This article describes the different machining methods of the ball nut thread. One of the disadvantages of machining high pitch ball nuts by grinding process is to produce a modified tool profile to avoid collisions between the tool holder and the workpiece. However, by using profiled lathe inserts, it is possible to produce the thread profile of the ball nut using turning technology. The applicability of the technology is verified by tooling and experimental machining based on conceptual designs, the results of which are described at the end of the article.

Stress analysis on wedge zone is an important step for micro-cutting tool design. The effect of stress borne by the cutting tool upon the radius of its blunt edge was analyzed, when the tool machines with minimum cutting thickness which is confined within 10-4-10-2mm. It shows that the minimal extreme value of the radius of blunt edge is existed in the process of micro-cutting tool design.

A general analytical model of the geometry of a biopsy needle tip is formulated. The model is then used to derive the correlations for the characteristic cutting mechanics angles and for their respective distribution along the active cutting edges of the needle tip. The angles are defined in analogy to the definitions used in cutting tool design for material removal operations. Specifically, analytical expressions for the inclination and rake angles of the tip are derived. The validity of the models was confirmed through their application to plausible needle tip geometries such as: flat, cylindrical and helical tips. The knowledge of the tip geometry and of the relevant angles is a prerequisite for the understanding of tissue cutting mechanics.
