Abstract: Leachate is one of the products that produced by a landfill. Leachate is extremely potential to pollute the environment, such as soil, groundwater and surface water. Air Dingin and Jatibarang landfill have a treatment to treat the leachate produced by the landfill before it is discharged to the environment because it has to be in accordance with Regulation of Ministry of Environment and Forestry of Republic of Indonesia Number P.59/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/7/2016 concern Leachate Standard Quality for Businesses and/or Activities of Landfill. The leachate management in Air Dingin Landfill is controlled landfill, while in Jatibarang landfill, the the leachate management is coagulation-flocculation system. COD and BOD contained in Air Dingin Landfill leachate is lower than Jatibarang Landfill. In order to make leachate more environmental friendly, some innovative methods for leachate management have been developed, such as biofilter, wetlands, coagulation-fluctuation, and electrocoagulation.

The SAR Doppler frequencies are directly related to the motion of the scatterers in the illuminated area and have already been used in marine applications to monitor moving water surfaces. Here we investigate the possibility of retrieving surface water velocity from SAR Doppler analysis in medium-size lakes. ENVISAT images of the test site (Lake Garda) are processed and the Doppler Centroid Anomaly technique is adopted. The resulting surface velocity maps are compared with the outputs of a hydrodynamic model specifically validated for the case study. Thermal images from MODIS Terra are used in support of the modeling results. The surface velocity retrieved from SAR is found to overestimate the numerical results and the existence of a bias is investigated. In marine applications, such bias is traditionally removed through Geophysical Model Functions (GMFs) by ascribing it to a fully developed wind waves spectrum. We found that such an assumption is not supported in our case study, due to the small-scale variations of topography and wind. The role of wind intensity and duration on the results from SAR is evaluated, and the inclusion of lake bathymetry and the SAR backscatter gradient is recommended for the future development of GMFs suitable for lake environments.

The Austrian standard for designing combined sewer overflow (CSO) detention basins introduces the efficiency of the combined sewer overflows as an indicator for CSO pollution. Additionally criteria for the ambient water quality are defined, which comprehend six kinds of impacts. In this paper, the Austrian legal requirements are described and discussed by means of hydrological modelling. This is exemplified with the case study Innsbruck (Austria) including a description for model building and model calibration. Furthermore an example is shown in order to demonstrate how – in this case – the overall system performance could be improved by implementing a cost-effective rearrangement of the storage tanks already available at the inflow of the wastewater treatment plant. However, this guideline also allows more innovative methods for reducing CSO emissions as measures for better usage of storage volume or de-centralised treatment of stormwater runoff because it is based on a sewer system simulation.
