Background: Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) has a high recurrence in Indonesia. This condition may occur as a result of the failure of compliance with post-acute management following a heart attack by CHD patients. One of the causes is the lack of effective health education.Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the feasibility of the workbook in improving patients’ self-efficacy (SE) and quality of life (QoL).Methods: This research used a quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest control design. A pretest was done to the patients who were treated in the cardiac intensive unit, and a posttest was carried out at the end of the first and second month after the pretest. The population was all post-acute CHD patients who were admitted to the cardiac intensive unit in one of the referral hospitals in West Java, Indonesia. A purposive sampling was used and obtained 39 respondents who were divided into control and intervention groups. The intervention group was given a health education using a workbook, and the control group was given a direct health education. Self-efficacy was measured using a questionnaire developed by the authors, with high validity and reliability. A SF-12 instrument was used for measuring the quality of life.  Data were analyzed using a descriptive quantitative analysis such as mean, Mann Whitney test, and Independent t-test. To estimate the effects of the intervention to QoL and SE, Kruskal Wallis test and One-way ANOVA were used.Results: The results showed that there was an increase in SE and QoL in both groups, either in the posttest 1 or posttest 2. The comparison of QoL in the pretest, posttest I and II obtained p=.452, .741, and .826, while SE between and within groups obtained p = .732, .220, and .009, respectively.Conclusions: Health education using the workbook was significantly more effective to increase SE than QoL of the CHD patients.

Every year, there is a significant increase in deaths caused by coronary heart disease (CHD). Many programs have been implemented to reduce the morbidity and mortality of CHD. Early detection and control of CHD risk factors is a challenge in educating adults about lifestyle changes. Also, it is recognized that self-efficacy is a vital factor in initiating and maintaining healthy behaviors. Health education is given as an effort to increase self-efficacy, but educational media that are innovative in promoting CHD health are limited. This study aimed to determine differences in the self-efficacy of adults in preventing coronary heart disease before and after given health education. This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design. The sample were 60 respondents which were grouped into 30 respondents in the intervention group and control group through purposive sampling. The HA-Man education intervention was given 3 times for a-week, self-efficacy was evaluated through a structured questionnaire interview. The results showed that there were differences in self-efficacy before and after intervention in the intervention group (p <0.05). This research is expected to provide information in the development of educational media in increasing awareness and self-efficacy of people who are at risk of CHD

This cluster randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the effects of an intervention to teach resourcefulness on depression and coping style of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). A convenience sample of 72 patients in community settings took part. Participants in the intervention group (n = 36) received an 8-week intervention based on the concept of resourcefulness, plus routine health education. Participants in the control group (n = 36) received routine health education only. After the intervention, participants in the intervention group had significantly higher scores on resourcefulness and coping styles, and lower scores on depression than those in the control group (both ps < .001). The findings suggest that a well-developed intervention to teach resourcefulness could help patients with CHD to be more resourceful, improve their level of depression, and choose more effective strategies to cope with stress.

Abstract Background The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of using telemedicine to improve the quality of life of parents of infants with congenital heart disease surgery after discharge. Methods A prospective randomized controlled study was conducted in a provincial hospital in China from November 2020 to April 2021 to compare the quality of life of parents of infants with congenital heart disease surgery after discharge between the WeChat follow-up group and the outpatient follow-up group. A total of 84 patients (42 in each group) and 168 parents (84 in each group) participated in this study. Results One month after discharge, the SAS and SDS scores of parents in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P&lt;0.05). Compared with the SAS and SDS scores at discharge, the scores of parents in the intervention group were significantly lower at one month after discharge (P&lt;0.05), while the scores of parents in the control group were similar at one month after discharge (P&gt;0.05). At discharge, in both the intervention group and the control group, the SAS and SDS scores of the mothers were higher than those of the fathers (P&lt;0.05). One month after discharge, in the control group, the SAS and SDS scores of the mothers were higher than those of the fathers (P&lt;0.05). One month after discharge, in the intervention group, the SAS and SDS scores of the mothers were similar to those of the fathers (P&gt;0.05). The comparison of the SAS and SDS scores of parents with different education levels showed that in both the intervention group and control group, the lower the parents’ educational levels were, the higher their SAS and SDS scores were (P&lt;0.05). One month after discharge, in the control group, the lower the parents’ education levels were, the higher their SAS and SDS scores (P&lt;0.05). One month after discharge, in the intervention group, the SAS and SDS scores were similar among parents with different educational levels. The results of the WHOQOL-BREF scale showed that the scores of the physiological, psychological, social and environmental fields at one month after discharge in the intervention group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P&lt;0.05). Conclusion Providing health education and medical support to the parents of infants with congenital heart disease surgery after discharge via telemedicine can effectively relieve the parents’ anxiety and depression and improve their quality of life.

BACKGROUND Despite the growing burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD), disease knowledge and understanding are still lacking, especially in Bangladesh. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of a health education intervention in order to enhance knowledge, health-related quality of life (QOL), and motivation regarding healthy lifestyles among rural and periurban adults suffering from CKD. METHODS A parallel-group (1:1) randomized controlled trial is ongoing in the Mirzapur subdistrict, Bangladesh, where two groups of patients with CKD are being compared. Patients aged 18 years and over with CKD (stages 1-3) were enrolled in November 2020. Patients were randomly allocated into either the intervention group (n=63) or the control group (n=63). The control group received usual treatment, while the intervention group received health education through a CKD campaign facilitated by a nephrologist and via mHealth (ie, periodic mobile phone calls) from community health workers. Both groups were followed up for a period of 6 months. The primary endpoint is patients’ increased knowledge measured using the Chronic Kidney Disease Knowledge Questionnaire. The secondary endpoints are improved QOL measured using the standardized EuroQol 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5L) questionnaire as well as improvements in the levels of blood pressure, BMI, serum creatinine, fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin, cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, serum uric acid, blood urea nitrogen, and albumin to creatinine ratio. RESULTS Enrollment of participants began in November 2020; the intervention and follow-up were completed in May 2021. We enrolled 126 patients in the study. Patients’ mean ages were 57.97 (SD 15.03) years in the control group and 57.32 (SD 14.37) years in the intervention group. There were 45 out of 63 (71%) females in the control group and 38 out of 63 (60%) females in the intervention group. In addition, there were 38 out of 63 (60%) literate patients in the control group and 33 out of 63 (52%) literate patients in the intervention group. CONCLUSIONS It is expected that a combined approach, incorporating both a CKD campaign and mHealth, for health education may be an effective tool for increasing knowledge and improving QOL among patients with CKD. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) affects various aspects of quality of life (QoL), and self-care is the most important form of primary care and one of the main factors involved in the process of treating chronic diseases and improving the patients’ QoL. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of self-care education on the QoL of TB patients. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 110 TB patients referred to the TB coordinating Center in Zahedan, Southeastern Iran, in 2018, are studied. Participants were selected using convenience sampling and were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 55) and control (n = 55) groups. Data were collected using the tuberculosis quality of life-version 2 (TBQol-v2). For the intervention group, first, patients and their caregivers were divided into groups compromising of 4 to 6 members, and then three sessions of self-care education, including lectures and questions and answers meetings, each lasted for 30 minutes (in total 90 minutes) were provided to each group. Data were analyzed in SPSS version 21 using descriptive statistical tests, independent t-test, paired t-test, and chi-squared test. Results: Mean of the total QoL score of the two groups before the intervention was 67.56 ± 5.99 and 67.09 ± 5.03, respectively, indicating no significant difference (P = 0.65). But after providing the intervention, the mean score of patients QoL in the intervention group (74.84 ± 4.90) was significantly higher than the control group (67.98 ± 0.68) (P = 0.001). Conclusions: Since self-care education can effectively enhance the QoL of TB patients, it is recommended to provide such educations for both treatment and follow-up of these patients along with directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS).

Background Empowerment helps persons with a chronic disease to self-manage their condition and increase their autonomy and participation. MSmonitor (Curavista bv) is an interactive Web-based program for self-management and multidisciplinary care in multiple sclerosis (MS). It includes, among others, short questionnaires on fatigue (Modified Fatigue Impact Scale-5 [MFIS-5]) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL, Leeds Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life [LMSQoL]); long questionnaires on disabilities, perception of disabilities (Multiple Sclerosis Impact Profile), and HRQoL (Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54); a Medication and Adherence Inventory and an Activity Diary. The combination MFIS-5, LMSQoL, and Medication and Adherence Inventory constitutes the Quick Scan. Objective This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of MSmonitor on empowerment in patients with MS. Methods We conducted a quasi-experimental study in a general hospital. Of the 180 patients with MS, 125 were eligible, 30 used MSmonitor, and 21 participated in the study (mean age 45.4 years, SD 10.2 years). A total of 24 eligible patients who did not use MSmonitor constituted the control group (mean age 49.3 years, SD 11.4 years). At baseline and at 4 months, we assessed self-efficacy (Multiple Sclerosis Self-Efficacy Scale [MSSES]), participation and autonomy (Impact on Participation and Autonomy [IPA] questionnaire), and self-management (Partners In Health [PIH] questionnaire). Differences between time points and groups were tested with paired t tests and χ² tests. Results In the MSmonitor group, follow-up values remained unchanged for MSSES control (P=.19), MSSES function (P=.62), IPA limitations (P=.26), IPA problems (P=.40), PIH recognition and management of symptoms (P=.52), PIH adherence to treatment (P=.80), and PIH coping (P=.73), whereas the PIH knowledge score had improved (mean 27.8, SD 1.7 vs mean 28.7, SD 2.0; P=.02). The overall utilization rate of the program components was 83% and that of the Quick Scan was 95%. In the control group, all outcomes had remained unchanged. Conclusions The results suggest that for first-time users of the MSmonitor program and their health care providers, it may not be justified to expect a short-term improvement in empowerment in terms of self-efficacy, self-management, autonomy, or participation. Furthermore, a lack of effect on empowerment is not because of nonusage of the program components.

The survival of cancer patients is often short despite receiving therapy, but it really depends on various things including those that play an important role is the ability of patients to improve their life status in dealing with illnesses and therapy through increased self-efficacy because self-efficacy of cancer patients often experience reduction due to cancer and the therapy it undergoes. The pre&ndash;test and&nbsp; the first post -test and also&nbsp; the second post-test research design in the form of self-efficacy training of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy used&nbsp; a quasi-experimental design without a control group. Data analysis used dependent t test and repeat ANOVA test. There were significant effects and differences in self-efficacy training on the quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy with the&nbsp; p value dependent test was 0,000 and the repeat ANOVA test was p value 0,000. The uses of structured self-efficacy training be one of the considerations of nursing interventions to improve the quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND Women undergoing chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer have frequently reported unmet supportive care needs. Moreover, easily accessible and innovative support is lacking. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this trial was to determine the effectiveness of an app-based breast cancer e-support program to address women’s self-efficacy (primary outcome), social support, symptom distress, quality of life, anxiety, and depression. Secondary objectives included exploring the association between women’s health outcomes and the breast cancer e-support usage data. METHODS A multicenter, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial was conducted. A total of 114 women with breast cancer, who were commencing chemotherapy and were able to access internet through a mobile phone, were recruited in the clinics from 2 university-affiliated hospitals in China. Women were randomized either to the intervention group (n=57) receiving breast cancer e-support plus care as usual or the control group (n=57) receiving care as usual alone. The health care team and research assistants collecting data were blinded to the women’s group allocation. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory and the social exchange theory guided the development of the breast cancer e-support program, which has 4 components: (1) a Learning forum, (2) a Discussion forum, (3) an Ask-the-Expert forum, and (4) a Personal Stories forum. Moderated by an experienced health care professional, the breast cancer e-support program supported women for 12 weeks covering 4 cycles of chemotherapy. Health outcomes were self-assessed through paper questionnaires in clinics at baseline before randomization (T0), after 3 (T1), and 6 months (T2) of follow-ups. RESULTS Fifty-five participants in the intervention group and 49 in the control group completed the follow-up assessments (response rate: 91.2%). During the 12-week intervention, the log-in frequency ranged from 0 to 774 times (mean 54.7; SD 131.4; median 11; interquartile range, IQR 5-27), and the total usage duration ranged from 0 to 9371 min (mean 1072.3; SD 2359.5; median 100; IQR 27-279). Repeated measures multivariate analysis of covariance (intention-to-treat) found that breast cancer e-support + care as usual participants had significant better health outcomes at 3 months regarding self-efficacy (21.05; 95% CI 1.87-40.22; P=.03; d=0.53), symptom interference (−0.73; 95% CI −1.35 to −.11; P=.02; d=−0.51), and quality of life (6.64; 95% CI 0.77-12.50; P=.03, d=0.46) but not regarding social support, symptom severity, anxiety, and depression compared with care as usual participants. These beneficial effects were not sustained at 6 months. Spearman rank-order correlation showed that the breast cancer e-support usage duration was positively correlated with self-efficacy (r=.290, P=.03), social support (r=.320, P=.02), and quality of life (r=.273, P=.04) at 3 months. CONCLUSIONS The breast cancer e-support program demonstrated its potential as an effective and easily accessible intervention to promote women’s self-efficacy, symptom interference, and quality of life during chemotherapy. Abstract BACKGROUND: Bronchial asthma among children is a common chronic disease which may have impact on quality of life. Health education is one of the strategy to improve knowledge and quality of life.OBJECTIVE: The study aims to assess the effect of health education via mobile application (app) in promoting quality of life among schoolchildren with asthma in urban Malaysia during the COVID-19 era. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, pre- and post-intervention design was used in this study involving a total of 214 students, randomly assigned into two groups (intervention group and control group). The control group received face-to-face health education while the experimental group received health education via a mobile application.RESULTS: The findings showed that the total score of quality of life (QoL) has improved from a mean total score at pre-intervention (5.31±1.27) to post-intervention (5.66±1.28) for the control group, compared with the experimental group with a mean total score of QoL at pre-intervention (5.01±1.36) and post-intervention (5.85±1.29). A comparison between the experimental and control groups using an independent t-test showed statistically significant differences in their mean QoL scores. The effect of health education via mobile application showed a statistically significant improvement in the mean QoL score from pre- to post-intervention [F (1,288) = 57.46, p = <0.01].CONCLUSION: The use of mobile technology in health education improved QoL as compared to the traditional methods of face-to-face lecture and/or handbooks among schoolchildren with asthma. Thus, educational modules using mobile applications do improve QoL.
