Introduction: This paper focuses on the derived equations to evaluate the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders with local denting damage under combined loadings. The damage generation scenarios in this research are representing the collision accidents of offshore stiffened cylinders with supply ships. Methods: Numerical analysis of structures are performed using Abaqus software after validation against the experiments from the authors. The responses from seventeen cylinder specimens are analyzed to develop the numerical methods. Results: Good accuracy results were achieved when comparing the test results and the simulation results. Parametric studies are then performed on design examples of ring-stiffened cylinders when considering both intact and damaged conditions for assessing the reduction factor. Then, the novel simple design equations to assess the residual strength of ring-stiffened cylinders after ship collision are derived based on the regression analysis. These equations have good accuracy with mean value Xm (Uncertainty modeling factor) around 1.0 and together with COV (Coefficient of Variation) lower than 5.3%. Conclusion: The accuracy and reliability of the derived equations are validated by comparing it with the existing test data in open access. It is concluded that the proposed equations have high accuracy and reliability, and convenient application for the purpose of checking the residual strength of dented offshore cylinder under ship collisions.

A variety of parametric studies utilizing the finite element analysis (FEA) have been performed by Kim et al in order to predict the mechanical behavior(ultimate strength) of single shear bolted joints in cold-formed(thin-walled) stainless steel. The precedent researches have been conducted with respect to the mechanical behaviors of single shear bolted joints fabricated with four bolts and two bolts. Subsequently, this study has been focused on the comparison of ultimate behaviors between the existing test results and FEA results. In addition, parametric study has been performed in order to investigate the influence of mesh size and washer existence on ultimate behaviors. Therefore, reasonable finite element modelling method and condition were recommended in this paper.

Steel cleanliness as measured by nonmetallic inclusion content in steel plays a major role in affecting bearing durability. A high-fidelity virtual bearing life test model was developed to predict the impact of inclusions on bearing fatigue life. This model analyzes distributions of inclusion size, shape, orientation, and location, and computes stress alterations to bearing material due to inclusions and the resulting life reduction. Comparisons between model predictions and experimental test results were made, confirming the validity of the model. Parametric studies were conducted to explore the effects of inclusion counts, inclusion size distributions, and the effect of overall bearing size on bearing life. A regression equation was proposed based on simulation results, linking the bearing life reduction factor (LRF) to the accumulative inclusion length within the stressed volume under contact load.

SummaryOur previous prospective study of post-infarction patients described a strong and significant association of increased plasma D-dimer concentrations in those who experienced a subsequent coronary death or non-fatal myocardial infarction. In the present study, we compare results on stored plasma obtained two months after the index myocardial infarction from 1,038 patients of this trial, using a simple automated latex agglutination (LA) assay in parallel with the standard ELISA test. Results show a somewhat higher mean value for the LA assay (702 ± 1092 vs. 638 ± 986 ng/ml, p = 0.0002), a strong linear correlation of the two assays (r = 0.86) and 88% agreement for values below 500 ng/ml by the ELISA test. D-dimer concentrations determined by each assay were highly correlated in patients with subsequent coronary artery events (p = 0.93) and quartile values for both the LA and ELISA were equally predictive of such events (p = 0.003 and p = 0.001, respectively). This is the first demonstration that a latex agglutination assay for D-dimer can be used to assess the prognostic risk of recurrent coronary thrombotic disease after myocardial infarction

Abstract Background The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic has affected prehospital care systems across the world, but the prehospital presentation of affected patients and the extent to which prehospital care providers are able to identify them is not well characterized. In this study, we describe the presentation of Covid-19 patients in a Swedish prehospital care system, and asses the predictive value of Covid-19 suspicion as documented by dispatch and ambulance nurses. Methods Data for all patients with dispatch, ambulance, and hospital records between January 1–August 31, 2020 were extracted. A descriptive statistical analysis of patients with and without hospital-confirmed Covid-19 was performed. In a subset of records beginning from April 14, we assessed the sensitivity and specificity of documented Covid-19 suspicion in dispatch and ambulance patient care records. Results A total of 11,894 prehospital records were included, of which 481 had a primary hospital diagnosis code related to-, or positive test results for Covid-19. Covid-19-positive patients had considerably worse outcomes than patients with negative test results, with 30-day mortality rates of 24% vs 11%, but lower levels of prehospital acuity (e.g. emergent transport rates of 14% vs 22%). About half (46%) of Covid-19-positive patients presented to dispatchers with primary complaints typically associated with Covid-19. Six thousand seven hundred seventy-six records were included in the assessment of predictive value. Sensitivity was 76% (95% CI 71–80) and 82% (78–86) for dispatch and ambulance suspicion respectively, while specificities were 86% (85–87) and 78% (77–79). Conclusions While prehospital suspicion was strongly indicative of hospital-confirmed Covid-19, based on the sensitivity identified in this study, prehospital suspicion should not be relied upon as a single factor to rule out the need for isolation precautions. The data provided may be used to develop improved guidelines for identifying Covid-19 patients in the prehospital setting.

This study evaluated the performance of a hybrid panel that can overcome the current problem of corrosion of the steel panels of improved movable weirs when they are exposed to a sulfate and calcium chloride environment such as sea water. A hybrid panel with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) layers on both sides of a steel panel means that the central panel is not exposed to the external elements, which can avoid corrosion problems. In this study, to maximize the hybrid panel’s strength and durability, the moisture absorption characteristics and the durability in an accelerated environment were evaluated. The test results were considered to indicate no durability issues as the final absorption ratio was approximately 2.0% or less in all environments. Also, from the accelerated deterioration test results when the steel panel processed by sand blasting was applied in all accelerated deterioration environments, it satisfied the residual strength level of 65% or more. However, in the case without surface processing, upon exposure to MgSO4 solution, it did not satisfy the standard residual strength level of 65%. These results show that sand blasting on the surface of a steel panel is adequate for hybrid panels for improved movable weirs.

In this study, a dual-layered polarization and frequency reconfigurable microstrip antenna is proposed based on sequential mechanical axial rotation of the circular metal radiator. The antenna can be reconfigured among three different polarized modes, including the linear polarization (LP), left-handed circular polarization and right-handed circular polarization in the band from 4.68 to 4.80 GHz (2.53%). The resonance frequency of the proposed antenna with the same LP mode could also be tuned in the range from 4.70 to 5.03 GHz by mechanical rotation of the breach-truncated circular metal radiator as well as the circular substrate. Furthermore, the polarization characteristic and frequency can be reconfigured, respectively, as the circular radiator is taken an axial rotation with an angle of 360°. The presented antenna in the four different states has been numerically simulated and fabricated for the experimental measurement, the investigated characteristics includes the port reflection coefficient, axial ratio, radiation pattern, gain, and the radiation efficiency. The simulated and test results agreed well with each other. This antenna enriches the novel mechanical reconfigurable method except for the popular electrical approach.

An electric oil pump (EOP) was integrated into the hydraulic system and an automatic transmission (AT) mechanical oil pump (MOP) was downsized. These processes were performed to combine a start-stop function with the AT and further improve the transmission efficiency. Furthermore, this study established a dynamics model of power loss and leakage of an 8-speed AT; a flow-based control algorithm of the EOP was then developed to realize the start-stop function and support the MOP to meet the flow requirement of the system. Based on a driving simulation method, sizes of the MOP and EOP that ensured optimal fuel economy were selected. A control strategy for the starting clutch was also developed to minimize the starting delay of the test vehicle. A test environment on a rig and prototype vehicle was established to verify the feasibility of the proposed control strategies. The test results indicated that the transmission functioned favorably with the novel two-pump system presented, and a quick and smooth starting performance was achieved when the engine was restarted. The findings in this study are extremely valuable for forward designs of an AT for realizing start-stop function and improving efficiency.

In this study, FE modeling method for the buckling/ultimate strength analysis of a continuous stiffened panel under combined shear and thrust is proposed. In order to validate the proposed method, shear buckling collapse tests of a stiffened panel and FEM analysis are carried out. As the result of these, it is confirmed that the buckling collapse behavior and the ultimate strength estimated by the proposed method are in good agreement with the test results.

Corrosion pits with a conical shape are typically observed in hold frames in way of cargo holds of bulk carriers which carry coal and iron ore. The ratio of the diameter to the depth of the typical corrosion pits is in the range between 8–1 and 10–1 and its diameter might become up to 50mm. The evaluation of residual strength of members with large uneven pitting corrosion is difficult compared with that of members with general corrosion. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to develop a method for the evaluation of residual strength of pitted members. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of pitting corrosion on the ultimate strength of steel plates under various loading conditions and explore a method for the evaluation of residual thickness of pitted plates. In the present study, a series of non-linear FE-analyses has been conducted with steel plates with a variety of random pit distributions under various loading conditions such as uni-axial compression, bi-axial compression, shear and combination of these. In these analyses, random pit distributions were calculated by the previously developed corrosion model. It has been shown that equivalent thickness loss, which is defined as thickness loss of uniformly corroded plates with the same ultimate strength as the randomly pitted plates, is smaller than or equal to 1.25 times the average thickness loss. It has been also revealed that the equivalent thickness loss for the ultimate strength under the above-mentioned loading conditions is smaller than average thickness loss at the minimum cross section, where the average thickness loss at the minimum cross section almost corresponds to the equivalent thickness loss for the tensile strength. Based on these findings, a method for the estimation of equivalent thickness loss of pitted plates has been discussed using the thickness diminution-DOP relationship, where DOP (Degree of Pitting Intensity) is defined as the ratio of the pitted surface area to the total surface area.

Background: Cold-formed steel structural sections used in the walls of residential buildings and agricultural facilities are commonly C-shaped sections with web holes. These holes located in the web of sections can alter the elastic stiffness and the ultimate strength of a structural member. The objective of this paper is to study the buckling mode and load-carrying capacity of cold-formed thin-walled steel column with slotted web holes. Methods: Compression tests were conducted on 26 intermediate length columns with and without holes. The tested compressive members included four different kinds of holes. For each specimen, a shell finite element Eigen-buckling analysis and nonlinear analysis were also conducted. The influence of the slotted web hole on local and distortional buckling response had also been studied. The comparison on ultimate strength between test results and calculated results using Chinese cold-formed steel specification GB50018-2002, North American cold-formed steel specification AISI S100-2016, and nonlinear Finite Element method was made. Result: Test results showed that the distortional buckling occurred for intermediate columns with slotted holes and the ultimate strength of columns with holes was less than that of columns without holes. The ultimate strength of columns decreased with the increase in transverse width of hole in the cross-section of member. The Finite element analysis results showed that the web holes could influence on the elastic buckling stress of columns. The shell finite element could be used to model the buckling modes and analysis the ultimate strength of members with slotted web holes. The calculated ultimate strength shows that results predicted with AISI S100-2016 and analyzed using finite element method are close to test results. The calculated results using Chinese code are higher than the test results because Chinese code has no provision to calculate the ultimate strength of members with slotted web holes. Conclusion: The calculated method for cold-formed thin-walled steel columns with slotted web holes are proposed based on effective width method in Chinese code. The results calculated using the proposed method show good agreement with test results and can be used in engineering design for some specific cold-formed steel columns with slotted web holes studied in this paper.
