The quality of a machined surface can be described by macro and micro parameters, like the size error, the form and position error or the surface roughness. The task of machining process planning is to find the best machining method and parameters, which ensure the required quality. In this article, the surface roughness in the case of turning and milling technologies is analysed. The effect of the cutting parameters (feed at turning and depth of cut at milling) and the tool parameter (corner radius) are investigated. The results are compared with the theoretical geometric model of surface roughness. In longitudinal turning as well as in constant Z-level milling, the geometric model of surface roughness is similar. The article presents whether the real surface roughness is similar too.

This research studied the influence of cutting fluids and cutting parameters on the surface roughness for stainless steel worked by turning machine in dry and wet cutting cases. The work was done with different cutting speeds, and feed rates with a fixed depth of cutting. During the machining process, heat was generated and effects of higher surface roughness of work material. In this study, the effects of some cutting fluids, and dry cutting on surface roughness have been examined in turning of AISI316 stainless steel material. Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES) instead of other soluble oils has been used and compared to dry machining processes. Experiments have been performed at four cutting speeds (60, 95, 155, 240) m/min, feed rates (0.065, 0.08, 0.096, 0.114) mm/rev. and constant depth of cut (0.5) mm. The amount of decrease in Ra after the used suggested mixture arrived at (0.21µm), while Ra exceeded (1µm) in case of soluble oils This means the suggested mixture gave the best results of lubricating properties than other cases.

In any type of machining process the surface roughness plays an important role. In these the product is judge on the basis of their (surface roughness) surface finish. In machining process there are four main cutting parameter i.e. cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, spindle speed. For obtaining good surface finish, we can use the hot turning process. In hot turning process we heat the workpiece material and perform turning process multiple time and obtain the reading. The taguchi method is design to perform an experiment and L18 experiment were performed. The result is analyzed by using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method. The result Obtain by this method may be useful for many other researchers.

This work performed molecular dynamic simulations to study the 2D profile and 3D surface topography in the nanometric cutting process. The least square mean method was used to model the evaluation criteria for the surface roughness at the nanometric scale. The result showed that the cutting speed was the most important factor influencing the spacing between the peaks, the sharpness of the peaks, and the randomness of the profile. The plastic deformation degree of the machined surface at the nanometric scale was significantly influenced by the cutting speed and depth of cut. The 2D and 3D surface roughness parameters exhibited a similar variation tendency, and the parameters Ra and Rq tended to increase gradually with an increase in the cutting speed and a decrease in the depth of cut. Finally, it is concluded that at the nanometric scale, the 3D surface roughness parameters could more accurately reflect the real surface characteristics than the 2D parameters.

Surface roughness is among the key indicators describing the quality of machined surfaces. Although it is an aggregate of several factors, the condition of the surface is largely determined by the type of tool and the operational parameters of machining. This study sought to examine the effect that particular machining parameters have on the quality of the surface. The investigated operation was the high-speed dry milling of a magnesium alloy with a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) cutting tool dedicated for light metal applications. Magnesium alloys have low density, and thus are commonly used in the aerospace or automotive industries. The state of the Mg surfaces was assessed using the 2D surface roughness parameters, measured on the lateral and the end face of the specimens, and the end-face 3D area roughness parameters. The description of the surfaces was complemented with the surface topography maps and the Abbott–Firestone curves of the specimens. Most 2D roughness parameters were to a limited extent affected by the changes in the cutting speed and the axial depth of cut, therefore, the results from the measurements were subjected to statistical analysis. From the data comparison, it emerged that PCD-tipped tools are resilient to changes in the cutting parameters and produce a high-quality surface finish.

The use of hybrid composite materials has increased due to their special mechanical and physical properties. However, machining of these materials is extremely difficult due to non-homogeneous, anisotropic and highly abrasive characteristics. The performance of machined surface quality of CFRP/Al2024 was described using two level factorial methodology. This research aims to study the interaction effects and significant factors of cutting parameters on the surface quality and optimise the cutting parameter for the surface quality of CFRP/Al2024 1μm to 2μm. The trimming process test was performed under dry conditions using burr tools 6mm diameter of end mills. The factors investigated were spindle speed (N), feed rate (fr) and depth of cut (dc), meanwhile profile roughness parameters (Ra) of CFRP and Al2024 were the response variables. Results show that the best estimated value of fr should be 500 mm/min to 530 mm/min, N is between and 2313.870 rpm to 2336.042 rpm. For both responses, N is the most significant effect followed by fr and dc.

Surface roughness is one of the most significant parameters to determine quality of machined parts. Surface roughness is defined as a group of irregular waves in the surface, measured in micrometers (μm). Many investigations have been performed to verify the relationship between surface roughness and cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. To predict the surface produced by end milling, surface roughness models have been developed in this paper using the machining forces by assuming the end mill cutter as a cantilever beam rigidly or semi- rigidly supported by tool holder. An Aluminium workpiece and solid carbide end mill tools are used in this work. Model to predict surface roughness has been developed. Close relationship between machined surface roughness and roughness predicted using the measured forces signals.

In order to control the temperature during milling process of aluminum alloys and keeping as minimum as possible, the choice of the cutting parameters and their optimization is very important, both for the tool wear but also for the surface quality of machined surface. The main purpose of this paper is to find the optimum values of the milling parameters (rotational speed and depth of cut) so that the minimum value for the temperature to be obtained. Using adequate experimental conditions with contact measurements techniques (thermocouple K-type) carried out on the some types of aluminum alloys and the appropriate statistical instruments, the most influencing cutting parameters and their values on the cutting temperature can be found. The results are presented both analytical and graphical.

The paper investigates the effects of cutting conditions on the machinability of stainless steel coatings manufactured onto AISI 1045 steel by laser cladding technology. Two kinds of CBN (cubic boron nitride) tools with different corner radius and two different depths of cut were adopted in the experiments. Cutting force during machining, surface roughness and microhardness of machined surface were measured and analyzed. The results show that both the cutting force and surface roughness increase with the increase of depth of cut. When the other cutting parameters are identical, the surface roughness decreases with the increase of tools corner radius while the variations of different cutting force components present different tendencies. The microhardness of the machined surface and its varied gradient in the direction of depth of cut increase with the increase of tools corner radius. The experiment results will provide valuable suggestions for optimization of cutting performance for laser cladding coatings in order to obtain excellent surface quality.

The high speed milling of silicon carbide was discussed by using flat end-mill 2 mm in diameter diamond coated tool. Ultra-precision high speed spindle attachment was used to achieve cutting tool rotation speed as high as 50,000 rpm. Special fixture was designed to minimize the chatter on work-piece surface during the machining process. Three cutting parameters were selected as independent variables of the experiments. They were spindle speed, depth of cut and feed rate. The arithmetic mean value of roughness (Ra) was measured on the work-piece surface as the response of the experiment. Result of the experiment shows that the value of surface roughness can be achieved as low as 0.150 μm. Statistical analysis was provided to study the significant of the model, interaction among the cutting parameters and their effects to the surface roughness value.
