Sarang semut plant is one of indigenous medicinal plants of Merauke region, the Papua province. Local people use the bulb of sarang semut plants to cure inflammation, muscle pain and enhancing immunity. However rare research of the plants has been done especially on the antioxidant activity. The objective of this research was to investigate the antioxidant activity of three species of sarang semut plants which were Myrmecodia beccarii, Myrmecodia sp. and Hydnophytum sp. The test was necessary to identify the inhibitory concentration level of plant extract in blocking a free radical (IC50). Parts of plants were extracted with maceration using methanol for 3 x 24 h to produce concentrated methanol.  Plant extracts of three species were then subject to   antioxidant activity test based on free radical blocking of 1,1-Difenil-2-Pikrilhidrazil (DPPH) qualitatively and quantitatively using Ultraviolet-Visible spectrophotometry. The results showed the methanol extract of M. beccarii, Myrmecodia sp. and Hydnophytum sp. were active as antioxidants with IC50 from 8.18 ppm, 21.79 ppm, 25.31 ppm, respectively while Vitamin C as a control has IC50 7.85 ppm. In conclusion, three  plant species of sarangsemut are potential  as natural antioxidant and plant extracts of M. beccarii showed the highest antioxidant activity among others. Key words: Antioxidant, sarang semut plants, Rubiaceae, DPPH.

The objectives of this study was to determine the half maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) from four types of Parkia speciosa peel extracts (ethanol, methanol, n-hexane, and aqueous)  through DPPH free radical inhibition. First Parkia’s peel extract made by drying the Parkia’s peel that has been sorted, then crushed and mashed with a blender. Parkia’s powder then macerated for 3 replication using each type of solvent and then solvent evaporation was carried out using a rotary vacuum evaporator. The evaporated extract produced then tested for antioxidant activity using the IC50 method and phytochemical screening was performed to analyze the potential content of functional compounds. The results showed that all types of solvents dissolve alkaloid compounds (except water extract), flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and phenols. IC50 values produced from the four types of petai bark extract using methanol, ethanol, water, and n-hexane solvents sequentially were 76.92; 111; 136; and 201 ppm. Methanol extract had the lowest IC50 value of 76.92 ppm which resulted that the methanol extract of petai skin had a strong (active) antioxidant strength compared to others.Keywords: Antioxidant, Exctract, Parkia’s peel, IC50

Objective: This study was designed to determine the Total phenol, flavonoid content, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of different solvent extracts of Piper umbellatum.  Methods: Different solvent extracts evaluated with DPPH radical scavenging activity and Reducing power activity.Results: The presence of phenol and flavonoid showed highly in the methanol extracts than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts. All the extracts have various level of antioxidant activity. Methanol solvent extract have good extraction and show significant antioxidant activity. The effect of reducing power of methanol extract revealed good antioxidant activity compare with other tested extracts.Conclusion: On the basis of the above results we concluded that methanol extract of Piper umbellatum whole plant extracts shows significant antioxidant activity than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts.Keywords: Piper umbellatum, Antioxidant, DPPH, FRAP assay, Polar, Non polar solvents

The study of bioactive molecules of natural origin is a focus of current research. Thymus algeriensis and Artemisia herba-alba are two medicinal plants widely used by the Moroccan population in the traditional treatment of several pathologies linked to inflammation. This study aimed to evaluate the single and combined antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the essential oils extracted from these two medicinal plants, and also their potential toxicity. Essential oils were extracted using hydro-distillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by two methods: the scavenging of the free radical DPPH, and the reduction in iron. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by evaluating the edema development induced by carrageenan injecting, while the analgesic power was evaluated according to the number of abdominal contortions induced by the intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid (0.7%). The acute oral toxicity was performed to assess the potential toxicity of the studied EOs, followed by an analysis of the blood biochemical parameters. The results of the two antioxidant tests indicated that our extract mixture exhibits good iron reduction capacity and very interesting DPPH free radical scavenging power, with an IC50 of around 4.38 ± 0.98 μg/mL higher than that of the benchmark antioxidant, BHT. The anti-inflammatory test demonstrated that the mixture administered orally at a dose of 150 mg/kg has a better activity, exceeding that of 1% Diclofenac, with a percentage of maximum inhibition of the edema of 89.99 ± 4.08. The number of cramps in the mice treated with the mixture at a dose of 150 mg/kg is significantly lower (29.80 ± 1.92) than those of the group treated with Tramadol (42.00 ± 2.70), respectively. The toxicity results show no signs of toxicity with an LD50 greater than 150 mg/Kg. These interesting results show that the two plants’ EOs had an important anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant activity, and also a powerful synergistic effect, which encourages further in-depth investigations on their pharmacological proprieties.

<p> </p><p>Red dragon fruit (<em>H. Polyrhizus</em>) is one of the the plants that has a great potential as natural antioxidant. This study tested the activity of radical scavenging of 2-2' diphenyl -1- pikril hidrazil (DPPH) in the methanol extract, as well as in the soluble and insoluble fractions of ethyl acetate of red dragon fruit peel. This research is carried out through various stages, such as: extraction and fractionation to obtain both insoluble fraction and soluble fractions of ethyl acetate. Antioxidant activity test is conducted by the method of thin layer chromatography and spectrophotometry.<strong> </strong>Antioxidant activity test, IC<sub>50 </sub>values of methanol extract, ethyl acetate soluble fraction, and insoluble fraction of ethyl acetate had been obtained consecutively as much as 241.19 µg /mL, 8.34  µg/mL, 46.84 µg/mL. The soluble fraction of ethyl acetate had greater antioxidant activity compared to the methanol extract and the insoluble fractions of ethyl acetate.</p>

Objectives: In sub-Saharan Africa, the therapeutic use of medicinal plants is of arousing interest. Reproductive disorders are a public health problem like everywhere else in the world. The population, especially in rural areas, uses medicinal plants for their beneficial effects. In Africa, the population uses these medicinal plants for their healthcare, including solving problems related to childbirth where there is an increase in the number of women known as “traditional birth attendants.” The effects of its medicinal plants relate to the various reproductive processes in women, from pregnancy to induction of labor, elimination of placental retention, and management of postpartum hemorrhage. To contribute to the enhancement of medicinal plants traditionally used in reproductive healthcare in Togo and to make information on their pharmacological effects available to the population, this work focused on the evaluation utero-relaxing and anti-free radical effects of extracts of Desmodium ramosissimum in the female rats of the Wistar strain. Material and Methods: The effects of hydro-ethanolic extracts of leaves, stem barks, and roots of D.ramosissimum were then tested on shreds Myometer of the female rats mounted in an organ vat and the antioxidant activity of these extracts tested was then determined. Results: The results show that hydro-ethanolic extracts from leaves, stem bark, and roots of D.ramosissimum cause a reduction in the frequency of spontaneous contractions of the uterine muscle. This reduction shows that these extracts have relaxing effects on the contraction of this muscle. The leaves extract showed better antioxidant activity compared to other extracts. Conclusion: This antioxidant activity is probably due to the phenolic constituents and its metabolites would be partly responsible for the pharmacological activities of D.ramosissimum. D.ramosissimum could thus be used to reduce uterine contractions in order to avoid Threats of Premature Labor.

Malay apple (Syzygium malaccense L.) is a plant that can be used for treatment. Antioxidants have the activity to reduce free radical compounds which is one of the causes of the emergence of various diseases in humans. The purpose of this study to determine the comparison of methods of maceration and socletation extraction of antioxidant activity of malay apple leaf. Research stages include sampling, plant determination, making of simplisia, maceration extraction and socletation with 70% ethanol solvent and determine the antioxidant activity by UV-Vis spectrophotometry with DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) as free radical. The parameter is IC50 value that is the concentration of antioxidant compound which can cause 50% loss of DPPH free radical activity. Although both methods show very strong antioxidant activity, it can be concluded that the difference in extraction methods has an effect on the antioxidant activity produced. The results of antioxidant activity test showed that socletation methods gave an average IC50 value of 37.67 ppm, this value is higher than maceration methods with an average IC50 value of 47.80 ppm. Malay apple leaf has the potential as a natural antioxidant, although it has a lower IC50 value than vitamin C which is 9.72 ppm.

Free radical-mediated oxidation is often linked to various degenerative diseases. Biological substrates with lipids as major components are susceptible to oxygen-derived lipid peroxidation due to their composition. Lipid peroxide products act as biomarkers in evaluating the antioxidant potential of various plants and functional foods. The study focused on evaluation of the antioxidant potential of two extracts (methanol and 80% methanol) of four medicinal plants,Andrographis paniculata,Costus speciosus, Canthium parviflorum, andAbrus precatorius, against Fenton reaction-mediated oxidation of three biological lipid substrates; cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and brain homogenate. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances method. Also, the correlation between the polyphenol, flavonoid content, and the antioxidant activity in biological substrates was analyzed. Results indicated highest antioxidant potential by 80% methanol extract ofCanthium parviflorum(97.55%), methanol extract ofAndrographis paniculata(72.15%), and methanol extract ofCanthium parviflorum(49.55%) in cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and brain, respectively. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents of methanol extract ofAndrographis paniculatain cholesterol (r=0.816) and low-density lipoprotein (r=0.948) andCostus speciosusin brain (r=0.977, polyphenols, andr=0.949, flavonoids) correlated well with the antioxidant activity. The findings prove the antioxidant potential of the selected medicinal plants against Fenton reaction in biological lipid substrates.

Morinda citrifolia. L leaf is a plant that has the potential as an antioxidant due to the presence of compounds in the form of flavonoids and other phenolic compounds that can function as natural antioxidants. In connection with this, research was carried out to Morinda citrifolia. L formulate leaf extract in the form of effervescent granules. Morinda citrifolia leaf extract was macerated with ethanol 96% as solvent. Phytochemical screening showsthat the extract contains flavonoids, tannins, saponins and alkaloids. The extract was formulated with various concentrations of F1 (20%), F2 (25%), F3 (4%). Determination of antioxidant activity using the DPPH free radical immersion method. The results showed that the concentration in the granules influenced antioxidant activity with IC50 values of 109.05 ppm, 101.33 ppm and 73.28 ppm, respectively

Antioxidant activity tests of methanol extracts of velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens) and velvet beans (Mucuna pruriens) in coffee preparations have been previously carried out by several researchers. This present study aims to examine the phytochemical and antioxidant activities of methanol extracts of Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations. The methanol extract was tested for the phytochemical and antioxidant activities by applying DPPH (1,1-Dhiphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) method. The results of the phytochemical test showed that the methanol extracts of the Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations contained secondary metabolites of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, and tannins. The outcomes of the antioxidant activity test revealed that the methanol extracts of the Mucuna pruriens and Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations had antioxidant activities, as indicated by the IC50 values of 42.09 ppm and 37.23 ppm. It was also revealed that the antioxidant content of Mucuna pruriens in coffee preparations was stronger than the content in the velvet beans alone.

Has been investigated the antioxidant activity of  sijukkot ( Lactuca indica L.) The antioxidant activity was tested by capturing 2,2’-diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical method and Vitamin C as a standard of comparison, to absorption using UV-Vis  spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 517nm. The data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS for windows, resulting in a value of y = 0.2036x + 30.35 for sijukkot extract and y = 29.625x - 73.664 for vitamin C. It was found the leaves have an antioxidant site with 96,51 ppm through IC50 test 4,17 ppm which used Vitamin C as a control.
