AbstractWestern blotting (WB) is one of the most widely used techniques to identify proteins as well as post translational modifications of proteins. The selection of electroblotted membrane is one of the key factors affecting the detection sensitivity of the protein which is transferred from gel to membrane in WB. The most common used membranes are polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and nitrocellulose (NC) membranes. Which membrane of these two is more suitable for WB has not been reported so far. Here, by incubating proteins which were transferred to PVDF or NC membranes with a series of antibodies and different types of lectins, we investigated the relationship between the binding ability of these two membranes to proteins or glycoproteins and the molecular weight of the target protein. The antibody re-probed ability of the two membranes was also explored. Moreover, we verified the above results by directly incubating proteins having different molecular weights onto PVDF or NC membranes. Bound proteins were stained with direct blue-71, and the staining intensity was quantitated by scanning and densitometry.

The factors influencing the cationization of microcrystalline cellulose with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl triethylammonium chloride in the presence of NaOH were investigated. The course of the reaction was followed by estimating the nitrogen content of the cationized product while its structural features were confirmed by IR analysis. The ability of cationized cellulose to adsorb anionic dyes, viz. Acid Orange 7, Direct Blue 75 and Direct Violet 31, was investigated at 25°C and 50°C. The equilibrium data obtained were fitted by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, allowing the corresponding adsorption parameters to be determined. The results showed that the adsorption capacity was dependent on the adsorbent, temperature, the nature of the dye and (to some extent) on van der Waals and hydrogen bonding. Cationized cellulose exhibited a much better adsorption capacity towards anionic dyes than cellulose.

AbstractAminosilane modified silica was prepared and investigated for the adsorption of textile dyes such as C.I. Acid Orange 7 (AO7), C.I. Reactive Black 5 (RB5) and C.I. Direct Blue 71 (DB71) from aqueous media and wastewaters. The values of the sorption capacities obtained from the Langmuir isotherm model were: 5.3 mg g

A series of γ-alumina with different pore sizes (5.7 nm–21.6 nm) and similar specific surface areas were synthesized via an organic-free method and their adsorption rates and capacities for Congo red (CR), direct blue 78 (DB78) and direct green 26 (DG26) were investigated. The kinetics study reveals that the dye adsorptions of all γ-alumina samples fit the pseudo-2nd-order model. For CR, its k2 and the pore size of absorbent are in a linear relationship at low dye concentrations. Both of the experimental results and Langmuir isotherm calculation results suggest that the dye adsorption capacities of the γ-alumina prepared in our lab are much higher than those of other γ-alumina reported in literatures. GA-1 with the largest specific area of surface and largest size of pores exhibits a CR adsorption capacity up to 4213.6 mg/g. In addition, initial dye adsorption rates of the γ-alumina prepared in-house are much higher than that of the γ-alumina prepared with the commercially available alumina under the same conditions.
