IntroductionSimulation has become an established method for education and training of Emergency Medical Services personnel in different skills such as advanced airway techniques, also in evaluation and initial care of stroke patients and in pre-hospital trauma. Simulation can be a useful method to improve learning. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of simulation on the clinical competence in a pre-hospital trauma care course for ambulance nurses.MethodsThe study was performed using a before-after design. Seventeen ambulance nurse students who participated in a trauma care course were evaluated in two simulated trauma cases. All subjects had passed the initial theoretical part of the course. The pre-test was performed in the beginning of the following part of the course involving simulation and the post-test at the end of the course. The analysis was performed by assessment of performance, as seen on video-tapes from the pre-tests and the post-tests. A validated instrument was used to determine the level of student’s clinical competence. Paired t-test was used to confirm differences between the pre-test and post-test results.ResultsThere was a significant increase in the over-all results for the post-test, with a difference of 1.12 points (t=4.642, df=16, p=0.001) Situation Awareness, Patient Assessment and Decision Making showed the most pronounced improvements.ConclusionThe results imply that simulation in addition to traditional theoretical education improves the clinical competence of the students, in comparison to traditional education and training without any significant amount of simulation.

Mental health clinicians invest in many years of hard work to develop their clinical competence through graduate coursework and through supervised clinical experiences. All this is done with the ultimate goal of becoming independently licensed to practice in one’s profession. Because licensure is such an important event, signifying the culmination of so much education and training, it may be natural to believe that becoming licensed means that one is now clinically competent. This chapter addresses how clinical competence and licensure should be viewed and understood. Licensure assesses one’s competence to enter the profession, but it cannot guarantee competence in all areas of clinical practice at the time of licensure or in the future. How to maintain, update, and expand one’s competence over time is addressed. Risks and threats to competence are discussed, and recommendations are provided for ensuring one’s ongoing competence over time.

Covid-19 pandemic has raised several problems faced by students including declining motivation to learn, lack of time to do independent assignments, and reduced amount of pocket money given by parents. This community service (CS) was designed to assist students in overcoming these problems through online education and training activities to increase students’ learning motivation and increase literacy on time management and pocket money management. Partners in this CS activity were 53 students of Strada Bhakti Utama Junior High School. The method of implementing activities used are counselling, exercises, and questions and answers. The success rate of this CS program was measured from analysis of the pre-test and post-test results conducted before and after the activity as well as from assessment of students' accuracy in answering online quiz questions. Based on results of pre-test and post-test analysis, CS activities through education and training on learning motivation, time management, and pocket money management were proven to be able to increase students' understanding of the importance of managing pocket money, saving, managing time, motivation, and source of motivators in life. In addition, based on the results of online quiz assessments, most students could answer correctly the questions about the material presented.

Introduction: Medical and para-medical education is one of the key points of healthcare strategy. Training and education based on high-fidelity simulation is one of the gold standards in modern healthcare institutions. We describe a model of training dedicated to ICU nurses in charge of patients with ECMO. The aim of our educational tool was to teach ICU nurses ECMO basic knowledge and skills. Methods: An ECMO Specialist Course Committee implemented the training programme. It was on two consecutive days and consisted of theoretical, practical and high-fidelity, simulation-based teaching. A content expert implemented each scenario and learning objectives were defined. Participants were assessed pre- and post-test (Group 1 and Group 2). Results: In two years, seven sessions took place and 40 volunteers were enrolled. High-fidelity, simulation-based teaching consisted of seven scenarios. There was a significant improvement in mean score between pre- and post-test. Moreover, we noticed that the basic level (pre-test) of participants was improving over the time. The mean pre-test scores of Group 2 were significantly higher than Group1. Conclusion: The implementation of education and training course for ICU nurses in charge of patients on ECMO is feasible and reliable. It improves nurse personal levels, but also shares in improving the global level of the team to which they belong.

Developing technology has significantly affected the education and training process as it is in all areas of life. In today’s society, smart phones, tablets and computers which almost every individual owns have facilitated access to information, and besides classical teaching methods, technology-supported or technology-based education activities have also become a part of the process. E-learning tools are important tools by which technology is included in the education and training process. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic which has been experienced around the world since the beginning of 2020 has revealed the importance of e-learning materials more. The aim of this study, carried out in the light of the information given above, is to develop, apply and evaluate Adobe Captivate, one of the most used e-learning software worldwide, for use in the French teaching process. The study was carried out in an experimental model. The universe of the study consisted of 53 French preparatory class students. The achievement test developed by the researcher was used as the data collection tool of the research. The data obtained as a result of the pre-test and post-test applications showed that the use of Adobe Captivate positively affected the general language competency of the students.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of mobile virtual practice and present a new training method to improve the ability of 119 paramedics to triage in the event of multiple casualties. A total of 24 of the 119 paramedics were selected as subjects, and the experiment was conducted by classifying 12 and 12 into mobile virtual practice and lecture explanation groups, respectively. Both groups performed triage evaluations before and after education and practice, and additional questionnaires were completed for mobile virtual practice. Both groups of virtual practice and course description showed significant differences between pre-assessment and post-assessment. In the control group (lecture), the accuracy (29.16) increased from 49.17 ± 18.32 in the pre-test to 78.33 ± 16.42 in the post-test (p = .001). In the experimental group (virtual practice), the accuracy (24.2) increased from 60.0 ± 23.7 in the pre-test to 84.2±13.8 in the post-test (p = .004). If face-to-face education and training are not possible, mobile virtual practice should be considered. Moreover, various educational programs that are engaging and effective are needed.

ABSTRACT Objectives: The Radiation Injury Treatment Network (RITN) is prepared to respond to a national disaster resulting in mass casualties with marrow toxic injuries. How effective existing RITN workforce education and training is, or whether health-care providers (HCPs) at these centers possess the knowledge and skills to care for patients following a radiation emergency is unclear. HCP knowledge regarding the medical effects and medical management of radiation-exposed patients, along with clinical competence and willingness to care for patients following a radiation emergency was assessed. Methods: An online survey was conducted to assess level of knowledge regarding the medical effects of radiation, medical/nursing management of patients, self-perception of clinical competence, and willingness to respond to radiation emergencies and nuclear events. Results: Attendance at previous radiation emergency management courses and overall knowledge scores were low for all respondents. The majority indicated they were willing to respond to a radiation event, but few believed they were clinically competent to do so. Conclusions: Despite willingness to respond, HCPs at RITN centers may not possess adequate knowledge of medical management of radiation patients, and appropriate response actions during a radiation emergency. RITN should increase the awareness of the importance of radiation education and training.

Numerous studies had conducted the use of mind mapping as a technique in teaching and learning English, but relatively few of these studies focused on the effectiveness and students’ perceptions of mind mapping technique in learning tenses on elementary level in a non-formal education institution. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mind mapping technique in learning present tenses and students’ perceptions toward this technique on elementary level students of the English program. 30 students of the English program on elementary level at Aliah Education and Training Institute Makassar took part in the study. Data were collected through pre-test, post-test, observation, questionnaire, and interview and thus used to analyze the results quantitatively and qualitatively using preliminary studies, general mean scores, and percentages of students‘ improvement score. Results of the study showed that the students were really enthusiastic to learn with this technique and the atmosphere of the classroom was more enjoyable. In addition, the students’ ability in using tenses was improved after implementing this technique. In the pre-test, the general mean score of the students was 42.33 and classified as Very Poor. While, the general mean score of the students was 78.92 and classified as Good in the post-test. The students‘ improvement score was increased up to 86.44%. It revealed that mind mapping technique is effective in learning tenses. However, it is suggested that further studies can be conducted with larger data to make it more accurate and applicable.
