This paper presents the development of a testing method for adhesive joints under Mode 1 fracture. The proposed testpiece consists of two slender beans with a ‘blister’ at the centre of each, which are bonded together and loaded in compression. The effect of buckling and the stability of crack propagation is analysed and found to be in satisfactory agreement with experimental observations. Equations for the evaluation of the fracture toughness based on the energy criteria are derived for the proposed test configuration. The results obtained using the method are checked with those from the DCB specimen and found to be satisfactory.

ABSTRACTCertain coarse-grained Mg-PSZ's exhibit marked R-curve behavior, e.g., the crack resistance increases from ∼5 to ∼15 MPam1/2 with the first 500 microns of crack extension. These high toughness materials also show unusually-good flaw tolerance.Crack propagation and crack path development in Mg-PSZ were investigated during stable crack growth using a modified DCB specimen geometry. Crack extension was monitored with a traveling microscope equipped with a video recording system. PSZ's with various heat-treatments were tested to determine the effect of microstructure on R-curve behavior.Cracks were found to propagate discontinuously and to arrest. Smaller microcracks would develop around the arrested crack, and link together to form the macrocrack which led to eventual failure.

Fracture mechanics is an engineering discipline, which originated from Griffith energy-balance concept. The energy method is the most powerful analytical tool for fracture mechanics. Starting from energy principle in crack propagation, quasi-static governing equations and energy release rate of DCB specimen can be derived by energy principle in this paper. Finally, some correlative problems are discussed.

Microwave cutting glass and ceramics based on thermal controlled fracture method has gained much attention recently for its advantages in lower energy-consumption and higher efficiency than conventional processing method. However, the irregular crack-propagation is problematic in this procedure, which hinders the industrial application of this advanced technology. In this study, the irregular crack-propagation is summarized as the unstable propagation in the initial stage, the deviated propagation in the middle stage, and the non-penetrating propagation in the end segment based on experimental work. Method for predicting the unstable propagation in the initial stage has been developed by combining analytical models with thermal-fracture simulation. Experimental results show good agreement with the prediction results, and the relative deviation between them can be <5% in cutting of some ceramics. The mechanism of deviated propagation and the non-penetrating propagation have been revealed by simulation and theoretical analysis. Since this study provides effective methods to predict unstable crack-propagation in the initial stage and understand the irregular propagation mechanism in the whole crack-propagation stage in microwave cutting ceramics, it is of great significance to the industrial application of thermal controlled fracture method for cutting ceramic materials using microwave.
