Acanthocephalan parasites collected from Austrian fishes: molecular barcoding and pathological observations

Acanthocephalan parasites were collected from the intestinal tracts of 137 predominantly wild fish (1 barbel Barbus barbus, 3 European chub Squalius cephalus, 13 rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and 120 brown trout Salmo trutta) from 12 localities. The condition factor, intensity of acanthocephalan infection and pathological lesions, if applicable, were documented. Routine bacteriology and virology were performed, and the brown trout were additionally tested for the presence of the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsolioides bryosalmonae by PCR. In total, 113 acanthocephalans were barcoded by sequencing a section of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Barcoding of the acanthocephalan tissues resulted in 77 sequences, of which 56 were assigned to Echinorhynchus truttae (3 genotypes), 11 to Pomphorhynchus tereticollis (9 genotypes), 9 to Acanthocephalus sp. (5 genotypes) and 1 to Neoechinorhynchida. Most of these genotypes were detected for the first time. Statistically, the acanthocephalan infection did not have an impact on the condition factor of the brown trout. Infection with P. tereticollis caused more severe pathological changes in the digestive tract than E. truttae. The present study provides new data regarding the distribution of acanthocephalan species in Austria and their impact on individual fish. In addition, new barcoding data from acanthocephalan parasites are presented, and the occurrence of P. tereticollis in European chub in Austria and in brown and rainbow trout in general was confirmed for the first time.

This study aims to determine the reproductive indices of three types of salmon fish: brown trout (Salmo trutta morfa fario Linnaeus (1758), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis Mitchill, 1814) in aquaculture. For this purpose, 10 females and 10 males of each species were selected on an analogous basis and the main fishery-exteriors and reproductive characteristics were identified. The researching of relative fertility permit to establish that this indicator in brook trout females was 18.36% higher compared to rainbow trout, however, by 7.5% lower compared to the brown trout. It was found that brook trout eggs had less weight and size in comparison with other studied species. In particular, the weight and diameter of the eggs were 2.89 and 9.7% respectively lower than of rainbow trout, as well as 8.1 and 3.44% respectively lower compared to the brown trout. When studying the quantity of ejaculate, it was found that on average, brook trout males had 16.95% less of ejaculates compared to rainbow trout males, but 79.6% more than of brown trout males. When comparing the main indices of the brooders body of the studied species, it was found that the condition factor of the brook trout and rainbow trout females was quite high at 1.55–1.57, the brown trout one was 1.35, and the profile index respectively was 3.5, 3.52 and 4.0. The males' condition factor of brook trout, rainbow trout and brown trout was respectively 1.64, 1.52 and 1.35. Fishery-exteriors indicators met the requirements of brooders species and age specificity norms of the studied fish species.

This paper presents the data related to morphometric and physiological (hematological) characteristics of brown trout (Salmo trutta) from the Ponor River. This river rises near the village Podrašnica (municipality of Mrkonjić Grad), sinks above the ground and after a while, near the settlement of Krupa na Vrbasu, appears as a source of the Krupa River (tributary of the Vrbas River). Fish sampling was performed during the summer of 2015 and during this period 22 Salmo trutta units were caught (11 females and 11 males). On that occasion, several morphometric (total and standard body length) and hematological traits (Hct-hematocrit, Hb-hemoglobin and MCHC - mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration), body mass and Fulton’s condition factor were analyzed. The average value for total body length was 18.85 cm and for standard body length it was 16.85 cm; the mean value for body mass was 80.38 g, and for Fulton’s condition factor 1.41. In case of hematological parameters, the average value for Hct was 0.39 l/l, Hb 70.62 g/l and MCHC 180.64 g/l erythrocytes. The estimated parameters can serve as indicators for the condition of these aquatic organisms, and indirectly, the state of their environment.
