Sustainable supplier selection by using spherical fuzzy AHP

In today’s highly competitive business market, the issue of sustainable supplier selection attracts great attention due to increased awareness of both social and environmental issues. The power of companies in the supply chain is determined not only by their own performance, but also by the power of other actors in the chain. As a field of study, the selection of sustainable suppliers remains its popularity because it requires developing a systematic procedure that addresses conflicting quantifiable and non-quantifiable factors simultaneously. In this study, one of the advanced fuzzy approaches called Spherical Fuzzy Sets (SFS) has been used to prioritize criteria that affect sustainable supplier selection. The proposed methodology combines the Spherical Fuzzy Sets and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and takes into account four main criteria: economic, quality, social and environmental criteria. In order to prioritize the main and sub criteria, questionnaires were conducted with three experts who have valuable experience in this field of study. After then, for the selection of the best sustainable supplier, a real selection problem in an international company was handled. The figured out ranking of the criteria and supplier alternatives can be used as a guide by the researchers and industrial experts who are responsible for sustainable supplier selection. To measure how much unit increase in weights assigned to key criteria affects supplier selection, a sensitivity analysis was carried out. It was noticed that the selection procedure for the selected company is not highly sensitive to changes.

In the past few decades, there has been lot of focus on the issue of sustainability. This has occurred due to the growing concerns related to climate change and the growing awareness about environmental concerns. Also, the competition at global level has led to the search for the most sustainable route in the industries. The current research work deals with the selection of green supplier in a Nickle coating industry based on certain weighted green attributes. For this purpose, a hybrid tool comprising of Fuzzy AHP (Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy) and VIKOR (VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) is used. The Fuzzy AHP is used for assigning proper weights to the selected criteria for supplier evaluation, while VIKOR is used for final supplier selection based on the weighted criteria. The three criterions for green supplier selection are, Ecological packaging, Corporate socio-environmental responsibility and Staff Training. The outcome of the integrated model may serve as a steppingstone to other SMEs in different sectors for selecting the most suitable supplier for addressing the sustainability issue.

PurposeDue to stern management policies and increased community attentiveness, sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) performs a vast component in endeavor operation and production management. Sustainable circular supplier selection (SCSS) and evaluation presented the environmental and social concerns in the fields of circular economy and sustainable supplier selection. Choosing the optimal SCSS is vital for organizations to persuade SSCM, as specified in various researches. Based on the subjectivity of human behavior, the selection of ideal SCSS often involves uncertain information, and the Pythagorean fuzzy sets (PFSs) have a huge capability to tackle strong vagueness, uncertainty and inaccuracy in the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) procedure. Here, a framework is developed to assess and establish suitable suppliers in the SSCM and the circular economy.Design/methodology/approachThis paper introduced an extended framework using the evaluation based on distance from average solution (EDAS) with PFSs and implemented it to solve the SCSS in the manufacturing sector. Firstly, the PFSs to handle the uncertain information of decision experts (DEs) is employed. Secondly, a novel divergence measure and parametric score function for calculating the criteria weights are proposed. Thirdly, an extended decision-making approach, known as PF-EDAS, is introduced.FindingsThe outcomes and comparative discussion show that the developed method is efficient and capable of facilitating the DEs to choose desirable SCSS. Therefore, the proposed framework can be used by organizations to assess and establish suitable suppliers in the SCSS process in the circular economy.Originality/valueSelecting the optimal sustainable circular supplier (SCS) in the manufacturing sector is important for organizations to persuade SSCM, as specified in various research. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the influencing factors and special features of cement concrete pavement overlaying technology, a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model is constructed for the comparison and selection of overlaying schemes. At first, the numerical weight for each criterion of the hierarchy is derived and tested. Then the feature matrices of all the schemes are constructed based on experts’ evaluation. The optimal scheme is chosen according to the numerical priorities of each scheme yielded by fuzzy calculation.

The supply chain is an important element for the development of all industries. It can improve efficiency and effectiveness of product transfer and information sharing between complex hierarchies of all the tiers. Supplier selection is an important step in the supply chain design. In many existing decision models for supplier selection, only quantitative criteria are considered. However, supplier selection is a multi-objective problem containing quantitative as well as qualitative factors. Hence, this paper attempts to demonstrate the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to overcome the above-mentioned problem. From an extensive analysis of the results, it is evident that selection of an appropriate supplier would result in improving effectiveness of supply chain.

In this paper, the application of the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP) combined with a set of criteria analysis for the selection of appropriate sites for the development offshore wind energy in Taiwan is presented. The Fuzzy AHP was first conducted to rank the importance and identify the key factors of offshore wind energy successfully. From the numerical results, eight key factors that must be considered in the site selection of offshore wind energy system in Taiwan were obtained by using Fuzzy AHP model. They are: wind power, earthquakes, land use, shore type, typhoon, distance to shoreline, flight safety and water depth. Based on these factors, a set of criteria for the selection of sites for offshore wind farms was also established using five different sites in Taiwan. From the assessment results, it was found that Changhua coastal region is an appropriate site for offshore wind energy in Taiwan.

Sustainability in industrial organizations has become a predominant concept in the 21st century due to environmental regulations, economic importance, and social obligations. In this context, sustainable supplier selection plays an epochal role for taking strategic business decisions. So, a systematic approach is required to deal with the sustainable factors. By integrating the three pillars of sustainability, namely economic, environmental, and social factors, this chapter presents an integrated model for supplier selection from a sustainability perspective. The proposed framework combines analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and quality function deployment (QFD) methods to deal with the sustainable criteria. Finally, suppliers are ranked using VIse Kriterijumska Optimizacija kompromisno Resenja (VIKOR) method. The proposed framework is used to analyze a case study of a dairy company, but it can also be implemented for sustainable supplier selection in any industries. The study brings an artefact for managers to effectively analyze suppliers with the integrated decision-making model.

Supplier selection is a multi-criteria decision making problem which includes evaluation factors. In order to select the best suppliers, it is crucial to considering the both qualitative and quantitative factors simultaneously. The analytic hierarchy Process is a kind of Decision-making method with the combination of quantity and quality. Combining with fuzzy algorithm, this paper established a supplier evaluating system based on ERP database, discussing many issues in the systematic design and developing the implement step. The system make the evaluation process transparent by using data mining and fuzzy-AHP algorithm, and avoid the disturbing from excessively subjective factors. Thus it can guarantee the fairness of the assessment. Finally, the example and conclusion are given.

A buying decision process is one of the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problems faced by everyone in daily life. One example is the selection of smartphones brand in the market. Thus, the study is conducted to evaluate the most effective criteria for buying smartphones and to rank the people's preferences on smartphone based on its brand. Six criteria (price, operating system, memory, display, camera and battery) and three alternatives which are the smartphone brands (Oppo, Samsung and Apple) were chosen in the study. Two main processes were involved, which are 1) evaluate the smartphone criteria using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and 2) ranking the brand using Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE). Surveys and questionnaires were conducted and evaluated by decision makers who are the smartphone's users. The result showed storage memory is considered as prominent criteria in choosing a smartphone meanwhile the consumers firstly prefer Oppo, secondly Apple and thirdly Samsung. Future work in this study may use other alternatives to be ranked by considering other top models as well.
