Robots and digital agents find their way in an increasing number of areas in our everyday lives. In this paper we look at the history of coaching devices and their impact on our health and lifestyle, as well as the emergence of coaching robots. We explore the worry that a growing entanglement with coaching technology that quantify our lives may reduce or invalidate the user’s personal experiences and preferences. We propose that the kind of bond that should be formed between user and technology is one that engenders trust while maintaining contextual and user-focused perspectives, in order to preserve personal values and autonomy, as well as the possibility of coaching robots being able to provide these kinds of bonding interactions.

Anderson, D. W. and Smith, C. A. S. 2011. A history of soil classification and soil survey in Canada: Personal perspectives. Can. J. Soil Sci. 91: 675–694. This paper presents an overview of soil classification and soil survey in Canada based on both historical documentation and the personal experiences and perspectives of the two authors. The first soil surveys in Canada beginning in Ontario in 1914 are described along with the earliest systems of soil classification. The roots of the current system of soil classification in Canada can be traced back to the establishment of the first meeting of the National Soil Survey Committee (later the Canada Soil Survey Committee) held in Ottawa in 1945. The Committee met every 2 to 3 years and a hard-cover “first” edition, “The Canadian System of Soil Classification” was published in 1978 and a slightly revised second edition in 1987. The third edition (1998) includes a more complete key and a tenth order, the Vertisolic Order. The four to five decades starting in the late 1940s were the glory years for soil survey in Canada, with well-funded and productive programs in all provinces and territories, with major outputs like the Canada Land Inventory. The period between mid 1990s and 2010 saw declining activity in new field survey and reductions in staff levels by government agencies, but a rise in private sector soil survey, largely for environmental assessment purposes. There is a renewed and on-going interest in and need for soil information. The challenge for pedologists is to provide reliable information in innovative and proactive ways.

This paper reviews the history of the optoelectric devices applied to biomedical sciences in 20th century. It describes history of Vacuum tubes and Spectroscopies with the author's personal experiences, especially doublebeam spectroscopy. Further, the present developments of Near Infra Red (NIR) devices are described in translational biomedical applications. It includes particulary micro optoelectronics developments and present status of NIR breast cancer detection. Lastly, intrinsic molecular biomarkers are discussed especially NIR measurements of angiogenensis, hypermetabolism and heat production for cancer detection.

The history of relations of the Sheptytskyj family and the Jewish people reaches back to those remote times when the representatives of the Sheptytskyi lineage held high and honorable secular and clerical posts, and the Jews, either upon invitation of King Danylo of Halych or King Casimir the Great, began to build up their own world in Halychyna. Throughout the whole life of Metropolitan Sheptytskyi and Blessed Martyr Klymentii, a thread of cooperation with the Jews is traceable. It should be noted that heroic deeds of the Sheptytskyi Brothers to save Jews during the Second World War were not purely circumstantial: they were preceded by a long-standing deep relationship with representatives of Jewish culture. In addition, the sense of responsibility of the Spiritual Pastor, as advocated by the Brothers, extended to all people of different religions and genesis with no exception. The world-view principles of Metropolitan Sheptytskyi are important for us in order to understand what was going on in the then society in attitude to the Jews. Also, of importance is the influence of the Metropolitan on Kasymyr Sheptytskyi, later Fr. Klymentii, because the Archbishop was not only his Brother, but also a church authority and the leader. And if from under the Metropolitan Sheptytskyi’s pen letters and pastorals were published, they were directives, instructions, edifications and explanations for the faithful and the clergy, and not at all, the products of His own reflections or personal experiences, which Archbishop Andrey wanted to share with the faithful. On the grounds of the available archive materials, an effort to reconstruct the chief moments of those relations was undertaken, aiming among others, to illustrate the fact that the saving of Jews during the Holocaust was not incidental, nor with any underlying reasons behind, but a natural manifestation of a good Christian tradition of «Love thy Neighbor», to which the Sheptytskyj were faithful. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious, chronic, progressive cardiopulmonary disease. PAH is associated with several concomitant conditions, as well as drugs and toxins.12 Methamphetamine abuse is likely associated with the development of PAH.3 Methamphetamine abuse is epidemic in the United States and abroad, with rates of new users escalating since 2012. There are over 100,000 new users annually as young as 12 years old. Treating a patient with a history of methamphetamine abuse poses many challenges for a clinician, including nonadherence, therapeutic treatment selection, complex psychosocial issues, and relapse or continued drug abuse. Patients with methamphetamine-associated PAH (Meth-APAH) have higher mortality rates when compared to idiopathic PAH.3 Having a better understanding of the complexities of addiction and working with a multidisciplinary team that includes a social worker to provide care and counseling to these patients can improve their trajectory. In this article, we will offer insight and background into methamphetamine abuse and addiction, as well as discuss a practical approach for clinicians in treating a patient with Meth-APAH, based on the literature, as well as our personal experiences at University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.

A young Virginia Stephen describes the rustic beauty of Salisbury plain and its surroundings (including Stonehenge) in an early voicing of Englishness in the 1903 journal. Three years later, Virginia visits Greece and Turkey, where she begins to contrast that developing sense of Englishness with other nationalisms (German, Greek and Turkish), both resisting and appropriating the language of the tourist. In addition to helping her formulate a sense of national identity, as a woman and a writer, these trips share another aspect: they are suffused by personal experiences of loss (Leslie Stephen’s declining health and death, and Thoby’s sudden death from typhoid). A similar weaving of personal loss with issues of national identity can be detected in her diary during her second journey to Greece in the company of Leonard, Roger and Margery Fry in 1932, prompted by the deaths of Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington, and her return to the English countryside. This paper explores the relation that these specific journeys, 30 years apart, have to Woolf’s developing sense of tradition, history, and western civilization, and her own place as a writer. The interweaving of the rustic – peasants, common people, villages and natural places – with the history of ideas allows Woolf to reimagine the legacy of heritage for her dramatically changing times. That heritage, intimately bound up with death – whether neutralized as an ancestral past or bearing the sting of the lived present – shapes the way Woolf engages with memory, beauty, and the contemporary role of the English writer.

Understanding gangs and schools requires us to go beyond neighborhood-level analysis because spatial analyses tend to downplay or ignore social movements as key to fundamental change. This article supplements a traditional ecological approach with an institutional analysis of both schools and gangs. A history of Chicago gangs reveals that gangs are not one thing; at times they have played positive roles within schools and taken part in social movements. The author’s personal experiences with gangs and schools in Milwaukee and Chicago are presented as evidence documenting the mutability of gangs, the damaging consequences of some educational policies, and the importance of including gang members in social movements. The current Black Lives Matter movement presents opportunities for nonincremental, disruptive change and the potential inclusion of gangs and gang members in a broader strategy to create a better society.

The psychological functioning and abuse history of 23 sexual, 51 violent, and 79 property adolescent offenders were compared. Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scores of these three groups did not differ although sexual offenders were twice as likely to have a history of sexual abuse, making those personal experiences more relevant to the form of their criminal behavior.

This paper proposes a personal values-based user modeling method from user’s browsing history of reviews. Personal values-based user modeling and its application to recommender systems have been studied. This approach models users’ personal values as the effect of item’s attributes on their decision making. While existing method obtains a user model from reviews posted by a user, this paper proposes to obtain it from reviews a user consulted for his/her decision making. Methods for determining reviews to present for obtaining user feedback, as well as for selecting items to recommend are proposed, of which effectiveness are shown with user experiments.

This study focuses on the graphic imagery of tattoo artists in KwaZulu-­‐Natal with special reference to the Ramesar brothers. Various visual communication practices and theories are drawn upon to explain the imagery created by them. The literature review chapters of this study cover a brief history of primarily Western tattooing practices, as well as a discussion of the meaning of tattoos from a visual semiotics perspective. The fieldwork component of the study involved conducting and analysing a series of qualitative in-­‐depth interviews with interviewees who were either tattooed by, or are family members of, the Ramesar brothers. The purpose of the interviews was to explore the personal experiences and motivations that contributed to the work of these tattoo artists. The study contributes to visual studies in South Africa in the sense that the empirical data confirm the pioneer status of the Ramesar brothers as graphic artists.
