Implementation of the visual data processing algorithms for onboard computing units

According to the short analysis of modern experience of hardware and software for autonomous mobile robots a role of computer vision systems in the structure of those robots is considered. A number of configurations of onboard computers and implementation of algorithms for visual data capturing and processing are described. In original configuration space the «algorithms-hardware» plane is considered. For software designing the realtime vision system framework is used. Experiments with the computing module based on the Intel/Altera Cyclone IV FPGA (implementation of the histogram computation algorithm and the Canny's algorithm), with the computing module based on the Xilinx FPGA (implementation of a sparse and dense optical flow algorithms) are described. Also implementation of algorithm of graph segmentation of grayscale images is considered and analyzed. Results of the first experiments are presented.

Medardo Rosso (1858–1928) is one of the most original and influential figures in the history of modern art, and this book is the first historically substantiated critical account of his life and work. An innovative sculptor, photographer, and draftsman, Rosso was vital in paving the way for the transition from the academic forms of sculpture that persisted in the nineteenth century to the development of new and experimental forms in the twentieth century. His antimonumental, antiheroic work reflected alienation in the modern experience yet showed deep feeling for interactions between self and other. Rosso's art was transnational: he refused allegiance to a single culture or artistic heritage and declared himself both a citizen of the world and a maker of art without national limits. This book develops a narrative that is an alternative to the dominant Franco-centered perspective on the origin of modern sculpture in which Rodin plays the role of lone heroic innovator. Offering an original way to comprehend Rosso, the book negotiates the competing cultural imperatives of nationalism and internationalism that shaped the European art world at the fin de siècle.

The paper is dedicated to describing the word-building system of the Russian language in terms of its vocabulary. Lexical factors are discussed influencing the formation of lexical units’ potential as motivating units of word-building processes and relations and the realization of this potential in language activities. Of most interest for the authors are anthropocentric determinants, most of which are coordinating the lexical system and, through its mediation, the word-building system with the worldview of native speakers of the Russian language. The proposed model of derivational development of vocabulary provides such coordination through studying the deep-seated process of conceptualization of the words that are the potential motivators of neologisms. This study identifies the word frequency as an external manifestation of conceptualization. The frequency data were obtained from Google search system statistical data. Capturing not only usual but also occasional and potential words, this source is an effective tool for studying word-building processes and their results. This study has unveiled the interrelation between the language worldview of native speakers of Russian and their “word-building behavior” in language activities. The worldview has been found, first of all, to be determined by the pragmatic factor, which primarily influences the usage of a word in the speech reflected by its frequency. The frequency ranks lexical units due to their derivational potential and thereby provides a researcher with a reliable instrument for its study.

Hybrid image segmentation within a computer vision hierarchy A generic model of a computer vision system is presented which highlights the critical role of image segmentation. A hybrid segmentation approach, utilising both edge-based and region-based techniques, is proposed for improved quality of segmentation. An image segmentation architecture is outlined and test results are presented and discussed.

Abstract. The paper considers two directions in the use of visual data for information support of purposeful movements of ground vehicles. This is optical odometry and navigation by landmarks in the environment. Optical odometry builds the trajectory of movement of the vehicle based on the determination of displacements based on selective visual data from different fields of view. The choice and indication of landmarks at the described stage of research remains with the operator. The vision system (VS) monitors the specified landmarks and determines the position of the vehicle relative to them. The experiments used such fields of view as monocular forward looking, panoramic (fisheye type) and forward looking stereo system. When combining the data of the visual channel with each other and with the data of other navigation systems, the specificity of visual sensors is taken into account – a significant effect of the reliability and accuracy of the results from the observation conditions. Experimental verification of the VS layout showed the achievability of high accuracy in solving the navigation problem using the visual channel. All the components of the described process of organizing purposeful movements based on the use of the visual channel continue to be improved.

           The present paper attempts to examine the modern poetic discourse of the most outstanding Australian woman-poet Kristen Lang in terms of aesthetics of the potential energy of feminist ecopoetics. Lang plays a key part in constructing an aesthetic affinity with nature and the non-human world. Moreover, she creates an aesthetic area in her ecopoem to attract her reader to be aesthetically involved in her poetic experience. The poet works as an aesthetic defender of both woman and nature by means of what comes to be called as ecofeminism. Consciously or unconsciously, the poet applies such kind of ecocentric philosophy to her poems. The poet discusses a very sensitive and crucial issue of ‘domination of woman’ by man which has a common ground with ‘domination of nature’. Furthermore, Lang deals with her poetic discourse, as a creator and creative thinker, in terms of aesthetic physicality. Her ecopoem is a body of human and non-human experience. The paper, therefore, debates over such significant issue in some selected poems written by that poet pointing out the role of the aesthetic reader in such modern experience.

A rich stream of visual data enters the cameras of a typical artificial vision system (e.g., a robot) and considering the fact that processing this volume of data in real-rime is almost impossible, a clever mechanism is required to reduce the amount of trivial visual data. Visual Attention might be the solution. The idea is to control the information flow and thus to improve vision by focusing the resources merely on some special aspects instead of the whole visual scene. However, does attention only speed-up processing or can the understanding of human visual attention provide additional guidance for robot vision research? In this chapter, first, some basic concepts of the primate visual system and visual attention are introduced. Afterward, a new taxonomy of biologically-inspired models of attention, particularly those that are used in robotics applications (e.g., in object detection and recognition) is given and finally, future research trends in modelling of visual attention and its applications are highlighted.
