The formulas obtained for distributions of both shear forces and overturning moments are simple, computationally effective and useful for the preliminary design of dams. They show clearly the separate and combined effects of compressibility and viscosity of water. They also have the advantage of being able to cover a wide range of excitation frequencies even beyond the cut-off frequencies of the natural modes of the reservoir. Key results obtained using the proposed analytical expressions of the hydrodynamic forces are validated using numerical and experimental solutions published for some particular cases available in the specialized literature.

The study is devoted to the mathematical description of the process of oil outflow in places of leakage of the tubing string, which allows a computer to locate a leakage in the tubing. The authors propose methodology for identifying defects in the tubing and determining the location of the leak. The uniqueness of this methodology lies in quick determination of the place of leakage without the use of specialists, sophisticated and specialized equipment. Mathematical modeling of oil flow in the tubing requires the apparatus of continuum mechanics. It is a general belief that the movement of oil in the pipe flows at low speeds due to its outflow from the hole. Using the general equations of mass and energy balance, the authors have obtained differential equations of fluid motion in a vertical pipe in the process of its outflow from the tubing and in the process of injection. Analytical expressions are the solution to these equations, as they can help in estimating the degree of damage and its location, as well as the feasibility of its eliminating. The results show that an increase in the leakage and injection times leads to improving accuracy of locating damage. Thus, when conducting various geological and technical measures (GTM) at the well, it is possible to assess the presence of leakage and its intensity when deciding on the repair of tubing.

The relationship between the relative fluorescence signal excited and collected with a double-fiber optic sensor and the sample depth has been investigated. The complexity of the analytical expressions for the relative fluorescence signal and the effective depth was reduced by deriving a set of semi-empirical equations which can be evaluated in a simple fashion. These expressions take into account the configuration of the sensor, i.e., fiber diameter, acceptance angle, and separation between fibers. The expressions were tested with the use of double-fiber sensors with different diameters and separations between fibers. The reduction of the effective depth in solutions with significant absorbance was evaluated.

The free vibration of cylindrical shells filled with a compressible viscous fluid has been studied by numerous workers using the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, the fluid continuity equation, and Flu¨gge ’s equations of motion for thin shells. It happens that solutions can be obtained for which the interface conditions at the shell surface are satisfied. Formally, a characteristic equation for the system eigenvalues can be written down, and solutions are usually obtained numerically providing some insight into the physical mechanisms. In this paper, we modify the usual approach to this problem, use a more rigorous mathematical solution and limit the discussion to a single thin shell of infinite length and finite radius, totally filled with a viscous, compressible fluid. It is shown that separable solutions are obtained only in a particular gage, defined by the divergence of the fluid velocity vector potential, and the solutions are unique to that gage. The complex frequency dependence for the transverse component of the fluid velocity field is shown to be a result of surface interaction between the compressional and vortex motions in the fluid and that this motion is confined to the boundary layer near the surface. Numerical results are obtained for the first few wave modes of a large shell, which illustrate the general approach to the solution. The axial wave number is complex for wave propagation, the imaginary part being the spatial attenuation coefficient. The frequency is also complex, the imaginary part of which is the temporal damping coefficient. The wave phase velocity is related to the real part of the axial wave number and turns out to be independent of frequency, with numerical value lying between the sonic velocities in the fluid and the shell. The frequency dependencies of these parameters and fluid velocity field mode shapes are computed for a typical case and displayed in non-dimensional graphs.

Abstract In this paper, an algorithm for the determination of the singularity loci of spherical three-degree-of-freedom parallel manipulators with prismatic atuators is presented. These singularity loci, which are obtained as curves or surfaces in the Cartesian space, are of great interest in the context of kinematic design. Indeed, it has been shown elsewhere that parallel manipulators lead to a special type of singularity which is located inside the Cartesian workspace and for which the end-effector becomes uncontrollable. It is therfore important to be able to identify the configurations associated with theses singularities. The algorithm presented is based on analytical expressions of the determinant of a Jacobian matrix, a quantity that is known to vanish in the singular configurations. A general spherical three-degree-of-freedom parallel manipulator with prismatic actuators is first studied. Then, several particular designs are investigated. For each case, an analytical expression of the singularity locus is derived. A graphical representation in the Cartesian space is then obtained.
