The present study was conducted to further explore gender-based differences in the experience of statistics anxiety among graduate students. A sample of 75 graduate students from a mid-sized research university in the southeastern United States were recruited to participate in a survey concerning statistics anxiety. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of covariance and discriminant analysis. Using the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale, students’ statistics anxiety was measured. After accounting for age, the findings revealed a significant gender difference in statistics anxiety. A significant covariate effect of age indicated that older graduate students reported experiencing higher levels of anxiety as compared to their younger peers. Age accounted for 21% of variance in the combined statistics anxiety subscales. Analysis further revealed that males experienced higher levels of anxiety when seeking statistics help from a fellow student or a professor than did females. Implications for the design of statistics courses are discussed.

The study investigated statistics self-efficacy and learning styles as predictors of statistics anxiety among graduate students in University of Port Harcourt. Seven research questions and six null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The participants in the study were 150 (male = 86, female 64) graduate students drawn through stratified random sampling technique. Three valid instrument titled; statistical anxiety rating scale (STARS), current statistics self-efficacy scale (CSSES), and Grasham Reichann student learning style scales(GRSLSC) was used for data collection. The validity of the instrument was determined using multivariate statistical method of factor analysis. The reliability indices of the instrument were estimated using the Cronbach alpha with coefficients values for statistics anxiety rating scale. .916 and sub scales of .884.71, .80, .70, .63, .60. Current statistics self-efficacy r = .623, and .56, 52, 53, 54, 51, 60 coefficients for the Grasha-Riechmann student learning style scales sub scales. Research question 1, was answered using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation, while 2, 3, 4 and 5 was answered using simple and multiple regression. The null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance with ANOVA associated with multiple regression and t – test associated with simple regression was used for providing answers to the null hypothesis. The result revealed that the statistics anxiety level of graduated student was high, Statistics self-efficacy and learning styles both individual and jointly was seen to predict statistics anxiety. It was recommended that psychological and educational intervention be carried out in the context of increasing statistics self-efficacy and reducing statistics anxiety. Based on findings implications were made and suggestions for further studies.

ASHA's focus on evidence-based practice (EBP) includes the family/stakeholder perspective as an important tenet in clinical decision making. The common factors model for treatment effectiveness postulates that clinician-client alliance positively impacts therapeutic outcomes and may be the most important factor for success. One strategy to improve alliance between a client and clinician is the use of outcome questionnaires. In the current study, eight parents of toddlers who attended therapy sessions at a university clinic responded to a session outcome questionnaire that included both rating scale and descriptive questions. Six graduate students completed a survey that included a question about the utility of the questionnaire. Results indicated that the descriptive questions added value and information compared to using only the rating scale. The students were varied in their responses regarding the effectiveness of the questionnaire to increase their comfort with parents. Information gathered from the questionnaire allowed for specific feedback to graduate students to change behaviors and created opportunities for general discussions regarding effective therapy techniques. In addition, the responses generated conversations between the client and clinician focused on clients' concerns. Involving the stakeholder in identifying both effective and ineffective aspects of therapy has advantages for clinical practice and education.

E-journal, printed journal, and database usage data from campus polls conducted annually, 1998–2000, at one large research university show increased use of e-journals and decreased use of printed journals by faculty and graduate students as the number of available e-journals increased from two hundred to more than three thousand. Little or no statistical correlation between age and frequency of use was found. The majority of frequent users of all three types of resources were from departments in the sciences. Transcripts from the 1998 poll provided insights into attitudes toward replacing printed journals with e-journals. The advantages and disadvantages mentioned were consistent with previous studies.

Inattention is one of the significant problems that inhibit learning among children with intellectual disabilities. However, several strategies and therapies have been developed to solve the problem. This study, therefore, investigates the effectiveness of music therapy in enhancing attention among children with intellectual disability. A pretest-posttest control experimental research design was adopted. The experiment was carried out for six weeks using Music Therapy Treatment Package on 24 children with intellectual disability that were randomly selected Modupe Cole Momerial Childcare and Treatment Home/School, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos. A validated Attention Observation Rating Scale (AORS) with a reliability coefficient of 0.88 was used for this study. Three hypotheses were tested in the study, and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used for data analysis. This study revealed that music therapy is effective in enhancing attention among children with intellectual disabilities. Sex and level of severity of the disability were also tested as moderator variables, but they have no significant main or interaction effect with music therapy in enhancing attention for children with intellectual disability. The finding is that music therapy is significantly effective in enhancing attention for children with intellectual disability regardless of their sex or level of severity. It was concluded that attention deficit could be improved for children with intellectual disability. Therefore, Music therapy was recommended for use in the school with adequate teacher training.

AbstractThis study aims to measure the latent mean difference in perfectionism and marital satisfaction by counseling help-seeking attitudes. The respondents were 327 married graduate students from a research university in Malaysia. An online self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. The respondents completed the Almost Perfect Scale- Revised, Dyadic Almost Perfect Scale, Marital Satisfaction Scale, and Attitudes toward Seeking Professional Psychology Help Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examined the instruments and the results indicated that construct validity were achieved. The latent mean difference in perfectionism and marital satisfaction by counseling help-seeking attitudes were tested using multigroup invariance analysis. The respondents with negative attitudes toward counseling help-seeking (n = 159) reported a higher latent mean in perfectionism but a lower latent mean in marital satisfaction compared to those with positive attitudes toward counseling help-seeking (n = 168). The implications of these findings for counseling services are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to adapt the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale (STARS) for a Greek student population. The STARS was administered to 890 Tertiary Education students in two Greek universities. It was performed a cross-validation study to examine the factorial structure and the psychometric properties with a series of confirmatory factor analyses. Results revealed a correlated six first-order factor model which provided the best fit to the data compared to a six-factor model with one superordinate factor. All six factors of the Greek version of the STARS presented convergent and discriminant validity and were internally consistent. Implications and limitations are discussed.

The changing demographics of higher education have led to an increase in the number and type of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). As research universities continue to see a rise in the enrollment of Latino/a students, a better understanding of the implications of this change within the existing institutional context will be essential to best serve this growing community of students. We position our study within a tradition of organizational culture theory that points to the importance of organizational actors’ interpretations, perspectives, and actions in order to understand an organization’s general behavior and change. By acknowledging the importance of graduate students within research universities, we focus on their perspectives at an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Research Institution (HSRI) and ask, “What are the organizational culture implications of an HSI designation for a research university?” Our analysis revealed four important themes: communicating institutional pride as an HSRI, engaging the benefits of an HSRI, operationalizing a serving mission, and involving graduate students as institutional actors at HSRIs. Institutional recommendations that follow from our findings include providing clear communication regarding HSI status, objectives, and commitment; assessing the campus climate; and increasing graduate student involvement as key leaders within HSRIs.

Background: Although excessive use of social networking site (SNS) is related to undesired effects on healthy individual’s psychological well-being, there is a huge gap in studies performed with individuals who suffer from various mental disorders. Aim: The main goal of this study is to examine the association between problematic utilization of SNSs and depressive symptoms across patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods: 111 patients diagnosed with MDD (diagnoses confirmed via the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5–Clinician Version (SCID-5/CV)) and 108 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited for the study. Montgomery–Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) were administered by both MDD and HC groups. Group comparisons were estimated with multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) analyses. To identify the relationship between SNS addiction and depressive symptoms, the Pearson correlations were performed, and finally, we computed the multiple linear regression analyses to determine whether SNS addiction predicts depressive symptoms. Results: The results revealed that MDD group is more addicted to SNS relative to HC. In addition, depressive symptoms were significantly predicted by ‘relapse’ subdimension and the overall score of SNS addiction in the MDD group. Conclusion: Our study illustrated the detrimental effects of excessive SNSs usage on depressive symptoms in MDD particularly for the individuals in ‘relapse’ state of SNS addiction. The mental health workers should consider the usage patterns of SNSs in patients diagnosed with MDD during their clinical observation and management.

Abstract Background There is considerable evidence supporting the association between extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) and psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). However, it is not well understood whether such an association exists in individuals without SCZ and how the association differs from those with SCZ. Our aim was to examine the associations of EPS with psychotic symptoms and compare them between SCZ and non-SCZ individuals. Methods We used data from a 10-year community-based study of homeless or precariously housed persons from Vancouver, Canada. Diagnosis of SCZ was made according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR). Severity of psychotic symptoms was rated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Severity of parkinsonism, dyskinesia, and dystonia was rated using the Extrapyramidal Symptom Rating Scale (ESRS), and akathisia using the Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale (BARS). Presence of EPS was defined as having at least moderate severity on the ESRS (i.e., ≥4 out of 8) or BARS (i.e., ≥3 out of 5) Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) scale. Absence of EPS was defined as scoring ≤2 on the ESRS or ≤1 on the BARS CGI-S scale. Two-way analysis of covariance was performed using SCZ and EPS as independent variables and PANSS five factors (i.e., positive symptoms, negative symptoms, disorganization, excitement, and depression) as dependent variables, controlling for age, antipsychotic users, and cocaine- or methamphetamine-dependent individuals. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed for both SCZ and non-SCZ groups, controlling for the same confounding variables, to examine 1) associations of the severity of EPS subtypes with PANSS factors and 2) whether the presence of multiple EPS subtypes would be associated with increased SCZ symptoms relative to the presence of a single subtype. Results A total of 223 participants were included in this study (mean age: 44.1 ± 12.0 years; 76.1% male). Eighty-four participants met the diagnosis of SCZ, of whom 39 met our criteria for having EPS and 32 for not having EPS. The remaining 139 participants were not diagnosed with SCZ, of whom 50 had EPS and 72 did not. None of the participants had clinically significant dystonia. Overall, significant main effects of EPS were found for total symptoms (F1,182 = 24.4, p < 0.001), negative symptoms (F1,182 = 16.3, p < 0.001), disorganization (F1,181 = 16.6, p < 0.001), and excitement (F1,182 = 15.8, p < 0.001), but not positive symptoms or depression. The presence of EPS was associated with greater total symptoms and disorganization in both SCZ and non-SCZ groups. Significant interaction effects between SCZ and EPS were found for negative symptoms (F1,182 = 6.0, p = 0.015) and excitement (F1,182 = 3.9, p = 0.050), where the presence of EPS was associated with greater negative symptoms and excitement in SCZ participants, but not in non-SCZ participants. Consistent in both SCZ and non-SCZ groups, there were significant positive associations of the severity of 1) parkinsonism with negative symptoms, 2) dyskinesia with disorganization and total symptoms, and 3) akathisia with excitement. The presence of multiple EPS subtypes, relative to a single subtype, was not associated with significant increases in any SCZ symptoms, except a significant increase in excitement in non-SCZ participants. Discussion The presence of EPS is clearly associated with greater symptoms of SCZ, even in individuals without SCZ. People with SCZ may experience greater negative symptoms and excitement as a result of EPS than those without SCZ. Subtypes of EPS are distinctively associated with factors of SCZ symptoms. Future studies should elucidate the mechanisms underlying these associations.
