Biwa (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Biwa (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.) can grow easily in the highlands in North Sumatra. This plant can be used to treat various diseases. This research aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of E. japonica leaves using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-pikrilhidrazil). E. japonica leaves were macerated using ethanol 96%. The extract was evaluated by free radical scavenging method using DPPH. Quercetin was used as standard antioxidant.  The extract was measured with concentrations of 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 ppm using spectrophotometer at 516 nm wavelength, after incubated with DPPH for 15 minutes. E. japonica leaves showed the IC50 value of 56,59 µg/mL, meanwhile, the IC50value of quercetin was 4,36 µg/mL. According to the result, E. japonica leaf was categorized as strong anti-oxidant and can be further developed

Fruits and vegetables have plenty of natural antioxidants, especially vitamin C and E. Fruits contained beta-carotene, phenolic compounds such as anthocyanin and other flavonoids, which showcase a wide range of biological benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti carcinogenic properties. Eriobotrya japonica commonly called as loquat fruit, is a subtropical evergreen fruit. In the present study an attempt was made to analyzed the phytochemical screening, nutraceuticals and antioxidant activity of the aforesaid traditionally important and pharmacologically potent fruits and seeds of E. japonica. The dried powdered fruits and seed samples were subjected for the analysis of nutritional parameters, phytochemical screening and evaluation of antioxidant activity. The nutritional parameters such as total carbohydrate, total starch, total proteins and levels of free amino acids were analyzed. Phytochemical screening of E. japonica clearly showed the presence of certain important secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, glycosides, cardiac glycosides, phytosterol and gums and mucilage. The antioxidant activity of the plant extracts were determined by using super oxide free radical scavenging assay. The results of the present study clearly indicated that methanol seed extract showed better free radical scavenging activity at concentration of 1000 mg/ml of extract. Among the selected samples fruits of E.japonica was found to be more potent than the seeds of the same species. However, more advanced pharmacological and clinical studies would be required to investigate in vivo mechanism of pharmacological effects of this important edible fruits E. japonica.

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidative potential of tubers of Habenaria pectinata. Methods: The tubers of H. pectinata were extracted using hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water as solvents. The anti-oxidant potential of extracts was evaluated using free radical scavenging and reducing power assays. The most active methanolic extract was then fractionated into four fractions using the above-mentioned solvents. Results: The phenol and flavonoid content was found to be maximum in the methanol extracts. All the extracts and fractions showed significant levels of antioxidant activity except hexane extract. Conclusion: The tubers of H. pectinata were found to possess a significant antioxidant potential and can be explored further for isolation and preclinical investigation for the ailment of various diseased states and disorders.

Bergenia ciliata is an essential medicinal plant used in regions where western medicines are inaccessible due to their unavailability and high cost. The methanolic extract of Bergenia ciliataroots was separated for phytochemical elements and in-vitro antioxidant activity. The plant extract showed the rich outgrowth of secondary metabolites that play the role for biological activities. The higher antioxidant functioning of the plant is due to the occurrence of reactive elements like phenols and flavonoids. The antioxidant functioning of the plant extract was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging assay. In DPPH free radical scavenging assay the IC50 value of Bergenia ciliata was found to be 11.21μg/mL, while the IC50 value of standard ascorbic acid was found to be 45.93μg/mL

In present study, free radical scavenging activity of methanolic extract of all parts (leaves, seeds, root, stem and flower) of Perilla frutescens L. has been estimated. The promising results, among the five plant parts leaves, seeds, root, stem, flower and the standard tested for the in vitro antioxidant activity using the DPPH method, the crude methanolic extracts of all parts showed antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 5.95 ± 0.10, 8.28 ± 0.20, 66.27 ± 0.17, 80.03 ± 0.10 and 122.35 ± 0.17 μg/mL, respectively. The IC50 value for ascorbic acid was 5.19 ± 0.26 μg/mL. While butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) a synthetic commercial antioxidant has comparatively high IC50 value of 108.46 ± 0.57 μg/mL. Presence of zinc in all parts of plant in the range 17.20 ± 0.22 to 33.56 ± 0.32 ppm further supports the strong antioxidant activity of Perilla frutescens L. The phytochemical tests indicated that all parts of Perilla frutescens L. have considerable proportion of important phytochemicals and are in rich source of secondary metabolites like polyphenols, tannins, alkaloids and flavonoids. Several of such compounds are known to possess potent antioxidant activity.

A series of 2-substituted-5-methylbenzimidazole derivatives (3a-e) were synthesized by reacting   4-methyl-1,2-phenylenediamine (1) with a number of p-substituted benzaldehydes (2a-e) in moderate yields (25.51-   40.21%). The synthesized compounds (3a-e) were characterized by spectroscopic data and were evaluated for   antioxidant activity using DPPH free radical scavenging assay. The compounds showed significant antioxidant   activity having IC50 value of 1.054-19.05 μg/ml as compared to the standard BHT (26.96 μg/ml).Dhaka Univ. J. Pharm. Chitosan with 80% degree of deacetylation was hydrolyzed by cellulase of Trichoderma viride to prepare chitooligosaccharides (COSs) by the fractionation of the COSs with ultrafiltration membrane. The antioxidant activities of the COSs were clarified in this study by reducing power and free radical scavenging ability assay by UV-VIS absorption spectrum. The results show that the COS 1 (10,000-5,000 Da), COS 2 (5,000-3,000 Da), COS 3 (3,000-1,000 Da) and COS 4 (less than1,000 Da) segments have antioxidant properties. The antioxidant activitives of the COSs increased with the increment of concentration, and they also depended on molecular weight.
