Thanks to its geodiversity, the Ha Tien – Kien Luong area has several geosites of great scientific, economic, social, educational and aesthetic values. Some geosites were recognized as national beauty spots, and they have been exploited for tourism. However, many of them have been degraded by the natural and human impacts. Research methods including field study, interviewing the people, specialist consultation, and reference to international experiences were used to evaluate the actual state of the geosites. Results of this study determined the current management and conservation of five geosites including Mui Nai, Thach Dong, Da Dung, Hon Chong and Moso. The authors proposed a number of solutions of management models, policy rules, financial planning, community consultation and education, and cooperation.

This paper focuses on the discursive strategies used by the Singapore government to construct national identity and solidarity on the basis of a ‘clean and green’ environment. By analysing the slogans used in the Clean and Green Week campaign in terms of the use of pronouns and the pragmatic notion of ‘politeness’, the paper shows that the people of Singapore are not only persuaded to ‘buy’ the idea of environmentalism, but also to buy into the ideology of national identity and unity being derived (in part) from the proper management and conservation of Singapore’s scarce resources and limited physical space. The paper concludes with a discussion on how national campaigns such as the Clean and Green Week constitutes a form of political discourse, where public educational discourse becomes a veiled medium through which socio-political ideologies are produced and propagated. With the government treading the fine line between information and manipulation where ‘greening’ a country becomes a scaffolding for building a nation, a study like this offers interesting insights into the interplay between the language of politics and the politics of language.

Eastern Visayas is constantly experiencing a series of calamities since the tragic mudslide in the community of Guinsaugon Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte in 2006. As a result, the state of calamity declared in almost every part the country due to heavy rains that devastated agriculture, livestock and properties. This study was conducted to assess the level of the community officials’ related awareness on climate change, more particular on its cause and effect, thought and belief, and the course of action through community ordinances related to climate change. The study utilizes the descriptive survey method of research. Data was analyzed and interpreted using weighted mean and percentages to describe the level of awareness of the elected officials towards climate change. Majority agreed that climate change is happening and presently affecting the people in the community. Thought of respondents towards climate change is highly coupled with religious thinking. Actual state of affairs (situation) is the priority of the community officials leading to the inaccurate expectation of the long term effect of climate change. Community officials’ awareness on the causes and effect of climate change is observable but limited on vulnerability and adaptation. Thus, additional exposure and depth understanding on climate change is recommended.   Keywords- Climate change, awareness, political and social responsibilities, descriptive-survey, Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte, Philippines

Allergic diseases affect many people across the globe. They are considered to significantly disturb the quality of life of the people who are affected, creating personal and economic predicaments. Some of the most commonly diagnosed allergic diseases include atopic dermatitis, rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and sinusitis. Some conditions, such as eosinophilic esophagitis, are on the rise and are being diagnosed across all continents except for Africa. The use of antihistamines has been the mainstay of therapy for most allergic conditions, except for other conditions that require corticosteroids, or in severe allergic conditions such as anaphylaxis where antihistamines are ineffective as main therapy. It is important to consider first versus second-generation options when treating allergic diseases, also bearing in mind the duration of therapy and any comorbid conditions that a patient might have. This article provides an overview of these conditions and their current management options.

Archaeological evidence indicates that the continent of Sahul has been continuously settled for almost as long as modern humans have lived outside of Africa. The relative isolation of the continent, and the difficulty involved in getting there, have meant that the populations have not been subject to the large-scale population replacement seen in other parts of the world. Recent advances in DNA sequencing technology, including the ability to sequence full genomes in both ancient and modern populations, have revealed that the genomes of the Indigenous peoples of Australia and New Guinea, and the local fauna, can contribute significantly to our understanding of early human migrations from Africa, human impacts on environments, as well as human evolution more broadly. Given the power of genomic data, it is of the utmost importance that genomic research of ancient and modern samples is conducted ethically, with full community consultation and engagement at all stages.

The great object of Augustus in celebrating Ludi saeculares in 17 b.c. was to encourage the belief in himself and the consequent active loyalty to himself, as the restorer of the pax deorum,—the good relation between the divine and human inhabitants of Rome. So far he had tried to attain this end by the ancient usual and proper means, i.e. by carrying out the various regulations of the ius diuinum, so many of which had long been neglected. But in that year he determined to undertake a special celebration, with the design of more effectually stamping the impression already made on the minds of the people; and it so happens that we have more detailed knowledge of this celebration than of any other Roman rite of any period. This is fortunate, for it stands on the margin between an old and a new régime, like the Aeneid of Virgil, who had died two years earlier: that great religious poem was just becoming known, and there is an allusion to it in the hymn of which I am going to speak. The Ludi were the outward or ritualistic expression of the idea immortalized by the poet, that a regeneration is at hand of Rome and Italy, in religion, morals, agriculture, government: old things are now to be put away, a new and glorious era is to open. Henceforward the Roman was to look ahead of him in hope and confidence, trusting in Augustus, the Aeneas of the actual State.
