The quality and accuracy of Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) products greatly depend on the methods used to define image orientations before they are used to create 3D point clouds. While most studies were conducted in non- or partially-forested areas, a limited number of studies have evaluated the spatial accuracy of UAS products derived by using different image block orientation methods in forested areas. In this study, three image orientation methods were used and compared: (a) the Indirect Sensor Orientation (InSO) method with five irregularly distributed Ground Control Points (GCPs); (b) the Global Navigation Satellite System supported Sensor Orientation (GNSS-SO) method using non-Post-Processed Kinematic (PPK) single-frequency carrier-phase GNSS data (GNSS-SO1); and (c) using PPK dual-frequency carrier-phase GNSS data (GNSS-SO2). The effect of the three methods on the accuracy of plot-level estimates of Lorey’s mean height (HL) was tested over the mixed, even-aged pedunculate oak forests of Pokupsko basin located in Central Croatia, and validated using field validation across independent sample plots (HV), and leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV). The GNSS-SO2 method produced the HL estimates of the highest accuracy (RMSE%: HV = 5.18%, LOOCV = 4.06%), followed by the GNSS-SO1 method (RMSE%: HV = 5.34%, LOOCV = 4.37%), while the lowest accuracy was achieved by the InSO method (RMSE%: HV = 5.55%, LOOCV = 4.84%). The negligible differences in the performances of the regression models suggested that the selected image orientation methods had no considerable effect on the estimation of HL. The GCPs, as well as the high image overlaps, contributed considerably to the block stability and accuracy of image orientation in the InSO method. Additional slight improvements were achieved by replacing single-frequency GNSS measurements with dual-frequency GNSS measurements and by incorporating PPK into the GNSS-SO2 method.

Making use of dual-frequency (DF) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations and good dynamic models, the precise orbit determination (POD) for the satellites on low earth orbits has been intensively investigated in the last decades and has achieved an accuracy of centimeters. With the rapidly increasing number of the CubeSat missions in recent years, the POD of CubeSats were also attempted with combined dynamic models and GNSS DF observations. While comprehensive dynamic models are allowed to be used in the postprocessing mode, strong constraints on the data completeness, continuity, and restricted resources due to the power and size limits of CubeSats still hamper the high-accuracy POD. An analysis of these constraints and their impact on the achievable orbital accuracy thus needs to be considered in the planning phase. In this study, with the focus put on the use of DF GNSS data in postprocessing CubeSat POD, a detailed sensitivity analysis of the orbital accuracy was performed w.r.t. the data continuity, completeness, observation sampling interval, latency requirements, availability of the attitude information, and arc length. It is found that the overlapping of several constraints often causes a relatively large degradation in the orbital accuracy, especially when one of the constraints is related to a low duty-cycle of, e.g., below 40% of time. Assuming that the GNSS data is properly tracked except for the assumed constraints, and using the International GNSS Service (IGS) final products or products from the IGS real-time service, the 3D orbital accuracy for arcs of 6 h to 24 h should generally be within or around 1 dm, provided that the limitation on data is not too severe, i.e., with a duty-cycle not lower than 40% and an observation sampling interval not larger than 60 s.

<p>When sensing the Earth’s ionosphere using pseudorange observations of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), the satellite and receiver Differential Code Biases (DCBs) account for one of the main sources of error. For the sake of convenience, Receiver DCBs (DCBs) are commonly assumed as constants over a period of one day in the traditional carrier-to-code leveling (CCL) method. Thus, remarkable intraday variability in the receiver DCBs have been ignored in the commonly-used assumption and may seriously restrict the accuracy of ionospheric observable retrieval. The Modified CCL (MCCL) method can eliminate the adverse impact of the short-term variations of RDCBs on the retrieval of ionospheric TEC. With the rapid development of the GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou systems, there is a strong demand of precise ionospheric TEC products for multiple constellations and frequencies. Considering the existed MCCL method can only be used for dual-frequency GNSS data, in this study, we extend the two-frequency MCCL method to the multi-frequency and multi-GNSS case and further carry out a series of investigations. In our proposed method, a newly full-rank multi-frequency (more than triple frequency) model with raw observations are established to synchronously estimate both the slant ionospheric delays and the RCB offset with respect to the reference epoch at each individual frequency. Based on the test results, compared to the traditional CCL-method, the accuracy of the ionospheric TEC retrieved using our proposed method can be improved from 5.12 TECu to 0.95 TECu in the case that significant short-term variations existed in receiver DCBs. In addition, the between-epoch fluctuations experienced by receiver code biases at all frequencies tracked by a single receiver can be detected by our the proposed method, and the dependence of multi-GNSS and multi-frequency RDCB offsets upon ambient temperature further are verified in this study. Compared to Galileo system, the RDCB in BDS show higher correlation with temperature. We also found that the RDCB at different frequencies of the same system show various characteristics.</p>

Advances in smartphone positioning in forests: dual-frequency receivers and raw GNSS data

Abstract Smartphones with their capability to receive Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals can be currently considered the most common devices used for positioning tasks, including forestry applications. This study focuses on possible improvements related to two crucial changes implemented into Android smartphone positioning in the last 3 years – dual-frequency (L1/L5) GNSS receivers and the possibility of recording raw GNSS data. The study comprises three experiments: (1) real-time measurements of individual points, (2) real-time recording of trajectories, and (3) post-processing of raw GNSS data provided by the smartphone receiver. The real-time tests were conducted using final positions provided by the internal receiver, i.e. without further processing or averaging. The test on individual points has proven that the Xiaomi Mi8 smartphone with a multi-constellation, dual-frequency receiver was the only device whose accuracy was not significantly different from single-frequency mapping-grade receiver under any conditions. The horizontal accuracy of most devices was lower during leaf-on season (root mean square errors between 5.41 and 12.55 m) than during leaf-off season (4.10–11.44 m), and the accuracy was significantly better under open-area conditions (1.72–4.51 m) for all tested devices when compared with forest conditions. Results of the second experiment with track recording suggest that smartphone receivers are better suited for dynamic applications – the mean shift between reference and measured trajectories varied from 1.23 to 5.98 m under leaf-on conditions. Post-processing of the raw GNSS data in the third experiment brought very variable results. We achieved centimetre-level accuracy under open-area conditions; however, in forest, the accuracies varied from meters to tens of meters. Observed loss of the signal strength in the forest represented ~20 per cent of the open-area value. Overall, the multi-constellation, dual-frequency receiver provided more robust and accurate positional solutions compared with single-frequency smartphones. Applicability of the raw GNSS data must be further studied especially in forests, as the provided data are highly susceptible to multipath and other GNSS adverse effects.

The electromagnetic (EM) method is commonly used in mineral exploration due to the method’s sensitivity to conductive targets. Controlled source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) is developed from magnetotelluric (MT) method with an artificial EM source to improve the signal amplitude. It has been used for mineral exploration for many years. In this study, we performed a case study of the CSAMT application for the Eagles-Nest lead–zinc (Pb–Zn) ore deposits in Jianshui, China. The Eagles-Nest deposit is located in southwest in China in forest-covered complex terrain, making it difficult to acquire the geophysical data. Based on the previous dual-frequency induced polarization (IP) results, we designed four profiles for the CSAMT data acquisition. After data processing and inversion, we mapped the subsurface resistivity distribution. From the CSAMT results, we inferred the location of the ore body, which was verified by the drilling wells. The Pb–Zn ore body was found at a depth between 373.70 m to 407.35 m in the well.

In this study, mesoscale environments associated with 57 significant tornadoes occurring over Italy in the period 2000–2018 are analyzed. The role of the vertical Wind Shear in the lower and middle troposphere, in terms of low-level shear (LLS) and deep-level shear (DLS), and of the convective available potential energy (CAPE) as possible precursors of significant tornadoes is statistically investigated. Wind shear and CAPE data are extracted from the ERA-5 and ERA-Interim reanalyses. Overall, the study indicates that: (a) values of these variables in the two uppermost quartiles of their statistical distribution significantly increases the probability of tornado occurrences; (b) the probability increases for increasing values of LLS and DLS, and (c) is maximum when either wind shear or CAPE are large. These conclusions hold for both the reanalysis datasets and do not depend upon the season and/or the considered area. With the possible exception of weak tornadoes, which are not included in our study, our results show that large wind shear, in the presence of medium-to-high values of CAPE, are reliable precursors of tornadoes.

This paper presents the second part of the research activities carried out to develop a novel Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Avionics-Based Integrity Augmentation (ABIA) system for manned and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications. The ABIA system's architecture was developed to allow real-time avoidance of safety-critical flight conditions and fast recovery of the required navigation performance in case of GNSS data losses. In more detail, our novel ABIA system addresses all four cornerstones of GNSS integrity augmentation in mission- and safety-critical avionics applications: prediction (caution flags), avoidance (optimal flight path guidance), reaction (warning flags) and correction (recovery flight path guidance). Part 1 (Sabatini et al., 2012) presented the ABIA concept, architecture and key mathematical models used to describe GNSS integrity issues in aircraft applications. This second part addresses the ABIA caution and warning integrity flags criteria and presents the results of a simulation case study performed on the TORNADO Interdiction and Strike (IDS) aircraft.
