This paper aims to study the relation between cultural distance and export volume of Vietnamese enterprises. Based on Transaction Cost Theory developed by Hennart (1991), the author hypothesizes that the further the cultural distance between Vietnam and its import partner, the lower the export intensity is. The survey data of Viet Nam Statistics Office on 162 export firms are used to test the proposed hypothesis. Empirical results from Tobit non-linear regression indicate that the hypothesis is strongly supported after characteristics of enterprises are controlled. Managerial implications are also suggested in this paper.

Purpose Based on the transaction cost theory, this paper aims to investigate the impact of cultural distance on international strategic alliance formation and its underlying mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses the investment of foreign firms in the Chinese Venture Capital market as an empirical background, Obtaining VC data from Zero2IPO Private Equity, CVsource Investment Database (2001–2015). This paper chooses the Logit regression method, according to Lind’s three-step method to test the inverted U-shaped relationship. Findings The empirical analysis of foreign venture capital firms invested in China revealed that there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between cultural distance and the possibility of international strategic alliances. This relationship is the result of two opposing mechanisms, which are the need and the feasibility of international strategic alliances. In addition, this study further examined the moderating effects of social embeddedness and social reputation, revealing the boundary effects on the complex relationship between cultural distance and possible international strategic alliance formation. Originality/value This study focuses on cultural difference, which is a key factor leading to a firm’s transaction costs. Based on the transaction cost theory, this paper investigates the impact of cultural distance on international strategic alliance formation and its underlying mechanisms.

This study investigates the factors explaining the franchisors choice between single-unit and multi-unit franchising based on agency theory and transaction cost theory. We examine the impact of behavioral uncertainty due to shirking and free-riding, franchisees transaction-specific investments, and environmental uncertainty on the franchisors choice of multi-unit franchising. Our empirical results from the German franchise sector provide strong support of the transaction cost hypotheses and relatively weak support of the agency-theoretical hypotheses. This study contributes to the literature by showing that the transaction cost explanation complements the agency cost explanation of multi-unit franchising.

Abstract Background Students’ ratings of bedside teaching courses are difficult to evaluate and to comprehend. Validated systematic analyses of influences on students’ perception and valuation of bedside teaching can serve as the basis for targeted improvements. Methods Six hundred seventy-two observations were conducted in different surgical departments. Survey items covered the categories teacher’s performance, student’s self-perception and organizational structures. Relevant factors for the student overall rating were identified by multivariable linear regression after exclusion of variable correlations > 0.500. The main target for intervention was identified by the 15% worst overall ratings via multivariable logistic regression. Results According to the students the success of bedside teaching depended on their active participation and the teacher’s explanations of pathophysiology. Further items are both relevant to the overall rating and a possible negative perception of the session. In comparison, negative perception of courses (worst 15%) is influenced by fewer variables than overall rating. Variables that appear in both calculations show slight differences in their weighing for their respective endpoints. Conclusion Relevant factors for overall rating and negative perception in bedside teaching can be identified by regression analyses of survey data. Analyses provide the basis for targeted improvement.

Transaction cost theory has been the dominant theoretical lens used in the study of joint ventures. The purpose of this paper is to explain the formation of joint ventures from the resource-based perspective and to compare this perspective with transaction cost theory. By focusing on the cost aspect of a transaction, the transaction cost logic explains joint ventures in terms of market failure for intermediate inputs, asset specificity, and high uncertainty over specifying and monitoring performance. Putting more emphasis on the benefit side of a transaction, resource-based theory regards joint ventures as a means of exploiting and developing a firm's resources. The transaction cost and resource-based explanations are, to a certain extent, complementary. Taking the stance of theoretical pluralism, an attempt is made to synthesize the two theories into a more comprehensive perspective which takes both costs and benefits into account.
