Engineering schools play a key role in developing students' skills to appeal to an increasingly socially responsible job market. To do so, engineering educators must teach future professionals "social innovation skills": the ability to identify a community's social needs and transform this information into innovative technical solutions. This study explored to what extent do engineering students exhibit social innovation skills in an industry-driven capstone project in the program of civil engineering at a Midwestern research-intensive institution. A qualitative case study was used on a civil engineering capstone design class where data collection included interviews, document review, and thematic analysis. The results suggest new directions for future research, such as integrating community engagement and learning the structure of the government as platforms to facilitating social innovation skill learning among engineering students. I proposed the new concept of Engineering Social Innovation Skills: complex social problem solving, integrated skills to interact with communities, creativity to address social needs, and community-driven systems thinking. "Social impact" was found as a critical element to foster social innovation skill learning. This dissertation offers insights into potential curriculum improvement for engineering capstone classes and suggests new avenues for future research and career opportunities.

A new learning opportunity among civil engineering students is learning about urbanization in cities, which combines the sub-disciplines of civil engineering in a seamlessly interdisciplinary manner.  One of the greatest benefits of learning about a global phenomenon such as urbanization is introducing the opportunities to offer examples of the technological, cultural and social diversity surrounding the evolution of urban design, technologies and sustainable strategies from global cities. The ability to have a globally diverse classroom to bring in these perspectives and create a learning experience that captures this information sharing and exchange can be created through course design, learning activities, and assessments, hence the “global classroom.”  The authors present a case study of the global classroom for the online course “Sustainable Cities: Adding an African Perspective” and share their perspective on learner-driven formats that support the global classroom, which hinges upon students’ own interest and commitment to an online learning format.

The global economy brings about new trends, challenges, and needs, which require new solutions. Social innovations can have a major role in satisfying unmet social needs and increasing overall well-being. Measuring social innovation is therefore an important task with the purpose of informing the stakeholders about the performance value that an innovation creates. Standard accounting tools often neglect social or environmental impact, and thus, new or adjusted methods need to be developed. The objective of this chapter is to analyze methods of measuring social innovation and discuss advantages and disadvantages of traditional measures versus new approaches with the purpose of better understanding the significance of social innovation in the global economy. The chapter consists of six parts. After the introduction follows the literature review. The third part of the chapter discusses different approaches to measuring innovations while the fourth part suggests some new approaches to measuring social innovations. The fifth part describes future research perspectives. The final part is the conclusion.

In this introductory chapter, we present our understanding of the core concepts of this book, namely social innovation and poverty, and situate these concepts in contemporary debates on the governance of welfare provision. We define social innovation as actions that satisfy social needs through the transformation of social relations, which crucially implies an increase of the capabilities and access to resources of people living in poverty. Poverty is not reduced to a lack of monetary income, but refers to a range of processes of social exclusion in various spheres of life that hinders people’s full participation in society. We outline the aim of this book as a sustained attempt to analyse how the social innovation dynamics of localised initiatives are shaped by the welfare regime context with its specific spatial and institutional characteristics. Finally, we discuss the methodological strategy of the comparative case study research on which this book is based.

 Abstract – Engineering students are well equipped with a technical background to become agents of social change. This paper highlights a co-curricular social innovation program that aims to foster that potential through team-based project-based learning. Key teaching methods are described, such as how students establish a vision, scope complex projects, effectively build teams, and leverage failure and iteration for learning. The program faces challenges maintaining student engagement and getting them to fully embrace learning through failure, but has had significant success in fostering self-reflection. It has also been successful in creating a structure whereby personal and leadership learning happen alongside design and project-oriented learning. There is opportunity for the teaching methods and structure of this program to be applied to other contexts in an effort to improve student team learning outcomes and find ways to integrate leadership learning into core technical and design courses.

Purpose Cross-sector partnerships (CSPs) are one type of collective social enterprise that has gained importance as a vehicle for social innovation (SI). The purpose of this paper is to understand the sources of the competitive advantage of CSPs as a strategic option for SI. Design/methodology/approach The authors propose a conceptual framework that integrates two interrelated dimensions of CSP competitiveness – resources and coordination – and their corresponding indicators. Then, the authors apply it to an in-depth case study through qualitative enquiry of a large CSP in the field of work integration during its formation and implementation stages (2012–2016). The authors employ a case study design with process tracing methods for increased validity, analyzing structured data from multiple sources (documentary, in-depth interviews with field experts and key decision-makers in coordinating partner organizations, direct observations) through narrative and visual mapping strategies. Findings Results illustrate the dynamic interaction between the key dimensions and factors that shape the potential and limitations of CSPs for SI and evidence three types of tensions which management influences partnership outcomes: hierarchical/horizontal commitment; competition/collaboration; and managerial efficiency/social transformation. Originality/value This research highlights the pivotal role of product development for the organizing of SI in a CSP context and proposes a conceptual framework that paves the way for future research on the sources of competitive advantage of CSPs, facilitating the assessment of their performance in terms of socially innovative outcomes.

PT Sarana Jabar Venture (SJV) is the first regional venture capital company in Indonesia, which was established with the aim to foster small entrepreneurs through financing and management guidance. The financing of cooperation implemented on the basis of the principle of mutual strengthening, mutual need and mutual benefit. In addition to financing for small medium enterprises, SJV currently is running a program that is carried by the Medco Foundation IE is a Program of the national Sheep Fattening (Prodombas) and empower the Pesantren to carry the people's economy, one of which is Pesantren Al-Ittifaq. PT Sarana Jabar Ventura viewed from its objective, may be classified as Social Entrepreneur that describes all the economic program that serves the social and mission or mission environment and invested most of the anniversary surplusnya in support of its mission, provide social innovation how to solve social problems by creating breakthrough social problem solving with the advent of Prodombas. So, produce an effect known as social impact as the effects of what organizations are doing or action against social welfare organization. One of the tools for measuring the social impact is by using Social Return on Investment (SROI) the New Economics Foundation (NEF, 2008). This research has the end result of the ratio between the number of comparisons with a benefit that is formed with a given amount of investment, with the result that means 1.05:1 each Rp. 1 invested, yielding the value of social benefits in the form of Rp. 1.05 felt by program participants in Pesantren Al-ittifaq. Because the ratio of 1:1 which is the conditions exceeds successful SROI, then PT Sarana Jabar Ventura as an investor has successfully acted as agents of social reformers because it has given the social impact that bring benefit for participants in Pesantren Al-Ittifaq.

This chapter discusses the potential of social innovations as effective policies and actions to reduce poverty. Social innovations are driven by an unconventional mix of actors and apply multidimensional approaches to respond to social needs that are not adequately met by macro-level welfare policies. The chapter first gives a brief overview of the history of social innovation as an academic concept and an important concept in current European policies to combat poverty. It then turns to the implications of adopting a social innovation perspective for our understanding of poverty. We stress the multidimensional and relational character of poverty, highlight the importance of place-based developments and their multilevel governances, and point out the crucial role of participation and empowerment. Finally, we present preliminary lessons for anti-poverty strategies based on our extensive case-study analysis, stressing the important link to broader strategies to foster social cohesion, the value of bottom-linked approaches, and the importance of collective empowerment.
