Eristalis tecta sp. n. is described, based on material from the Macedonian Museum of Natural History (Skopje, Macedonia, former Republic of Yugoslavia). This species is closely related to E. interrupta (Poda, 1761). Diagnostic characters of the species, together with figures of the male terminalia, are given. A checklist ofthe Eristalis species known from the Balkan Peninsula is presented.

AbstractThis paper describes two related species of the subgenus Paragus (Paragus) Latreille 1804 from two remote regions. The study of material from the Bohart Museum (Davis, California, United States) resulted in the discovery of an undescribed Nearctic species, P. vockerothi sp.nov. Simultaneously, one similar new European species, P. glumaci sp.nov., is reported among material collected from the Balkan Peninsula. The description of both species, with figures of male genitalia and diagnostic characters, is given. The zoogeographical significance of the discovery of these species is emphasized.

The endemic Australian ruteline genus Mesystoechus Waterhouse, 1878 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anoplognathini: Schizognathina) is revised and compared with Amblochilus Blanchard, 1851 and Bilobatus Machatschke, 1970. Mesystoechus lithgowae new species is described from inland southeastern Queensland. Diagnostic characters and information on the distribution, natural history, and ecology of the two previously described species (M. ciliatus Waterhouse, 1878 and M. costatus Carne, 1958) and a description of the female of M. costatus are given. A key to males of the genus is proposed. Lectotypes are designated for Amblochilus bicolor Blanchard, 1851, Mesystoechus ciliatus Waterhouse, 1878, Homotropus luridipennis Waterhouse, 1878 (now Bilobatus luridipennis), and Homotropus testaceipennis Ohaus, 1901 (now Bilobatus testaceipennis), and their distributions are clarified.

Abstract Poa jubata A. Kern., an annual South-eastern European species, is reported for the first time from Italy. It is a therophyte linked to temporary ponds with soils flooded during the winter period. It is a very rare and enigmatic species, currently known only from a few localities of the Balkan Peninsula. Recently, it was surveyed in an Apulian wetland, near Brindisi, where it grows with several other annual hygrophytes. For its taxonomical isolation, it is included in a monospecific section, as P. sect. Jubatae. In addition to a detailed description, the chromo-some complement (2n = 14) of this species is examined for the first time and a new iconography is provided.

In the tenthredinid hymenopteran genus Empria, the European species with a paired whitish patch on tergum 1 are considered tentatively as a species-group termed the E. hungarica group. The type materials of Empria pumila (Konow), E. pumiloides Lindqvist and E. tricornis Lindqvist were examined. The lectotype and paralectotypes of E. pumila are designated, and new diagnostic characters for E. pumila and E. pumiloides are given. A key for the Northern European species of the E. hungarica group is compiled. The results of a comparison of the phenology and some metrical characters of the adults of E. pumila and E. pumiloides are presented in the form of diagrams. E. pumiloides is recorded for the first time from Russia and Germany. The records of E. hungarica from Estonia (Saaremaa) are reported as the northernmost for that species. All available distributional records of Empria hungarica in the Palaearctic are given in the text, and those localized reliably are also mapped.

Two species and one subspecies of Roncus L. Koch, 1873, new to science (R. tintilin n. sp., R. trojan n. sp., and R. trojan strahor n. ssp.), collected in eastern and southeastern Serbia, Yugoslavia, are described, diagnostic characters are illustrated, and their distribution is given.

Limnephilus minos Malicky 1970 is a micro-endemic caddisfly restricted to the Greek island of Crete. Mesophylax impunctatus aduncus (Navás 1923) is known from Turkey and the southern Balkan peninsula; Greek records range from islands close to the mainland and Skiros to the northern mainland, and Attica. This paper describes the previously unknown larvae of both taxa. Information on the morphology of the 5th larval instar of each taxon is given, and the most important diagnostic characters are illustrated. A discriminatory matrix for the Greek limnephilid larvae with multifilament gills is also provided. In the context of existing identification keys, the larva of L. minos belongs to the group of Limnephilini larvae where face setae are lacking on the mid- and/or hind femora; the species keys together with L. auricula Curtis 1834 and can be separated from the latter species by setae present between the primary setae on the distal section of mid- and hind trochanters. In contrast, face setae are present on the mid- and/or hind femora in M. impunctatus aduncus. Its larva can be easily identified by the fact that 3 or more ventral-edge setae are present on the midfemur, by setae present on both sides of the anal slit, and by its grazer-type mandible lacking terminal teeth.

AbstractExamination of 122 specimens ofXanthogrammaSchiner, 1861 (Diptera: Syrphidae) from varied localities in Europe (+Turkey) resulted in the description of two new species (X. aeginaeRicarte, Nedeljković, and Vujićnew speciesandX. pilosumNedeljković, Ricarte, and Vujićnew species), as well as new data on six other species. Most of the examined material originated from the Balkan Peninsula and Greek islands. New species concepts were supported by morphological and molecular evidence. Relationships among the eight studied species were analysed and discussed based on the data of nuclear (ITS2) and mitochondrial (COI) genes sequences. An identification key to the European species ofXanthogrammais provided. The luteitarsis species group of the aphidophagous genus Pipiza Fallén is defined as a monophyletic unit and the European species of this group are revised. Based on material from Serbia found at two lowland localities, P. luteibarba n. sp. is described. This species is closely related to P. luteitarsis Zetterstedt and P. accola Violovitsh. A key for the West Palaearctic species of the Pipiza luteitarsis species group is provided and records of all species from the Balkan Peninsula are presented. The distribution of the new species is discussed and conservation implications considered.

AbstractA revision of the European species of Siphona Meigen (1803) is presented. New diagnostic characters, especially based on structural differences in the male and female genitalia, are introduced. Also the traditionally used characters are revised. Four species are described as new: ingerae, mesnili and variutu from Denmark, and martini from Sweden. Thirteen other species are diagnosed. All seventeen species are keyed, and details of the genitalia are illustrated. Two lectotypes are designated. Notes on the affinities and distribution of the species are given. The biology is reviewed and possible host-parasite relationships are presented in an annotated list. True aerial swarming (synorchesia) of male Tachinidae is reported for the first time.

A review of 29 European species of the genus Phyllonorycter Hübner, 1822 developing on the plants of the tribe Genisteae with diagnostic characters, brief data on their biology and distribution is given. Twelve of them are new: Phyllonorycter estrela sp. n., probably from Genista cinerea (Vill.) DC., P. telinella sp. n. from Genista monspessulana (L.) L. A. S. Johnson, P. tridentatae sp. n. from Genista tridentata L., P. deschkanus sp. n. from Genista cinerea (Vill.) DC., P. andalusicus sp. n. probably from Retama sphaerocarpa (L.) Boiss., P. echinosparti sp. n. from Echinospartum lusitanicum (L.) Rothm., P. baetica sp. n. from Genista versicolor Boiss., P. vueltas sp. n. from Genista florida L. and G. cinerea (Vill.) DC., P. scorpius sp. n. from Genista scorpius (L.) DC., P. pumila sp. n. from Genista versicolor subsp. pumila (Hervier) Fern. Casas, P. eugregori sp. n. from Cytisus austriacus L. and C. ratisbonensis Schaeff., and P. etnensis sp. n. from Genista aetnensis (Biv.) DC. Phyllonorycter purgantella (Chrétien, 1915) is recognized as bona species. Phyllonorycter dalmatinella (Amsel, 1951) and P. picardi Buvat, 1995 are junior subjective synonyms of Phyllonorycter lapadiella (Krone, 1909). The lectotype of Phyllonorycter haasi (Rebel, 1901) is designated. The species are divided into three species groups, Phyllonorycter cerasinella (Reutti, 1853) standing apart from these groups. New country records of several species are given.
