For the development of a comprehensive explanative model on the genesis and use of the history of a historic building, an exclusively visual and aesthetic approach is not sufficient. In addition to the function, the construction is also shown as a peer design factor in the planning, architectural and artistic development. In this context, the task of the technical universities and colleges is to provide students with a far-reaching expertise in historical building construction. To achieve this goal, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE), in the context of a research programme, has taken a targeted initiative. For this purpose, a large number of historical architectural drawings were combined in a plan collection at the Department and made available for further research. With regard to the structural importance of these drawings, a systematic scientific research has been carried out. This study was supported by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office - grant No. 112906.

During the survey campaign of the TOVIVA research project “Torres de vigía y defensa del litoral valenciano. Generación de metadatos y modelos 3D para su interpretación y efectiva puesta en valor,” many of these towers have been digitally surveyed using 3D laser scanner, and terrestrial and aerial photogrammetry. The survey campaign took place in April 2015 and after gathering the data, a phase of elaboration has successfully produced the architectural drawings of plans, elevations and sections. A part of this documentation has been collected on the poster "When an isolated building becomes a guideline for the urban pattern. The case of “Torrenostra” in Torreblanca, Castellón, Spain", by T. G. Piqueras S. Giraudeau and A. Leonardi in 2015. In this case we want to present an evolution of the work, aiming to reconstruct the original landscape around it. Although today the tower is surrounded by other buildings on both sides, the situation was different in the past, when the tower was isolated on the coast. Rediscovering the original landscape of the city could be a topic of interest and discussion in the Museum of the Territory of Torreblanca. This could take place inside the tower and explain to visitors the history of the territory and its evolution, involving the structure of the tower itself, changing its shape and value. The 3D reconstruction, both digital and tangible, is also a good way to involve children and adults alike, adding a special value to a historical building.

Cathedrals are buildings of cultural weight. They have frequently drawn attention from architectural historians, especially in the medieval era, as examples of Great Churches: leaders in artistic development or pioneers in engineering technology. When one thinks of Gothic buildings in <?page nr="300"?>particular, it is the cathedral that comes foremost to mind as example. Salisbury, Canterbury, York, and their fellows continue to draw both scholarly attention and popular attraction.

Abstract. In this survey we present studies on mortar mixes added with oxblood, which was a commonly found local waste material, with a wide application and long history of use; a precise recipe of lime–pozzolan mortar with blood addition from a 19th-century Italian manual was chosen, and model samples were prepared accordingly, with the aim of better understanding the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of such compositions, starting with a blank reference specimen. The specimens were analysed by means of scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction, and the results suggested that amorphous calcium carbonate could be formed in the specimens with oxblood addition. These preliminary results allow a better understanding of historical building practices, measuring effects induced by organic additives on mortar microstructure, as well as an evaluation of new performances obtained in mortar mixes. Moreover, this paper intends to propose a full multi-discipline approach to bridge the history of architecture and building materials to conservation science.

This edition presents and contextualizes an archive of letters -- belonging to the Wordsworth Trust -- that reveal the creative and personal significance of the friendship between William Wordsworth and Sir George Beaumont. Beaumont is a key figure in the history of British Art. As well as being a respected amateur landscape painter, he was a prominent patron, collector, and co-founder of the National Gallery. Wordsworth described Beaumont’s friendship as one of the chief blessings of his life, and the letters reveal that the two men became collaborators as well as companions. In addition to documenting unique perspectives on social, political, and cultural events of the early nineteenth century (providing new contexts for reading Wordsworth’s mature poetry) the letters chart the progress of an increasingly intimate inter-familial relationship that included Lady Beaumont and Dorothy and Mary Wordsworth. The picture that emerges is of a coterie that—in influence, creativity, and affection—rivals Wordsworth’s more famous exchange with Coleridge in the 1790s. The edition includes an extended critical study of how Wordsworth and Beaumont helped shape one another’s work, tracing processes of mutual artistic development that involved not only a meeting of aristocratic refinement and rural simplicity, of a socialite and a lover of retirement, of a painter and a poet, but also an aesthetic rapprochement between neoclassical and romantic values, between the impulse to idealize and the desire to particularize.

The Chemical Engineering Practice School (ChEPS) at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Bangkok is a two-year international curriculum modeled after Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s School of Chemical Engineering Practice. The aim of this Master’s program is to produce professional chemical engineers with strong fundamentals, practical experience, and a good command of English. The program’s uniqueness lies in its strong linkage with the industrial sector. This chapter contains a history of ChEPS and details how KMUTT operates the program. The key factors contributing to the success of the program are identified. Moreover, critical analyses gleaned from the faculty, the alumni, and the industrial sponsors are carried out to examine the current strengths of ChEPS and to identify areas for improvement. Key challenges still facing the program are also outlined. Finally, potential solutions to these challenges are recommended.
