Evaluation of the postural balance and visual perception in young adults with acute sleep deprivation

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Few studies have suggested a relationship between vestibular system and sleep deprivation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of acute sleep deprivation lasting 24 hours or more on the postural balance and the visual abilities related to the vestibular system in healthy young adults. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy young adults (8 males, 23 female; ages 18– 36 years) who had experienced at least 24 hours of sleep deprivation were included in the study. Subjects made two visits to the test laboratory. One visit was scheduled during a sleep deprivation (SD) condition, and the other was scheduled during a daily life (DL) condition. Five tests— the Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Static Visual Acuity Test (SVA), Minimum Perception Time Test (mPT), Dynamic Visual Acuity Test (DVA), and Gaze Stabilization Test (GST)— were performed using a Computerized Dynamic Posturography System. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was found between SD and DL measurements in somatosensorial (p = 0.003), visual (p = 0.037), vestibular (p = 0.008) ratios, and composite scores (p = 0.001) in SOT. The mPT results showed a statistically significant difference between SD and DL conditions (p = 0.001). No significant difference was found between SD and DL conditions in the comparison of the mean SVA (p = 0.466), DVA (p = 0.192), and GST head velocity values (p = 0.160). CONCLUSIONS: Sleep deprivation has a considerable impact on the vestibular system and visual perception time in young adults. Increased risk of accidents and performance loss after SD were thought to be due to the postural control and visual processing parameters rather than dynamic visual parameters of the vestibular system.

To evaluate the reliability and the validity of Landolt Rings and of the Frisby Test as measures of visual acuity and stereoacuity, respectively, the visual acuity of 30 mentally retarded children was measured with Landolt Rings shown as games, the Sjogren Test, the Dot Visual Acuity Test and stereoacuity with the Frisby Test. Subjects were tested 3 times over a period of 3 weeks to measure the reliability of the tests. No significant difference was observed among these tests. The validity of the Landolt Rings was measured by a correlation of .55 for the highest logMAR values of the Sjogren Test with the highest logMAR values of the Landolt Rings. Visual acuity was systematically lower on the Dot Visual Acuity Test. The Frisby Test was not reliable among a group of 16 normal children who improved systematically over 3 weeks.

Postural balance is influenced by alteration of somatosensory inputs. Sound and vibratory senses, one of several human senses may assist the postural control in a specific impaired situation. The aim of this pilot study was to quantify the effect of sound and vibration on postural balance in healthy young adults. Ten healthy young subjects volunteered to participate in the study. The average age, weight, height, and body mass index were 21.88 ± 0.42 years, 56.21 ± 9.80 kg, 159.75 ± 5.20 cm, and 21.99 ± 3.52 kg/m2. They were assessed for standing postural balance on a force plate over 6 conditions of sound and vibration applications under vision was excluded by using a blindfold. Postural balance variables consisted of planar deviation of Center of Pressure (CoP) and the maximum ranges of CoP in the medio-lateral (ML) and antero-posterior (AP) directions. Two-way ANOVA was used to find the effect and interaction effect of sound and vibration on the postural balance variables. Further analyses of the variables were performed on a basis of each factor. Between sound conditions (no sound and open sound), the variables were analyzed by the paired t-test. In addition, the effect of vibration (no vibration, vibration on quadriceps, and vibration on gastrocnemius) on the variables were analyzed by the one-way repeated measure ANOVA. Results demonstrated no interaction effect and main effect of sound and vibration on the postural balance variables (p > 0.05). In addtion, no significant difference of the postural balance variables between sound conditions (p > 0.05) as well as among vibration conditions (p > 0.05). In conclusion, sound and vibration did not effect to the postural balance during standing in healty young adults.

Abstract Introduction Recent literature highlights the need to focus on the impact of intrusive symptoms as a possible risk factor for the development and maintenance of PTSD. Cognitive and sleep models also contribute to the further understanding of intrusive symptoms. Further emotion work emphasizes that disgust is an emotion closely associated with the emergence of posttraumatic stress symptomology following traumatic events. Methods This study utilized a film eliciting disgust to examine the effects of acute sleep deprivation on the intensity of intrusive symptoms and emotion reactivity. Forty-nine college students were randomly assigned to sleep as usual or an acute sleep deprivation after watching a disturbing film. It was hypothesized that, relative to the control group, participants who were acutely sleep deprived would report higher frequency of intrusive symptoms and higher negative valence. Results Findings were partially consistent with hypotheses. There were no group or interaction effects on intrusive symptoms, although participants across both groups reported significant decreases in negative valence and intrusive symptoms across the study (F(1, 47) = 10.30, p < 0.01). There was a significant interaction effect between sleep group and self-reported negative valence, where individuals in the sleep deprived group reported significantly higher valence than individuals in the control group, despite significant decreases in negative valence over time (F(1, 48) = 7.869, p < 0.01). Conclusion Possible mechanisms that may contribute to the significant difference in valence may be due to higher order emotion regulation strategies that are compromised due to sleep loss. However, the significant decreases in negative valence and intrusive symptoms over time may be due to methodological factors or the type of sleep manipulation. Further work can address these challenges by using a larger sample size or examining the effects of chronic, partial sleep deprivation. Support (if any):

Objective. To establish an automated visual acuity test (AVAT) for infants, based on preferential looking technique and controlled with remote eye tracking. To validate the AVAT in a group of healthy children. To compare AVAT visual acuity (VA) values with corresponding VA values, acquired with standard tests (ST). Methods. ST, adapted for age (Keeler acuity cards in preverbal children, LEA symbols in verbal children), was performed to obtain monocular VA in a group of 36 healthy children. During AVAT, nine different stimuli with grating circles that matched spatial frequencies of nine Keeler acuity cards (raging between 0.29–14.5 cycles per degree) were projected on a screen. Three repetitions of each stimulus were showed during nine-second intervals, interchanging with an attention grabber. The remote eye tracker was used to evaluate the proportion of time a child spent looking at each grating circle compared to a homogenous grey background that matched the grating stimuli in average luminance. From this proportion of time child's binocular VA was evaluated. Results. 97 % (35/36) of healthy children successfully completed ST and AVAT. There was an agreement between the results of a ST and AVAT, Lin’s concordance coefficient being 0,53 (95% CI= 0,31–0,72). A tendency was observed towards VA overestimation on AVAT for children with VA> 0.4 logMAR on ST and towards VA underestimation on AVAT for children with VA ≤ 0.4 logMAR on ST. Conclusions. AVAT requires a minimally skilled investigator. The evaluation of better eye monocular VA on ST and binocular VA on AVAT were comparable for healthy children.
