An isolated population of Chloclystis v-ata (Haworth, 1809), occurring at Karkali Peninsula, a nature reserve in southwestern Finland, is described as a new subspecies, ssp. relicta ssp.n., on the basis of differences in appearence and phenology compared to the nominate subspecies. The Central European population of Ch. v-ata has been expanding to the north, reaching the Baltic Sea area in recent decades and Finland in 1985. Thus, the new subspecies which is actually protected by law is now threatened by hybridization with the nominate subspecies. In contrast to the bivoltine nominate subspecies, the Karkali population is univoltine. The biology of the new subspecies is discussed.

Ports are complex systems that have an essential role in the transportation of freight and indisputable importance for economies worldwide. Port operation requires many resources, and their performance depends on various factors. This paper focuses on the Port of Koper in the Adriatic Sea, and the Port of Gdansk in the Baltic Sea. Two ports located in two very different countries, yet with similar recent history, are connected by the Baltic-Adriatic corridor. The authors have compared the recent development of these ports through the analysis of five elements, and determined that better strategic measures have been taken in the Port of Gdansk, resulting in the faster development of the port and the opportunity to further improve its performance by strengthening its position on the Central European markets. Koper could learn how to further stabilize its position in the North Adriatic region from the model employed by the Port of Gdansk. Reorganization is required to make Koper more competitive and capable of attracting fresh money. Also, the state should be much more supportive of the Port of Koper.

<p>A detailed assessment of climate variability of the Baltic Sea area for the period 1958-2008 (Lehmann et al. 2011) revealed that changes in the warming trend since the mid-1980s, were associated with changes in the large-scale atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic. The analysis of winter sea level pressure (SLP) data highlighted considerable changes in intensification and location of storm tracks, in parallel with the eastward shift of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) centres of action. Additionally, a seasonal shift of strong wind events from autumn to winter and early spring exists for the Baltic area. Lehmann et al. (2002) showed that different atmospheric circulation regimes force different circulation patterns in the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, as atmospheric circulation, to a large extent, controls patterns of water circulation and biophysical aspects relevant for biological production, such as the vertical distribution of temperature and salinity, alterations in weather regimes may severely impact the trophic structure and functioning of marine food webs (Hinrichsen et al. 2007). To understand the processes linking changes in the marine environment and climate variability, it is essential to investigate all components of the climate system which of course include also the large-scale atmospheric circulation. Now, since extended time series data (1948-2018) for additional 20 years are available, it is interesting to investigate recent changes/shifts of the large-scale atmospheric conditions and their impact on the wind climate over the Baltic Sea area.</p>

Statistical data on reserves, production and exports of Russian oil are provided in the article. The author pays special attention to the expansion of opportunities of sea oil transportation by construction of new oil terminals in the North-West of the country and first of all the largest terminal in Murmansk. In his opinion, one of the main problems in this sphere is prevention of ecological accidents in the process of oil transportation through the Baltic sea ports.

The study of paleogeography of lakes is an actual and important direction in modern science. As part of the study of lakes in the North-West of the Karelian Isthmus, this analysis will establish the dynamics of salinity of objects, which will allow to reconstruct changes in the level of the Baltic Sea in the Holocene.
