Kiran Desai’s critically acclaimed novel, The Inheritance of Loss, intertwines narratives of the lives of three characters: the judge, haunted by his past, is joined by his granddaughter Sai in his house in north-eastern India, while the son of his cook is working illegally in America. Published in 2006, the novel has mostly been analysed in the light of diaspora studies and praised for its author’s questioning of the effects of globalisation and immigration when leaving home. Yet what is also worth examining is the way in which some of the characters of the novel, including the judge, inhabit their chosen homes as foreigners or, to be more specific, as surrogate Britons in their country of origin, creating a separate community of anglophiles. The “solace of being a foreigner in [their] own country” (29) is but one of their rewards in their attempts at mimicking a British way of life. If the houses of the novel are set in independent India, this article questions the extent to which they could be read as counterparts to the British country house, relating them to values of continuity, tradition and Englishness. While anglophile characters take the British country house as model for their own Indian houses, their nostalgia is for a British home they never knew or owned. Their experiences of immigration can only lead them to create a pastiche of an English country house, which relies on a mythified vision of England. Their acceptance of English values and social hierarchy turns them into foreigners in their own country, seemingly blurring the definitions of “home” and “abroad”. Their reliance on the model of the British country house further points to the ways in which The Inheritance of Loss parodies the genre of the English manor house novel and the way it relies on colonialist norms.

The study aims to describe  about abstinence forbids of Belantik Malay community and to obtain  to  know  meaning  and  value  that  contained  in  the  abstinence  forbids.  The  writer found that there were twenty three abstinence forbids of the Belantik Malay community. By applying qualitative descriptive method, it is obtained that the abstinence forbids observed in Belantik Malay contain in terms of the religion, education, custom, and health. In fact, the  abstinence  forbids  had  a  magic  power  that  used  as  a  guidance  the  way  of  life  of Belantik Malay community. They believe that they will get side effects if they disobey them individually and in their group.AbstrakPenelitian  ini  bertujuan    untuk  mendeskripsikan  ungkapan  pantang  larang  dalam masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik.  Selain  itu,  tulisan  ini  juga  bertujuan  untuk  mengetahui makna  dan  nilai  yang  terkandung  dalam  ungkapan  pantang  larang  tersebut.  Penulis menemukan terdapat  dua  puluh  tiga  ungkapan  pantang  larang  dalam masyarakat Melayu Belantik. Melalui metode  deskriptif  kualitatif  tergambar  bahwa  ungkapan  pantang  larang dalam  masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik mengandung  nilai  agama,  pendidikan,  adat,  dan kesehatan.  Ungkapan  pantang  larang  memiliki  “kekuatan  (gaib/ajaib)”  sebagai  penuntun hidup  dan  pedoman  bagi  masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik.  Masyarakat  Melayu  Belantik percaya bahwa peristiwa tersebut apabila mereka langgar atau abaikan akan berakibat bagi kehidupan pribadi atau bahkan masyarakatnya.

This article deals with the issue of North-Eastern India, its current social and economic problems in the context of long-term demonstrations of the ethnic separatism. The main aim of the research implies systematic analysis and identification of key factors and reasons perpetuating separatism in NER as well as resource search which determines Indian strategy in solving this problem. The first part of the article is devoted to separatism peculiarities in the region which remains withdrawn and underexplored in many respects. Apart from this, the author provides a quite detailed analysis of negative mentality of the certain part of NER population which justifiably reproaches New Delhi for “discrimination” and inability to solve many problems of the region. Then the author paid the detailed attention to these problems of NER modern society (ethnic, demographic, economic, transport, social etc.) as well as measures undertaken by the Indian government for its settlement.

The essay investigates the phenomenon of laziness by first analyzing the opposition between laziness and the good. Both utility and the good make reference to labor. This opposition between labor and laziness is pivotal in Oblomov, Ivan Goncharov’s famous novel written in 1859. It marks a radical transition from a feudal paradigm to a capitalistic one. The two main characters in the novel are Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, a Russian, and Andrey Ivanovich Stolz, a German, who together seem to personify the contradiction between laziness and labor. But the purpose of the essay is to deconstruct that opposition. In this connection, one can cite Kazimir Malevich, who maintained that laziness is the Mother of Perfection and is always unconsciously inherent in the conscious intent to work. Analysis of the Latin concepts of otium and negotium indicates that the laziness/labor opposition may be deconstructed as a dialectic between labor and its opposite. In other words, laziness does not stand in contradiction to labor but is instead its inseparable dialectical other. In the last part of the essay, the article considers the thinking of Anatoly Peregud, a poet who spent almost all his life in a psychiatric hospital. According to Peregud, Lenin derived his pseudonym from the Russian linguistic root “len” (laziness) in order to make laziness central to communism. For his part, Lenin saw Oblomov as an emblem of the main obstacle standing in the way of communism.
