Sax1 (previously CHox3) is a chicken homeobox gene belonging to the same homeobox gene family as the Drosophila NK1 and the honeybee HHO genes. Sax1 transcripts are present from stage 2 H&H until at least 5 days of embryonic development. However, specific localization of Sax1 transcripts could not be detected by in situ hybridization prior to stage 8-, when Sax1 transcripts are specifically localized in the neural plate, posterior to the hindbrain. From stages 8- to 15 H&H, Sax1 continues to be expressed only in the spinal part of the neural plate. The anterior border of Sax1 expression was found to be always in the transverse plane separating the youngest somite from the yet unsegmented mesodermal plate and to regress with similar dynamics to that of the segregation of the somites from the mesodermal plate. The posterior border of Sax1 expression coincides with the posterior end of the neural plate. In order to study a possible regulation of Sax1 expression by its neighboring tissues, several embryonic manipulation experiments were performed. These manipulations included: removal of somites, mesodermal plate or notochord and transplantation of a young ectopic notochord in the vicinity of the neural plate or transplantation of neural plate sections into the extraembryonic area. The results of these experiments revealed that the induction of the neural plate by the mesoderm has already occurred in full primitive streak embryos, after which Sax1 is autonomously regulated within the spinal part of the neural plate.

The parabolic-apex numerical back-analysis method (PNBM) was proposed to obtain such physical-mechanics parameters as Young's modulus and lateral pressure coefficient of surrounding rock by 3D FEM numerical analysis based on in-situ monitoring data. Taking Xiang-an Subsea Tunnel (located in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China) for example, adopting the PNBM using ABAQUS software, three dimensional elastic-plastic FEM-PNBM of tunnel surrounding rock was validated using in-situ monitoring data. The results show as follows: Using the PNBM, not only may high calculation precision be obtained, better meeting the demand of actual projects, but also more reasonable and reliable physical mechanics indices of surrounding rock such as Young's modulus and lateral confinement pressure coefficient, may be obtained. The applicability and the simplicity of this proposed method also support its usefulness.

The objective of this study was to develop cyanobacteria remote sensing models using Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) as an alternative to shipboard monitoring efforts in Lake Champlain. The approach allowed for estimation of cyanobacteria directly from satellite images, calibrated and validated with 4 years of in situ monitoring data from Lake Champlain's Long-Term Water Quality and Biological Monitoring Program (LTMP). The resulting stepwise regression model was applied to entire satellite images to provide distribution of cyanobacteria throughout the surface waters of Lake Champlain. The results demonstrate the utility of remote sensing for estimating the distribution of cyanobacteria in inland waters, which can be further used for presenting the initiation and propagation of cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Champlain.

Abstract. Measuring the ice flow motion accurately is essential to better understand the time evolution of glaciers and ice sheets, and therefore to better anticipate the future consequence of climate change in terms of sea-level rise. Although there exist a variety of remote sensing methods to fill this task, in-situ measurements are always needed for validation or to capture high temporal resolution movements. Yet glaciers are in general hostile environments where the installation of instruments might be tedious and risky when not impossible. Here we report the first-ever in-situ measurements of ice flow motion using a remotely controlled Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). We used a multicopter UAV to land on a highly crevassed area of Eqip Sermia Glacier, West Greenland, to measure the displacement of the glacial surface with the aid of an on-board differential GNSS receiver. Despite the unfortunate loss of the UAV, we measured approximately 70 cm of displacement over 4.36 hours without setting foot onto the glacier – a result validated by applying UAV photogrammetry and template matching techniques. Our study demonstrates that UAVs are promising instruments for in-situ monitoring, and have a great potential for capturing short-term ice flow variations in inaccessible glaciers – a task that remote sensing techniques can hardly achieve.

This article mainly expounds the importance of in-situ monitoring on the construction process of deep foundation pit. Taking the deep foundation pit of some Shenyang metro station for example, the deformation features of the supporting structure and the internal and external of foundation pit is analyzed, according to the monitoring data of the fender pile displacement during the excavation of deep foundation pit. The conclusion is obtained that the timely and accurate in-situ monitoring information is necessary to guaranteeing construction safety. We should pay more attention to the excavation speed and exert the interior support timely during the excavation of foundation pit to avoid large deformation and danger. The analytical results of monitoring data shows that the whole stage of foundation pit excavation is stable and the fender pile with internal supports can guarantee the stability of foundation pit.
