BACKGOROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular disorders are increasing because of poor eating habits, excessive drinking, and lack of exercise. Some of the typical cardiovascular surgical procedures utilize catheters. Catheter-based procedures require the surgeons to have extensive experience and high proficiency at performing vascular interventions. However, the learning period to acquire such proficiency is lengthy and the opportunities for practical training and mastery are insufficient. Therefore, due to insufficient skill, dangerous situations with damage or rupture of the patient’s blood vessels may occur, thereby increasing the risk of medical accidents. Hence, it is necessary to have experience and proficiency for performing vascular interventions. Thus, it is necessary to develop a simulator to shorten learning time and reduce medical accidents. METHODS: In this study, we developed a position detection system for the simulator to use physical models to learn cardiovascular surgical intervention techniques. The developed system uses changes in the output values of a Hall sensor based on the position of a permanent magnet. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: From the changing output values, the distance calculation equation is derived, and the position of the permanent magnet is effectively estimated from the calculations. The performance of the position detecting system was tested, and the results proved that the system could be sufficiently used as a simulator.

A real-time position detection system is developed for measuring heavy ions with low fluence and energy of several hundred MeV, which are generated from an azimuthally varying field (AVF) cyclotron accelerator. We investigate the photoluminescence of α-Al2O3 single crystals implanted with Eu (Al2O3:Eu), which is used in the detection system. The Al2O3:Eu scintillators with a fluence of 3.0 × 1016 cm−2 are annealed at 500–900°C. The annealing conditions required for the Al2O3:Eu scintillators to obtain the maximum luminescence are 0.5 h at 600°C. The scintillator is placed on the AVF cyclotron target stage under atmospheric pressure and is irradiated by 260-MeV Ne. An inverted confocal microscope with a ×10 objective lens is positioned behind the Al2O3:Eu scintillator, and the luminescent images during ion irradiation are obtained by a position-sensitive camera unit with a 512 × 512 pixel electron multiplying charge-coupled device. The images indicate that our online measurement system has a sufficient spatial resolution, since the luminous diameter induced by irradiation with 190 ions /s is almost the same as that of the microbeam.

Web-core sandwich panels are a typical lightweight structure utilized in a variety of fields, such as naval, aviation, aerospace, etc. Welding is considered as an effective process to join the face panel to the core panel from the face panel side. However, it is difficult to locate the joint position (i.e., the position of core panel) due to the shielding of the face panel. This paper studies a weld position detection method based on X-ray from the face panel side for aluminum web-core sandwich panels used in aviation and naval structures. First, an experimental system was designed for weld position detection, able to quickly acquire the X-ray intensity signal backscattered by the specimen. An effective signal processing method was developed to accurately extract the characteristic value of X-ray intensity signals representing the center of the joint. Secondly, an analytical model was established to calculate and optimize the detection parameters required for detection of the weld position of a given specimen by analyzing the relationship between the backscattered X-ray intensity signal detected by the detector and the parameters of the detection system and specimen during the detection process. Finally, several experiments were carried out on a 6061 aluminum alloy specimen with a thickness of 3 mm. The experimental results demonstrate that the maximum absolute error of the detection was 0.340 mm, which is sufficiently accurate for locating the position of the joint. This paper aims to provide the technical basis for the automatic tracking of weld joints from the face panel side, required for the high-reliability manufacturing of curved sandwich structures.

Abstract MIWOCA study group Background The project MIWOCA researches how chronically ill women of Portuguese, Turkish and German origin and women without a migration background subjectively experience, understand, interpret and use the Swiss health care system. Methods We conducted 48 qualitative semi-structured interviews with chronically ill women between the ages of 23 and 85 in Bern and Geneva (n = 36 with German, Portuguese and Turkish migrant backgrounds) and n = 12 Swiss women. In addition, n = 12 stakeholder interviews were conducted (doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, physiotherapists). In focus groups with interviewed women in Bern and Geneva, results are reflected back, identified topics from the interviews prioritized and representatives named for the cooperative planning. In a participatory planning approach, affected women in the canton of Bern, together with stakeholders from the Swiss healthcare system selected by a systematic stakeholder analysis (e.g. Swiss Medical Association, Red Cross Switzerland, Spitex, Federal Office of Public Health), develop recommendations for improving the quality of care and concrete dissemination strategies. Results Interviewees had multiple and chronic diseases and resulting extensive experience with the Swiss healthcare system. Relevant aspects referred to issues such as quality of specific services, complexity of the healthcare system, costs of care, role of family and social support, and multidimensional stigmatization (migration, chronic illness, alleged overuse of the care system). Findings are incorporated in evidence briefs and narrative stories for focus groups and participatory planning. Conclusions MIWOCA contributes to a targeted and differentiated improvement of structures and options for action in health care for specific groups. Results will be relevant for planning in the health system and may be incorporated into academic teaching and practical training in PH, medicine and social sciences.
