Objective Bariatric surgery has become the most effective treatment for morbid obesity. Increasing evidence showed that bariatric surgery can alleviate insulin resistance and influence thyroid function. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between changes in thyroid function and adipose tissue insulin resistance (adipo-IR) after bariatric surgery. Methods A total of 287 non-diabetic participants with regular thyroid function were recruited and divided into the lean, overweight and obese groups. Among them, 50 morbidly obese patients submitted to bariatric surgery. Results The obese group had a higher level of adipo-IR, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free triiodothyronine (FT3), FT3/free thyroxine (FT4) and metabolism disorders than the lean and overweight groups. BMI was correlated with TSH, FT3, FT3/FT4 and adipo-IR (r = 0.309, 0.315, 0.322 and 0.651, respectively, all P < 0.001). Adipo-IR was significantly correlated with TSH (r = 0.402, P < 0.001), FT3 (r = 0.309, P < 0.001), and FT3/FT4 (r = 0.228, P < 0.05). Bariatric surgery resulted in a sharp decline in BMI, adipo-IR, TSH, FT3 and FT3/FT4 levels, meanwhile, metabolic disorders improved. The decrease in BMI after bariatric surgery was significantly correlated with reductions in adipo-IR (r = 0.577, P < 0.001) and TSH (r = 0.401, P = 0.005). Interestingly, the fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, adipo-IR and TSH in the higher TSH group decreased more remarkably than in the lower TSH group. Conclusion Obese individuals with higher TSH levels had an obvious metabolic improvement after bariatric surgery.

The apparent viscosity and rheological behavior of nanoSiCP/Al-5Cu composites were studied by using a high temperature coaxial rotating cylinder viscometer. The results show that mass fraction of nanoSiCP is an important factor for apparent viscosity of the nanoSiCP/Al-5Cu composites, and there is a great enhancement of apparent viscosity of the slurry with the increase of nanoSiCp content. It can attribute to the viscous force between nanoSiCp and matrix alloy melt above the liquidus. The increased amplitude of apparent viscosity in semi-solid state is far less than those in liquid state with the increase of mass fraction of nanoSiCp. The apparent viscosities of the composites reinforced with 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% nanoSiCp at 700°C were 24.78%, 95.25%, 160.29% and 228.62% higher than that of Al-5Cu alloy, respectively. Besides, the rheological model of nanoSiCP/Al-5Cu composites was established based on the fitting curve, which can precisely describe the relationship between the apparent viscosity of nanocomposites slurry and nanoSiCp mass fraction.

Hydrogels have gained a lot of attention with their widespread use in different industrial applications. The versatility in the synthesis and the nature of the precursor reactants allow for a varying range of hydrogels with different mechanical and rheological properties. Understanding of the rheological behavior and the relationship between the chemical structure and the resulting properties is crucial, and is the focus of this review. Specifically, we include detailed discussion on the correlation between the rheological characteristics of hydrogels and their possible applications. Different rheological tests such as time, temperature and frequency sweep, among others, are described and the results of those tests are reported. The most prevalent applications of hydrogels are also discussed.

Chemerin is a relatively novel adipokine with controversial pathophysiological role in obesity. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship of serum chemerin level with inflammation, oxidative stress and insulin resistance in morbidly obese subjects. Circulating chemerin was an independent predictor of TNF-Q level, superoxide dismutase activity and lipid peroxidation, but no relation with insulin resistance could be sustained. Taken together chemerin could be a marker of dysfunctional adipose tissue, but its serum level does not reflect properly the metabolic phenotype in morbid obesity.

Introduction: Although BMI contributes to increased levels of adipokines, such as leptin, and tumor necrosis factor (TNFα) and to a decrease in adiponectin, few studies have examined the association between leptin, TNFα and body mass index (BMI) in Appalachian females. Methods: A total of 74 subjects from the Appalachian region were examined for the effect of BMI on the levels of leptin, TNF α , and adiponectin. Patients without overt cardiovascular disease were included. Linear regression analysis was used to analyze for changes in the relationship between BMI, leptin, TNFα and adiponectin. Nonlinear regression was used to determine the odds ratio and confidence intervals. Results: Serum TNFα and leptin levels were significantly increased in subjects with an increased BMI of 45-72 (9.9pg/ml ± 0.56 and 7.7pg/ml ± 0.6 respectively; p<0.05), compared to subjects with a BMI of 20-32. This was paralleled by increased levels of leptin, TNFα and IL-6. IL-6 was elevated in subjects with a BMI of 45-72 (4.83pg/ml ± 0.40; p<0.02). IL-6 was increased to a greater extent than leptin. In contrast, adiponectin levels were decreased (p<0.05) in subjects with a BMI of > 45-72 (6.63ng/ml ± 0.5; p<0.05), compared to subjects with a BMI of 20-32 (14.43ng/ml ± 0.32). Conclusion: Our study demonstrates for the first time the unique inflammatory biomarkers profile in morbidly obese females, even before diagnosis of coronary disease, highlighting the possible pathogenic potentials and opens the door for potential use of these biomarkers as a prognostic tool and a therapeutic target that can ameliorate obesity induced cardiovascular dysfunction.

ABSTRACT Background: Obesity is an epidemic and chronic disease that can bring other comorbidities to the patient. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is present in up to 90% of these patients and can progress to hepatitis and hepatocarcinoma. The relationship of this liver disease and obesity is already well known; however, it is possible that some parameters of the comorbidities are more related than others in the pathophysiology of the disease. Aim: Was analyzed the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the comorbidities of metabolic syndrome in morbidly obese patients. Methods: Was involved ultrasonography and laboratory assessment of obese patients before bariatric surgery. NAFLD was assessed using the same sonography parameters for all patients. Based on the results, the patients were divided into groups with and without NAFLD. Comparisons between them involved clinical and laboratory variables such as fasting blood glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR (homeostasis model assessment - insulin resistance), glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol and fractions, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transferase, C-reactive protein, albumin and ferritin. Patients who reported alcohol abuse (defined as the consumption of >14 drinks per week) or who had hepatitis were excluded. Results: Eighty-two patients (74 women and 8 men) were studied, of whom 53 (64.6%) had NAFLD and 29 (35.4%) did not. The levels of glycated hemoglobin (p=0.05) and LDL cholesterol (p=0.01) were significantly altered in patients with NAFLD. However, weight, body mass index and excess weight did not differ significantly between the groups (p=0.835, p=0.488 and p=0.727, respectively). Conclusions: Altered LDL cholesterol and glycated hemoglobin levels were related to the presence of NAFLD.

Combining the advantages of rheological behavior of magnetorheological fluid (MRF) and flexibility adjustability of rubber gasbag, a magnetorheological flexible gasbag polishing technique applied to free-form mould is proposed. With the development of robotic gasbag polishing technique, the flexibility of rubber gasbag can be adjusted by three methods of changing its internal pressure controlled through a pressure control unit, its own material property and structural parameter, and the rheological behavior of MRF inside of it in response to the application of an alterable magnetic field. Effect of rheological behavior to the flexibility of rubber gasbag and surface quality of mould is the single most important focus in this paper. The magnetorheological flexible gasbag polishing system is established and rheological behavior of MRF with magnetic field is described. Through polishing experiment focusing on the relationship between the surface roughness and current around electromagnetic coil, it can be obtained that magnetorheological flexible gasbag polishing technique is effective to improve surface quality when increasing current around coil in certain extent.
