformation and failure zone of surrounding rocks are not ideal. So it is necessary to optimize the supporting parameters of deep roadway. All these research findings will provide the theory basis for bolts of deep roadway and will ensure the optimization of bolts and the stability of deep roadway in the long run.

Abstract Navigating the research and researchers’ field: Reflections on positionality in (assumed) insider research To challenge rigid ideas about objectivity in social science research, qualitative researchers question their own subjectivity in the research process. In such endeavors, the focus is mainly on the positionality of the researcher vis-à-vis their respondents in the research field. In this contribution, I argue that the positionality of the researcher in academia, what I refer to as the researchers’ field, is equally important as it influences the way research findings are received and evaluated. Through reflections on positionality in my insider research concerning labour relations and exploitation in Chinese migrant businesses in the Netherlands and Romania, I explore how my positionality as an insider negatively influenced my credibility and approachability in the researchers’ field. I conclude that it is necessary to pay more attention to researchers’ positionality in academia as it may shed light on and make it possible to discuss the written and unwritten standards of researchers’ credibility and approachability as an academic in the researchers’ field. Accordingly, this could provide insights into the causes of inequalities in academia and contribute to the current challenge for more diversity in academia.

Introduction: Research networks undertake work collaboratively on complex areas of research. Few studies examine how these networks develop their knowledge translation activity. Focusing on a domestic violence research network (DVRN), the aim of this study was to answer the question: What is the shared understanding of knowledge translation and activity in a domestic violence research network?Methods: A sample of DVRN members undertook an anonymous online survey about their knowledge translation activity.Results: Completed by 49 of a potential 65 DVRN members (75% completion rate), findings suggested members use multiple knowledge translation definitions, and that different stages of the research process engage people with lived-experience and policymakers undertaking lower levels of engagement than practitioners. Innovative engagement mechanisms to communicate research findings were limited, and knowledge translation barriers included budget, time, capacity, limitation of models, organisational emphasis and support. Finally, there was inadequate knowledge translation evaluation.Conclusion: Overcoming knowledge translation barriers is essential to ensure meaningful collaboration particularly with survivors who are often the missing voice of knowledge translation. Future studies could determine what impact, if any, increasing engagement of survivors and policymakers during all stages of the research process has on knowledge translation.<br />Key messages<br /><ul><li>This study has identified the need for meaningful collaboration with survivors and policymakers during all stages of the research process.</li><br /><li>Innovative engagement mechanisms are essential to engage end-users.</li><br /><li>A focus on evaluation of knowledge translation strategies is warranted.</li></ul>

Category: Ankle Introduction/Purpose: Following lower extremity surgery patients are often required to utilize assistive devices in order to perform activities of daily living. As technology and assistive devices continue to improve, providers are faced with selecting a device that is safe while providing high patient satisfaction and a quick return to actives. The purpose of the current study was to compare physical exertion and subject preference between a hands-free single crutch and standard axillary crutches in foot and ankle patients. Methods: A prospective, randomized crossover study was performed using 35 orthopedic foot and ankle patients from within one treatment facility. Each participant had demographic data and heart rate recorded. The patients were then randomized to an assistive device. All participants completed a 6-minute walk test (6MWT); immediately following each 6MWT heart rate, self-selected walking velocity (SSWV), perceived exertion using OMNI Rating of Perceived Exertion (OMNI-RPE) and perceived dyspnea using Modified Borg Dyspnea Scale was obtained. The patients then completed another 6MWT using the other assistive device and was asked the same questions. After completing both 6MWTs participants were asked which assistive device they would prefer to use. Results: A total of 35 patients were included with a median age of 32-year-old. The hands-free crutch was preferred by 86% of participants. Regression analysis was used to test if factors such as gender, height, weight, BMI predicted patient preference of iWalk vs. Crutch. None of these factors were found to be significant. Student t-tests and ANOVAs were performed separately for dyspnea, fatigue ratings, distance (meters) and heart rate between iWalk and crutch all were found to be significant (p<0.05, p=1.13e-11, p=2.29e-13, p=5.21e-05, respectively). The axillary crutch group had higher SSWV (0.8 vs 0.77m/s) but was not found to be significant. Neither group had any falls, however, 58% of axillary participants complained of axillary/hand pain while the hands-free group had 14% complain of proximal strap discomfort. Conclusion: Patients preferred the hands-free crutch while reporting lower perceived dyspnea and fatigue. The hands-free group demonstrated lower physiologic demand, which correlated with patient perception.

The paper explores some of the issues involved in evaluating educational policy initiatives. It gives examples of how research findings can be evaluated and draws lessons for the ways in which policymakers can interact usefully with researchers. It argues that while central government's use of research evidence is often highly selective and concerned with its own perceived short term interests, a broader view of the research process is more productive and beneficial. The issues of class size, school league tables and the effects of homework are studied in detail and the often provisional nature of research evidence is emphasised as well as the uncertainty surrounding the findings of individual studies.

One of very important prerequisites for achieving good results in races, in addition to genetic predisposition, quality training and good health, are optimal values for number of erythrocytes, concentration of haemoglobin and hematocrit, of which depends efficient oxygen supply of muscles during great efforts. The stated values, along with data on heart rate, are useful indicators of the degree of horse fitness and readiness for horse race. The influence of physical exertion on the values of basic hematological parameters as well as on heart rate, was investigated on 6 trotters, in training at the Belgrade racetrack (one head of Italian trotter, male, 3 years old; 3 heads of American trotter, male, 3,4 and 6 years old and two heads of Serbian trotter, female, 4 and 5 years old). The blood samples for hematological tests were taken by punction of jugular vein in resting phase - immediately before the commencement of work, after light trot warming for 3000 m and fast trot for 1000 m, with 30 minutes rest between the two runnings. The heart rate was monitored continuously by radio telemetry cardiometer, from the moment they were taken from their boxes and harnessing to the completion of work. The obtained results confirm the relationship between the rise of heart rate and hematocrit values: maximal hematocrit values were determined after the first running (0.49?0.05, in regard to 0.42?0.03 in resting phase), but 30 minutes after the second running there was a slight drop of hematocrit values (0.46?0.04). The blood samples in both cases were taken after fast trot during which there were recorded maximal pulse values, so in the moment of sampling the pulse lowered close to the values in resting - after the first running from 192.23?19.66, and after the second from 180.33?17.22 to 40.67?5.76.

AbstractObjective: The purpose of this text is to identify approaches to defining and subsequently reviewing the definitions of uncertainty and risk as interdisciplinary terms which are of key importance in modern management.Methodology: The work is theoretical. The main method used in the research process was the analysis of scientific literature. A one-dimensional logical classification method was also used, in order to categorize approaches to defining uncertainty and risk, satisfying the exhaustive and mutually exclusive criteria in the selection of categories of approaches.Findings: The main results of the work are: 1) identification of approaches to defining uncertainty and risk, 2) interdisciplinary review of definitions of uncertainty and risk indicating the criteria to distinguish between the two, and 3) determination of the meaning of the terms uncertainty and risk in modern management.Value Added: Considering the approaches to defining uncertainty and risk taken from many fields and disciplines of science, this text is a compendium of theoretical knowledge for the proper understanding and meaning of these concepts in management.Recommendations: The research findings can have implications for both management theory as well as the practice of organization management.

Abstract Background Quantitative assessment of individual body adaptability to physical training performed with the purposes of health maintenance is particularly necessary in the elderly age, to avoid the risk of overstrain induced by inappropriate exercises workload and physical stress. For that purpose, heart rate monitors and heart rate variability (HRV) analysis are nowadays commercially available. However, their reliability to guide individualized fitness training in elderly people needs to be tested, knowing that users might not have medical education. Objective To preliminary quantify autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses to graded physical effort and recovery in healthy elderly basing on the parasympathetic nervous system (PNSi), the sympathetic nervous system (SNSi) and the stress (STRi) indices, derived by short-term and time-varying HRV analysis. Methods ECG of a 75 healthy male subject was monitored, from April to November 2020, during three times/week training sessions with a professional bike–ergometer. Each session consisted of 10 minutes baseline rest, 5 minutes warm-up, 30 minutes work and 10 minutes recovery. According to age, the training workload was graded from low (65–75 watt/min), to moderate (75–85 watt/min), semi-intensive (85–95 watt/min) and intensive (95–110 watt/min). For this pilot study, ECG data of only 40 training sessions (10 sessions for each workload to evaluate reproducibility) were analyzed with Kubios Premium software (version 3.4.1), in the time (TD) and frequency (FD) domains, with nonlinear (NL) methods and with time-varying (TV) algorithms. Short-time HRV was calculated from 2-minutes intervals. The PNSi, SNSi and STRi induced by each workload were averaged and compared. Results Average values of PNSi, SNSi and STRi were significantly different (p&lt;0.05) among training sessions carried out with different workloads (Table 1A) and among measurements obtained at rest, at every 5 minutes step of each 30 minutes training session, and at 1 and 5 minutes of recovery (Table 1B). Interestingly, the correlation between SNSi and STRi was strictly linear (R= 0,98), whereas that between PNSi and STRi was better fitted by a cubic function (R=0,82 with cubic vs 0.68 with linear function), when evaluated either as a function of the sessions' workloads (Figure 1A), or of four time-intervals of each training session (Figure 1B). PNSi and SNSi were inversely correlated, with cross-point at about 15 minutes of training and 75 watt/min workload. Conclusions The calculation of PNSi, SNSi and STRi from HRV analysis is an efficient method for quick and simplified quantitative assessment of dynamic ASN adaptation to effort-induced stress from HRV analysis. If confirmed, the method may be useful for safer and even remote monitoring of training/rehabilitation in elderly. However, more detailed evaluation of spectral and NL parameters may be necessary to interpret more complex patterns of abnormal cases. FUNDunding Acknowledgement Type of funding sources: None. Abstract Introduction. So far there have been few studies on the effect of interval training with active recovery aimed at increasing aerobic power on the physical capacity of long-distance runners. Unlike standard interval training, this particular type of interval training does not include passive rest periods but combines high-intensity training with low-intensity recovery periods. The aims of the study were to determine the effect of aerobic power training implemented in the form of interval training with active recovery on the physical capacity of amateur long-distance runners as well as to compare their results against those of a group of runners who trained in a traditional manner and only performed continuous training. Material and methods. The study involved 12 recreational male long-distance runners, who were randomly divided into two groups, consisting of 6 persons each. Control group C performed continuous training 3 times a week (for 90 minutes, with approximately 65-85% VO2max). Experimental group E participated in one training session similar to the one implemented in group C and additionally performed interval training with active recovery twice a week. The interval training included a 20-minute warm-up and repeated running sprints of maximum intensity lasting 3 minutes (800-1,000 m). Between sprints, there was a 12-minute bout of running with an intensity of approximately 60-70% VO2max. The time of each repetition was measured, and the first one was treated as a benchmark in a given training unit. If the duration of a subsequent repetition was 5% shorter than that of the initial repetition, the subjects underwent a 15-minute cool-down period. A progressive treadmill test was carried out before and after the 7-week training period. The results were analysed using non-parametric statistical tests. Results. VO2max increased significantly both in group E (p < 0.05; d = 0.86) and C (p < 0.05; d = 0.71), and there was an improvement in effort economy at submaximal intensity. Although the differences were not significant, a much greater change in the post-exercise concentrations of lactate and H+ ions was found in group E. Conclusions. The study showed that interval training with active recovery increased VO2max in amateur runners with higher initial physical capacity and stimulated adaptation to metabolic acidosis more than continuous training.
