New exploration results proved the presence of Tertiary sedimentary basins with hydrocarbon potential in the boundaries of Vietnam continental shelf. These basins were perhaps formed in the Early Oligocene on the Mesozoic basement of continental crust and were filled with mainly deltaic clastic sediments. Since very early Miocene these basins have linked together and extended wider. Sediments of marine and prograding delta facies accumulated and widespreaded on the whole continental shelf. At the Middle Miocene to present-day the opening of the Bien Dong Sea (Vietnam East Sea), the regional tectonic subsidence and the eustatic fluctuation had created sedimentary formations of open and deep marine facies with turbidite shale, platform carbonate including reef build-up. Andesite and basalt extrusion occurred in form of dykes resulting from tectonic inversions in Late Oligocene, in the beginning of Middle Miocene, particularly in Late Miocene-Pliocene. These Tertiary sedimentary basins are expected to have hydrocarbon potential and need to be investigated and explored adequately. The main risk is the drilling technology, the exploitation in the deep sea and high investment cost. The recently exploration results in illustrated a better potential in Lower Oligocene reservoir in South East margin of Cuu Long basin and many new signs. These signs need to be highlight researched for predicting accumulation distribution in study area, in purpose of oil and gas exploration for next stages.

Background. Three prospective sedimentary complexes — Aptian-Upper Cretaceous, Paleogene and Neogene — are predicted in the waters of the Eastern Arctic seas. Here, the search for oil and gas is associated with harsh Arctic conditions at sea, as well as with high geological risks and significant expenditures under the conditions of poor knowledge of the region. In this regard, the localisation of prospecting drilling objects and the assessment of the geological risks of deposit discovery should be carried out.Aim. To assess geological risks and to determine the probability of discovering oil and gas fields, as well as to identify prospective areas for licensing and exploration in the water areas of the Eastern Arctic.Materials and methods. Structural and heat flow maps along with the results of geochemical analysis, as well as typical terrestrial sections were used as initial materials. Using the method of basin analysis, the modelling of generation-accumulation hydrocarbon systems (GAHS) and the quantitative assessment of its hydrocarbon potential in the Eastern Arctic water area was carried out. The assessment of geological risks and the probability of field discovery was performed using the conventional methodology widely applied by oil companies.Results. The GAHS modelling using a variation approach showed that, regardless of the kerogen type, with average values of Сorg in sediments, potential oil-and-gas source strata (OGSS) were capable of saturating the prospective objects with hydrocarbons. The “OGSS assessment” factor was determined as “encouraging” (0.7). Active geodynamic regime and the manifestation of several folding phases within the study area provided favourable conditions for the formation of anticlinaltraps in sedimentary basins. However, the cap rock quality rating was assessed as “neutral” (0.5). The overall risk for the “Trap assessment” factor was estimated based on the minimum criterion of 0.5.Conclusion. The most prospective areas recommended for licensing were selected, and the recommendations for further geological exploration work in these areas were given in order to clarify their hydrocarbon potential and reduce geological risks.

The petroliferous sedimentary basins of the UK Continental Shelf are remarkable for the diversity of their reservoir strata. Reservoir rocks in fields currently in production range in age from Devonian to earliest Eocene, but significant hydrocarbon discoveries have also been made in rocks as as young as the mid-Eocene. The reservoirs are predominantly siliciclastic rocks, with facies ranging from continental fluvial and aeolian, to marine gravity flow deposits from sub-wave base environments.In this paper stratigraphic context of the producing horizons in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), principally the North Sea, is reviewed, and the sedimentation of the reservoir strata placed in an outline geological history. The main producing horizons are described in summary. Matters of stratigraphic terminology and correlation both between fields and between basins are discussed.A lithostratigraphy for the UK southern North Sea was established by Rhys (1974), and for the central and northern North Sea by Deegan & Scull (1977). Although these schemes have proved to be fairly robust, in the last 13 years the acquisition of new data plus a proliferation of new terms not fully documented in the public domain, argue strongly for a comprehensive revision and rationalization which is beyond the scope of this paper. Attempts in the public domain to standardize nomenclature across international boundaries in the North Sea, pursued by Deegan & Scull (1977) for the UK and Norwegian sectors, have lapsed for the most part in subsequent years.Economic basement in the UK North Sea can be regarded at present

ABSTRACT. We present in this paper a seismic-stratigraphical framework for pressure prediction for oil and gas exploration in sedimentary basins, that is based on seismic information, with application to a marine part of the Jequitinhonha basin (east of the State of Bahia, Brazil). For this purpose it is necessary the knowledge of velocity distributions (compressional vP and shear vS), that can be obtained from seismic sections, petrophysical information and empirical models, and the distribution of density (ρ). We show some details of the theoretical modeling method, with an example that shows how pressure varies in the subsurface. We highlight that pressure that does not necessarily increase linearly with depth, but in a complex way that requires specific numerical calculations to be able to see important details related to a reservoir and surroundings. The model considers the vertical gravity load as the source of pressure in the geological formations, and in the present case we do not take into account the effects of formation curvatures, faulting, diagenesis and lateral tectonic events. We show that the meaning of cap rock of a reservoir is not to be related to lithology, but directly to the physics of high and low pressure zones that results from the mechanics of solid bodies under a stress-strain system; in this direction, and as a curiosity, we also show how a basement rock can become a reservoir. It is important to emphasize that an accurate prediction needs a 3D model for a meaningful and complete practical application, in the other hand, it requires handling large matrices.   Keywords: basin modeling, seismic velocity analysis, pressure prediction, empirical models.   RESUMO. Este artigo tem como objetivo compor uma estratégia sismo-estratigráfica onde se visa a predição de pressão na exploração de gás e óleo em bacias sedimentares com base em informação sísmica, com aplicação a uma parte marinha da bacia de Jequitinhonha (leste do estado da Bahia, Brasil). Para esta finalidade ´e necessário o conhecimento das distribuições de velocidades (compressiva vP e cisalhante vS) que podem ser obtidas a partir de seções sísmicas, informações petrofísicas e modelos empíricos, e da distribuição de densidade (ρ). Apresentamos alguns detalhes da modelagem teórica, e um exemplo para mostrar como a pressão varia na subsuperfície, onde destacamos que a predição de pressão não aumenta necessariamente linearmente, mas de uma forma complexa que requer cálculos numéricas específicos para poder obter detalhes relacionados a um reservatório. O modelo apresenta a carga vertical da gravidade como a fonte de pressão nas formações geológicas, e neste caso não se leva em consideração os efeitos de curvaturas das camadas, falhas, diagênese e eventos tectônicos laterais. Mostramos que o significado de uma rocha selante de um reservatório não deve estar relacionado `a litologia, mas simplesmente à física de zonas de alta e baixa pressão como resultado da mecânica dos corpos sólidos sob o sistema de tensão-deformação; neste sentido, e como curiosidade, mostramos também como uma rocha do embasamento pode se tornar um reservatório de óleo e gás. É importante observar que uma predição com precisão necessita de um modelo 3D para uma aplicação prática significativa e completa, mas que requer o manuseio de matrizes grandes.   Palavras-chave: modelagem de bacia, análise de velocidade sísmica, predição de pressão, modelos empíricos.

Conditions for the formation of hydrocarbon systems and prospects for searching for accumulations of oil and gas in the waters of the Eastern Arctic are considered. Significant hydrocarbon potential is predicted in the sedimentary basins of this region. All known manifestations of oil hydrocarbons are installed on land adjacent to the south, as well as on the east of the shelf. The East Arctic waters are included in a single model in order to perform an adequate comparative analysis of the evolution of hydrocarbon systems. The purpose of the research was to build space-time digital models of sedimentary basins and hydrocarbon systems, and to quantify the volume of generation, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbons for the main horizons of source rocks. To achieve this goal, a spatiotemporal numerical basin simulation was carried out, based on which the distribution of probable hydrocarbon systems was determined and further analyzed. Following to the data obtained the most probable HC accumulation zones and types of fluids contained in potential traps were predicted. The sedimentary basin Song Hong is one of the largest Cenozoic oil and gas bearing sedimentary basins, in which the center of the basin covers a large part. It elongates from block 105 to block 115. This article presents the geological structure, history of geological development, oil and gas potential and characteristics of reservoirs f the central basin, where the thickness of the basin deposits reaches more than 16 000 m.

Twenty-four species of Orbiniidae, 12 new to science, are reported from continental shelf and slope (deep-sea) habitats of the western North Atlantic. The majority of new material was collected during reconnaissance and monitoring surveys along the entire U.S. Atlantic coast from New England to the Carolinas that were intended to understand the potential impacts of oil and gas exploration in poorly known offshore environments. Additional materials from shallow water and shelf habitats off New England and New York as part of other projects are also included. New collections of Califia schmitti (Pettibone, 1957), Leitoscoloplos acutus (Verrill, 1873), L. fragilis (Verrill, 1873), L. obovatus Mackie, 1987, L. robustus (Verrill, 1873), Scoloplos intermedius (Hartman, 1965), Orbinia swani (Pettibone, 1957), Phylo felix (Kinberg, 1866), P. norvegicus (Sars, 1872), P. ornatus (Verrill, 1873), and Questa trifurcata (Hobson, 1970) provide additional morphological details, variability, and extended geographic and bathymetric distributions of previously known species. New species include Leitoscoloplos pustulus n. sp., Scoloplos papillatus n. sp., S. pettiboneae n. sp., S. pseudoarmiger n. sp., S. verrilli n. sp., Leodamas cuneatus n. sp., L. mucronatus n. sp., L. notoaciculatus n. sp., Phylo paraornatus n. sp., Orbiniella acsara n. sp., O. armata n. sp., and O. mimica n. sp. Juveniles of some species of Leitoscoloplos and Scoloplos were found to resemble known species of the meiofaunal orbiniid genus Schroederella Laubier, 1962. As such, S. berkeleyi Laubier, 1971 is referred to synonymy with Leitoscoloplos acutus. More importantly, the genus Schroederella was found to be pre-occupied by Schroederella Enderlein, 1921 in the Insecta, Diptera, family Helomyzidae. Gesaschroederella nomen nov. is therefore proposed as a replacement name for the polychaete homonym.
