Introduction: Sonographic carotid intima media thickness measurement in diabetic patients is an important tool for estimating the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. It is a simple, noninvasive and widely available tool which can give idea of further treatment needed. The objective of this study was to determine the mean intima media complex thickness in patients with type II diabetes mellitus attending a tertiary care center. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study done in 64 patients with the type II diabetes mellitus patients visiting diabetic clinic of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, sent for carotid Doppler examination in the department of radiology and imaging. Ethical approval was taken from the Instituitonal Review Board. Convenient sampling method was used. Carotid intima media thickness was measured on both sides and mean intima media thickness was calculated. Mean intima media thickness for male and female diabetic patients was also calculated separately. Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25 was used for data analysis. Results: The mean carotid intima media thickness was 0.86±0.13mm with range from 0.7mm to 1.3mm. Mean intima media thickness in male was 0.832±0.094mm and in female it was 0.904±0.144mm. Among 64 patients, 30 (46.8%) were female and 34 (53.3%) were male. Age of the patients ranged from 35 years to 68 years with mean age of 52.4±6.54 years. Conclusions: Carotid intima media thickness in patients with type II diabetes mellitus showed higher values than that of mean value from study done in similar study. Female had higher mean intima media thickness than male.

ABSTRACT Background The present study was carried out to study various atherosclerotic risk factors in prediabetes and type II diabetes mellitus (DM) patients, with special reference to carotid artery intima–media thickness (CIMT). The mean value of CIMT as an indicator of early atherosclerosis was determined and the various atherosclerotic risk factors in patients with prediabetes and type II DM were studied. Materials and methods A Comparative two group study was conducted involving 50 patients each with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the age group of 30 to 65 years, Confirmed by FPG/2hour PG/HbA1C/Random plasma glucose values according to ADA criteria, over a period of one year. The study consisted of interview regarding demographic profiles, vascular risk factors, fundoscopy and investigation like FPG, 2hour PG with OGTT, HbA1C, lipid profile, Renal function tests, urine for microalbuminuria, ECG, 2DECHO and CIMT Measurement using B mode ultrasonography. Results The association between age of the patients and occurrence of type II DM and prediabetes was found to be statistically significant. Mean duration of type II DM in our study was 6.64 ± 6.71 years. 66% Diabetics and 62% Pre-Diabetics had a BMI over 23. Mean TGs levels in diabetics and Pre-diabetics where 268 mg/dl and 193mg/dl respectively. Mean CIMT in Diabetics and Pre-diabetics were 0.81mm and 0.67mm respectively. Incidence of hypertension in diabetics and Pre-diabetics were 30% and 26% respectively. CIMT had a positive association with hypertension, smoking, and a moderate significance with alcohol use. Conclusion The present study emphasizes on the role of CIMT measurement as a routine investigation among diabetics and pre-diabetics for early recognition of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk reduction. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that is mainly associated with a number of lifestyle behaviors. There is a high discrepancy among urban and rural populations with the prevalence of diabetes in rural areas as 2.5% and a high prevalence of 14.6% in urban areas. Type 2 diabetes mellitus accounts for the majority of all diabetes cases with a number of chronic effects that include cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, blindness, and disability. This study is done to determine the prevalence of Type II Diabetes Mellitus among the adult population in the medical department of a tertiary care center. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done in a medical department of a tertiary care center of Himal Hospital Private Limited from March to April 2020. Ethical approval was taken from the Ethical Review Board of NHRC (Reference Number 752). All the data of the last two years from the medical record section were included in the study. The convenience sampling technique was followed. Descriptive statistical analysis was done. Results: The study showed the prevalence of Type II Diabetes Mellitus among the adult population to be 23.93 % (0.23) (C.I= 0.20-0.26). Prevalence was found to be ... Background and aim: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with the development of premature arteriosclerosis and a higher cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Diabetic dyslipidaemia is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of accelerated atherosclerosis in this condition. B-mode ultrasound enables non-invasive, direct visualization of the arterial wall. The aim of this study was to correlate intima media thickness of the carotid artery (CIMT) quantification as a reliable marker of atherosclerotic burden in diabetes patients.Method: It was a Cross Sectional Study done on 50 patients in the age group of 30-70 years with type II Diabetes Mellitus of more than 5 years duration without hypertension. Carotid Intima Media Thickness (CIMT) was measured using an echotomographic system with a 7.5-MHz linear transducer probe. With the carotid bulb and the longitudinal projection of the common carotid artery 2cmx from carotid bulb, the site of the greatest thickness including a plaque lesion was sought along both near and far walls bilaterally.Results: The mean CIMT of subjects with fasting triglyceride level less than 150 mg/ dL was 13.2±0.48 mm with a range of 0.6-2.4 mm. Similarly the level between 150- 200 mg/dL was 1.89±0.54 mm with a range of 1.3-2.6 mm and level more than 200 mg/dL was 2.00±0.63 mm with a range of 0.8-2.6 mm. From the present study, it is clearly evident that age, duration of disease, fasting triglycerides and postprandial triglycerides have a significant impact on the CIMT, whereas other variables are having any significant impact on CIMT.Conclusion: The present study concludes both fasting and postprandial triglyceride levels correlate significantly with carotid intima media thickness. But, the correlation of postprandial triglyceride levels with carotid intima media thickness is better than that of fasting triglyceride levels with carotid intima media thickness, the postprandial hypertriglyceridemia despite normal fasting triglyceride level can be considered as an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Introduction: Dyslipidemia is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease in diabetes mellitus. Early detection and treatment of dyslipidemia in type-2 diabetes mellitus can prevent risk for atherogenic cardiovascular disorder. Objective: To determine the frequency of dyslipidemia in patients with type II diabetes mellitus presenting in a tertiary care hospital for routine check-up Materials and Methods Study design: Cross sectional study Setting: Department of Medicine (South Medical Ward), Mayo Hospital, Lahore Duration: Six months i.e. 1st July 2020 to 31st December 2020. Data collection procedure: Total 220 patients fulfilling selection criteria were enrolled in the study. Then blood samples were obtained and sent to the pathology laboratory of the hospital for assessment of lipid profile. Reports were assessed and level of cholesterol and triglycerides were noted and dyslipidemia was labeled, if levels were high. All this data was recorded in proforma. Results: In this study, the mean age of patients in this study was 52.71 ± 7.46 years. There were 104 (47.3%) males and 116 (52.7%) females. There were 92 (41.8%) patients of normal BMI, 72 (32.7%) patients were overweight and 56 (25.5%) patients were obese. The mean duration of diabetes was 18.30 ± 3.92 months. Dyslipidemia was diagnosed in 97 (44.09%) patients. Conclusion: Results of this study showed high frequency of dyslipidemia among diabetic patients. Objectives: To assess Carotid artery intima-media thickness in patients with type II diabetes mellitus. Study design and setting: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Department of Medicine, CMH Quetta from June 2018 to May 2019. Methodology: Total 176 known type II diabetes mellitus (DM) patients were included in study. Age ranged from 30-70 years. Patients using statin drugs, chronic kidney disease and decompensated liver cirrhosis were excluded. Carotid artery ultrasonography was carried out by radiologist. Carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) was achieved with a 7 MHz B-mode ultrasound system. The intima-media thickness (IMT) was demarcated as the distance between the leading edge of the luminal echo to the leading edge of the adventitia of the media. This distance was measured during the diastolic phase. This was measured 3 cm before the carotid bifurcation. Also, carotid bifurcation and internal carotid artery 2 cm distally from the carotid bifurcation was scanned. Results: Mean age was 47.86 ± 6.46 years. Most of the patients 125 (71.02%) were consisted of 30 to 50 years of age. Among them the 176 patients, 92 (52.27%) were male and 84 (47.73%) were females. Male to female ratio comprised of 1.1:1. Results further revealed that 43(24.43%) patients showed asymptomatic Carotid artery intima-media thickness. Rest there was no asymptomatic Carotid artery intima-media thickness in 133 (75.57%) patients. Conclusion: This study determined that the frequency of asymptomatic Carotid artery intima-media thickness in patients with type II diabetes mellitus is quite high.
