On 22 February 2018 landslide occurred in Pasir Panjang Village, Salem District, Brebes Regency of Central Java Province, Indonesia. About 8 people were died, 4 people were injured and several infrastructures were damaged due to this landslide. This research is carried out to understand geological-geotechnical condition and to study the initiation mechanism of the landslide. Field investigation and UAV mapping are carried out to detect slip surface and define slope geometry. The rainfall-induced pore-water pressure is estimated by using the Slope Infiltration Distributed Equilibrium (SLIDE) model. Then, limit equilibrium method is used to estimate the safety factor of the slope, while the shear strength parameters are determined by applying back analysis approach that compared with data from laboratory tests. The results show that landslide occurred in permeable layer of silty sand overlaid above impermeable andesitic breccia. Results from back analysis indicate that the shear strength parameters and rainfall intensity are strongly influence the stability of slope against landslide.

The Stability

The cohesion c and friction angle φ are the main strength parameters influencing the stability of slope. Any of them changes, the factor of safety of slope will change, but it has seldom been considered in the literature how the potential slip surface will change at the same time. In the present paper, the analytical deduction and numerical analysis are done to find out the effect of shear strength parameters c and φ to the distribution of potential slip surface. The study shows that, the potential slip surface is affected by the combination of c and φ, whose function is λ=c/(γhtanφ).

Analysis and assessment of the slopes stability are an important in geotechnical engineering for all the times. The paper deals with the assessment of slope stability in fine-grained soils. The influence of change in shear strength parameters on the factor of safety has been studied. The factor of safety can be correctly obtained only if the critical failure surface of the slope is accurately identified and shear strength parameters are correctly. To investigate effect of soil strength parameters on the factor of safety, different values of shear strength parameters: cohesion (c), internal friction angle (ϕ), were chosen. The calculation and assessment of slope stability was made using methods which assume a circular shape of the slip surface (Bishop and Petterson method) and methods that consider the polygonal shape of the slip surface (Spencer and Janbu method). We analyzed the impact of shear strength parameters of the resulting factor of slope stability of fine grained soil. The results of the study showed that the factor of safety of the slope changes with varying cohesion c and internal friction angle ϕ.
