Six 5-arylidene-3-methylrhodanine derivatives were synthesized by the crossed aldolization of aromatic aldehydes with 3- methylrhodanine using 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride ([BMI]Cl) as phase transfer catalyst in water. The reactions, under microwave irradiation (160 watts) during 10 minutes, afforded the yield of 59–83 %. This is the first time [BMI]Cl was used as phase transfer catalyst in the aldol condensation.

Different aromatic aldehydes and cinnamaldehyde undergo cross-aldol condensation with chroman-4-ones and1-thiochroman-4-ones in the presence of amberlyst-15 under microwave irradiation in solvent free condition to afford rapidly the correspondingE-3-arylidene andE-3-cinnamylidene derivatives, respectively, in high yield. This process is simple, efficient and environmentally benign.

For the first time the 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) catalyzed straightforward and efficient procedure has been developed for the synthesis of 3,3′-(arylmethylene) bis(2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione) derivatives starting from lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) and a variety of (hetero)aromatic aldehydes in ethanol under microwave irradiation. Three of nine synthesized compounds are new. This method provides notable advantages over existing procedures including use of non-traditional basic catalyst and environmentally benign solvent, mild reaction conditions, excellent yields, short reaction time and simple workup.

As an effective solid-liquid phase-transfer catalyst as well as an ionic liquid medium Aliquat® 336 has been applied in the synthesis of cinnamate esters under mild green chemistry procedures involving microwave irradiation.
