Study on the water quality of Sentani Lake has been carried out during October–November 2012 at 3 stations of observation. Observation and retrieval of macrobenthos have been done by using combination between line transect method and square plot. While for physical and chemical characteristics of water is measured in site and at laboratory. Index of variance Shannon-Wiener, Evenness and Density as well as Pollution Index were used to analyse the physical and chemical characteristics of water. Result of this study showed that Telaga Maya area (station 3) has the highest variation of macrobenthos with H’ value= 2.12 while the lowest variation (H’= 1.66) was found around Ekspo River (station 2). Based on population density of macrobenthos, Pilsbryoconcha exilis which collected in the area of Jembatan Dua River (station 1) was found as the highest population with density 9.26 ind/m2, while the lowest population density was Melanoides tuberculata with density 0.93 ind/m2. It can be concluded that based on the value of variance index and Pollution Index, the water quality of Sentani Lake belong to low-medium polluted category.Key words: water quality, macrobenthos, sentani lake and Jayapura.

Water quality indices (WQIs), which translate numerical values of several water quality characteristics of a sample into a single value, play a very important role in the monitoring, comparison and control of water quality. The WQIs of modern and post-modern times have been almost exclusively based on physical and chemical characteristics, and have seldom included ‘biological’ characteristics other than biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and faecal coliforms. During the last three decades of the 20th century, indices based on bioassessment have been increasingly used in some developed countries, besides South Africa and Serbia, to complement the conventional WQIs, but the rest of the world continues to base its WQIs predominantly on physical and chemical characteristics. The serious drawbacks of this approach have been elucidated in this paper and, against that background, the state-of-the-art of biotic indices has been summarized. The paper makes a strong case for greater reliance on bioassessment-based WQIs, especially by developing countries, to strengthen the diagnostic value of the conventional WQIs.

Yerba mate is a Brazilian native species; its importance is due to cultural, environment, and economic factors. Species seedlings production needs to be improved, evaluating alternative substrates and containers. Therefore, we evaluated growth and quality of yerba mate seedlings produced on organic waste-based substrates in biodegradable and non-biodegradable containers. Commercial substrates based on pine bark (CS) and components based on sewage sludge (SS) and coal residue (granulometry from 1 to 3 mm - CR) were used. For each container, were prepared treatments with different substrate components: 75CS/25CR, 50CS/50CR, 25CS/75CR, 75CS/25SS, 50CS/50SS, 25CS/75SS, and CS. Substrates were submitted to physical and chemical analysis. The containers used were 110 cm³ polypropylene tubes, 500 cm³ polyethylene plastic bags, 460 cm³ paperpot®, and 460 cm³ TNT (non-woven fabric). Total height, stem diameter, shoot, and root dry biomass at the end of the seedlings production period were measured and total dry mass, Dickson quality index and height/diameter ratio were calculated. All containers used with commercial substrate provided satisfactory seedlings growth. The substrates showed distinct physical and chemical characteristics due to the addition of sewage sludge and coal residue, which resulted in higher pH and lower seedlings growth. Physical and chemical characteristics of substrates influenced growth and quality of yerba mate seedlings and the alternative substrates used in this study are not suitable to produce seedlings of the species on these conditions. The containers did not influence the variables used in this study.

The guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a fruit plant that is widely distributed in Brazil. In the state of Mato Grosso, the culture adapted well in an irrigated system, however, there are still few studies related to the quality of the fruits produced in the state. In this way the objective of this work was to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of guava fruits cultivated in the region of Tangará da Serra - MT and establish the correlation between these characteristics. A randomized complete block design with three cultivars (Rica, Ogawa and Paluma) was used, four replications with six plants, where the following characteristics were evaluated: fresh mass, length, diameter, length / diameter ratio, pulp percentage, Total soluble solids, titratable total acidity, pH and ratio. The fruits of the cultivars Paluma, Rica and Ogawa cultivated in Tangará da Serra-MT have quality both for the in natura market and for the industry, in addition, a correlation of the physical and chemical characteristics of the guava fruits was observed, allowing the use Of simpler feature evaluations to aid the selection process.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the status of water quality in a river by using the Pollution Index method as stated in the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 115/2003 regarding Guidelines for Determining the Status of Water Quality and to determine the effect of quality status on development efforts towards ecotourism. Methodology and Results: The measurement of water quality was carried out at two points, namely T1 (upstream) and T2 (downstream) points. The parameters included BOD, COD, DO, TSS, Temperature, pH, Zn, S, P, No3, and No2. From the test results for class I, II, and III criteria, almost all parameters exceeded the quality standard. The status of the river water quality, according to the Pollution Index, has increased from moderate polluted upstream and heavily polluted to certain parameters downstream. Conclusion, significance and impact study: The quality standards that are met for the river are criteria for class IV. The increase in pollution is indicated by human activity around the river which is characterized by increasing population and land use in agriculture and plantations. The increasing pollution reduces the quality of the river if it is developed into an ecotourism area due to its low water quality status.

The storage process, in some way, has a direct influence on the production and status of the derived final product. It was possible to verify in this case study that the storage system of the company is deficient, needing improvements, especially when entering the raw material for production. Such problems, such as impurities, broken and burned grains, are generated in the warehouse itself, due to lack of prudence and coordination. Findings that contradict the objective of storage that is the conservation of the particularities of the grains and that may detract from the attributes of the end product in terms of taste, physical and chemical characteristics and visual conditions. Among the possible causes of the disturbances are the lack of maintenance of the machines, inefficient aeration and thermometry gauging. As a suggestion, besides the improvements on the mentioned problems, the implantation of management and strategy of inventories, of programs and quality control, development of the producing agents, planning and methods of solution of problems. The decline in the quality of the raw material, corn, can result in chain effect, damaging the final product, thus damaging the financial results of the organization.

Water is the important for everyone for land and regulating the climate. It is one of the most important compounds that profoundly influence life. The quality of water usually described according to its physical and chemical characteristics. The quality of water is studied in the villages of AMARAVATHI, Andhra Pradesh, India. The water samples from ten locations within the area of the Amaravathi region are collected with monthly variations for three month and analysed for their suitability with respect to drinking, irrigation . The results are compared with the respective BIS codes and Indian standards coads analysed using different approaches (a) National Sanitation Foundation Water Quality Index (NSFWQI) (b) Nemerows pollution index method . However, the overall ground water quality is suitable for irrigation purposes, though a few parameters showed high values at few locations.. Parameters that are tested include temperature ,pH, Hardness ,Acidity, Alkalinity ,turbidity ,chlorides ,DO,BOD and based on the quality treatment plant will also be designed. The water quality is ranked as Excellent Good Poor to Very Poor in the study region based on test results.
