Infusing autonomous artificial systems with knowledge about the physical world they inhabit is of utmost importance and a long-lasting goal in Artificial Intelligence (AI) research. Training systems with relevant data is a common approach; yet, it is not always feasible to find the data needed, especially since a big portion of this knowledge is commonsense. In this paper, we propose a novel method for extracting and evaluating relations between objects and actions from knowledge graphs, such as ConceptNet and WordNet. We present a complete methodology of locating, enriching, evaluating, cleaning and exposing knowledge from such resources, taking into consideration semantic similarity methods. One important aspect of our method is the flexibility in deciding how to deal with the noise that exists in the data. We compare our method with typical approaches found in the relevant literature, such as methods that exploit the topology or the semantic information in a knowledge graph, and embeddings. We test the performance of these methods on the Something-Something Dataset.

Despite the development of various technologies and systems using artificial intelligence (AI) to solve problems related to disasters, difficult challenges are still being encountered. Data are the foundation to solving diverse disaster problems using AI, big data analysis, and so on. Therefore, we must focus on these various data. Disaster data depend on the domain by disaster type and include heterogeneous data and lack interoperability. In particular, in the case of open data related to disasters, there are several issues, where the source and format of data are different because various data are collected by different organizations. Moreover, the vocabularies used for each domain are inconsistent. This study proposes a knowledge graph to resolve the heterogeneity among various disaster data and provide interoperability among domains. Among disaster domains, we describe the knowledge graph for flooding disasters using Korean open datasets and cross-domain knowledge graphs. Furthermore, the proposed knowledge graph is used to assist, solve, and manage disaster problems.

With the continuous development of intelligent technologies, knowledge graph, the backbone of artificial intelligence, has attracted much attention from both academic and industrial communities due to its powerful capability of knowledge representation and reasoning. In recent years, knowledge graph has been widely applied in different kinds of applications, such as semantic search, question answering, knowledge management and so on. Techniques for building Chinese knowledge graphs are also developing rapidly and different Chinese knowledge graphs have been constructed to support various applications. Under the background of the “One Belt One Road (OBOR)” initiative, cooperating with the countries along OBOR on studying knowledge graph techniques and applications will greatly promote the development of artificial intelligence. At the same time, the accumulated experience of China in developing knowledge graphs is also a good reference to develop non-English knowledge graphs. In this paper, we aim to introduce the techniques of constructing Chinese knowledge graphs and their applications, as well as analyse the impact of knowledge graph on OBOR. We first describe the background of OBOR, and then introduce the concept and development history of knowledge graph and typical Chinese knowledge graphs. Afterwards, we present the details of techniques for constructing Chinese knowledge graphs, and demonstrate several applications of Chinese knowledge graphs. Finally, we list some examples to explain the potential impacts of knowledge graph on OBOR.

Aiming to solve the problem of environmental information being difficult to characterize when an intelligent service is used, knowledge graphs are used to express environmental information when performing intelligent services. Here, we specially design a kind of knowledge graph for environment expression referred to as a robot knowledge graph (R-KG). The main work of a R-KG is to integrate the diverse semantic information in the environment and pay attention to the relationship at the instance level. Also, through the efficient knowledge organization of a R-KG, robots can fully understand the environment. The R-KG firstly integrates knowledge from different sources to form a unified and standardized representation of a knowledge graph. Then, the deep logical relationship hidden in the knowledge graph is explored. To this end, a knowledge reasoning model based on a Markov logic network is proposed to realize the self-developmental ability of the knowledge graph and to further enrich it. Finally, as the strength of environment expression directly affects the efficiency of robots performing services, in order to verify the efficiency of the R-KG, it is used here as the semantic map that can be directly used by a robot for performing intelligent services. The final results prove that the R-KG can effectively express environmental information.

Abstract An increasing number of researchers rely on computational methods to generate or manipulate the results described in their scientific publications. Software created to this end—scientific software—is key to understanding, reproducing, and reusing existing work in many disciplines, ranging from Geosciences to Astronomy or Artificial Intelligence. However, scientific software is usually challenging to find, set up, and compare to similar software due to its disconnected documentation (dispersed in manuals, readme files, web sites, and code comments) and the lack of structured metadata to describe it. As a result, researchers have to manually inspect existing tools in order to understand their differences and incorporate them into their work. This approach scales poorly with the number of publications and tools made available every year. In this paper we address these issues by introducing a framework for automatically extracting scientific software metadata from its documentation (in particular, their readme files); a methodology for structuring the extracted metadata in a Knowledge Graph (KG) of scientific software; and an exploitation framework for browsing and comparing the contents of the generated KG. We demonstrate our approach by creating a KG with metadata from over ten thousand scientific software entries from public code repositories.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is currently hailed as a ‘solution’ to perceived problems in education. Though few sociologists of education would agree with its deterministic claims, this AI solutionist thinking is gaining significant currency. In this article, using a relatively novel method for sociology – a knowledge graph – together with Bourdieusean theory, we critically examine how and why different stakeholders in education, educational technology and policy are valorising AI, the main concepts, such as personalisation, they collectively endorse and their incentives for doing so. Drawing on this analysis, we argue that AI is currently being mobilised in education in problematic ways and advocate for more systematic sociological thinking and research to re-orientate the field to account for society’s structural conditions.

Abstract Background Knowledge graphs (KGs), especially medical knowledge graphs, are often significantly incomplete, so it necessitating a demand for medical knowledge graph completion (MedKGC). MedKGC can find new facts based on the existed knowledge in the KGs. The path-based knowledge reasoning algorithm is one of the most important approaches to this task. This type of method has received great attention in recent years because of its high performance and interpretability. In fact, traditional methods such as path ranking algorithm take the paths between an entity pair as atomic features. However, the medical KGs are very sparse, which makes it difficult to model effective semantic representation for extremely sparse path features. The sparsity in the medical KGs is mainly reflected in the long-tailed distribution of entities and paths. Previous methods merely consider the context structure in the paths of knowledge graph and ignore the textual semantics of the symbols in the path. Therefore, their performance cannot be further improved due to the two aspects of entity sparseness and path sparseness. Methods To address the above issues, this paper proposes two novel path-based reasoning methods to solve the sparsity issues of entity and path respectively, which adopts the textual semantic information of entities and paths for MedKGC. By using the pre-trained model BERT, combining the textual semantic representations of the entities and the relationships, we model the task of symbolic reasoning in the medical KG as a numerical computing issue in textual semantic representation. Results Experiments results on the publicly authoritative Chinese symptom knowledge graph demonstrated that the proposed method is significantly better than the state-of-the-art path-based knowledge graph reasoning methods, and the average performance is improved by 5.83% for all relations. Conclusions In this paper, we propose two new knowledge graph reasoning algorithms, which adopt textual semantic information of entities and paths and can effectively alleviate the sparsity problem of entities and paths in the MedKGC. As far as we know, it is the first method to use pre-trained language models and text path representations for medical knowledge reasoning. Our method can complete the impaired symptom knowledge graph in an interpretable way, and it outperforms the state-of-the-art path-based reasoning methods.

Abstract Background In recent years, biomedical ontologies have become important for describing existing biological knowledge in the form of knowledge graphs. Data mining approaches that work with knowledge graphs have been proposed, but they are based on vector representations that do not capture the full underlying semantics. An alternative is to use machine learning approaches that explore semantic similarity. However, since ontologies can model multiple perspectives, semantic similarity computations for a given learning task need to be fine-tuned to account for this. Obtaining the best combination of semantic similarity aspects for each learning task is not trivial and typically depends on expert knowledge. Results We have developed a novel approach, evoKGsim, that applies Genetic Programming over a set of semantic similarity features, each based on a semantic aspect of the data, to obtain the best combination for a given supervised learning task. The approach was evaluated on several benchmark datasets for protein-protein interaction prediction using the Gene Ontology as the knowledge graph to support semantic similarity, and it outperformed competing strategies, including manually selected combinations of semantic aspects emulating expert knowledge. evoKGsim was also able to learn species-agnostic models with different combinations of species for training and testing, effectively addressing the limitations of predicting protein-protein interactions for species with fewer known interactions. Conclusions evoKGsim can overcome one of the limitations in knowledge graph-based semantic similarity applications: the need to expertly select which aspects should be taken into account for a given application. Applying this methodology to protein-protein interaction prediction proved successful, paving the way to broader applications.

In many areas, vast amounts of information are rapidly accumulating in the form of ontology-based knowledge graphs, and the use of information in these forms of knowledge graphs is becoming increasingly important. This study proposes a novel method for efficiently learning frequent subgraphs (i.e., knowledge) from ontology-based graph data. An ontology-based large-scale graph is decomposed into small unit subgraphs, which are used as the unit to calculate the frequency of the subgraph. The frequent subgraphs are extracted through candidate generation and chunking processes. To verify the usefulness of the extracted frequent subgraphs, the methodology was applied to movie rating prediction. Using the frequent subgraphs as user profiles, the graph similarity between the rating graph and new item graph was calculated to predict the rating. The MovieLens dataset was used for the experiment, and a comparison showed that the proposed method outperformed other widely used recommendation methods. This study is meaningful in that it proposed an efficient method for extracting frequent subgraphs while maintaining semantic information and considering scalability in large-scale graphs. Furthermore, the proposed method can provide results that include semantic information to serve as a logical basis for rating prediction or recommendation, which existing methods are unable to provide.

Numeric values associated to edges of a knowledge graph have been used to represent uncertainty, edge importance, and even out-of-band knowledge in a growing number of scenarios, ranging from genetic data to social networks. Nevertheless, traditional knowledge graph embedding models are not designed to capture such information, to the detriment of predictive power. We propose a novel method that injects numeric edge attributes into the scoring layer of a traditional knowledge graph embedding architecture. Experiments with publicly available numeric-enriched knowledge graphs show that our method outperforms traditional numeric-unaware baselines as well as the recent UKGE model.

Knowledge graph-based data integration is a practical methodology for heterogeneous legacy database-integrated service construction. However, it is neither efficient nor economical to build a new cross-domain knowledge graph on top of the schemas of each legacy database for the specific integration application rather than reusing the existing high-quality knowledge graphs. Consequently, a question arises as to whether the existing knowledge graph is compatible with cross-domain queries and with heterogenous schemas of the legacy systems. An effective criterion is urgently needed in order to evaluate such compatibility as it limits the quality upbound of the integration. This research studies the semantic similarity of the schemas from the aspect of properties. It provides a set of in-depth criteria, namely coverage and flexibility, to evaluate the pairwise compatibility between the schemas. It takes advantage of the properties of knowledge graphs to evaluate the overlaps between schemas and defines the weights of entity types in order to perform precise compatibility computation. The effectiveness of the criteria obtained to evaluate the compatibility between knowledge graphs and cross-domain queries is demonstrated using a case study.
